Wow, if that's the case, not impressed at all. The sigma is probably not much worse

Has anyone tried the lens for starry skies?
Some have claimed that coma is practically absent wide open but in this video @ 8:50 performance seems just ok and not that different from say the 1635 GM

That is a very nice set of shots from Tuscany. I showed them to my wife and she really enjoyed them too. We met in the Navy and were stationed for two years in Naples, Italy. We loved traveling all over Italy and the surrounding countries. No question that the 24-105 is a very nice and versatile lens for travel or landscape photography. I have a very good copy of this lens and will often use it as a one lens kit. I would not hesitate to use this lens for any of my photography. However, I do like changing it up a bit with primes of various focal lengths. Some manual focus and some auto focus. I find the rendering of the primes more appealing at times and I do like to print large so the additional resolution and crisper corners do come in handy occasionally. But I have some very nice prints that were made using the 24-105 as well. ...Show more →
Thanks for looking and for your kind comments. Tuscany was an experience of a lifetime. I hope that my wife and I will have the opportunity to return someday, because two weeks wasn't enough to even "scratch the surface" of all there is to see.
Well...the one I ordered 6 days ago just shipped. Was told they had plenty of stock before ordering then informed this morning there was no stock and it was delayed, so imagine my surprise when I checked the status and saw it had actually shipped with tracking!
For anyone looking for an excuse to order it...just think to yourself "Dude I'm getting a 24mm GM!"*
*note: you will need to price match it unless you feel like paying their inflated retail price.

I did, but all I have right now is the compressed version that I posted here. I'll drop by home at lunch and grab a copy of the original raw and post a crop.

Everywhere I see on Google shopping says backordered
The site won't appear on google shopping, but I did manage to uncover it after several pages of normal google search results. The price match however will need to be done with a site that doesn't show it as sold out or pre-order. Amazon worked for me, but YMMV.

I figured it out, but tax to my state kills it, I'll wait for Adorama to restock I guess
Yea, I think they tax all states that have sales tax unfortunately. Wasn't good for me either, but I needed it before a trip in April and didn't want to risk it.

I chatted with them and they said "Amazon says ships in 7 to 9 weeks" so we won't price match with them. Go figure.
I think I got lucky, but I'm sure it'd work if you keep playing chat roulette to get a friendly agent who would just submit the price match. Same thing happens for in store deals too. But like you said, this is really only for folks who couldn't or don't feel like waiting as the tax kills it for most folks.

Here's a 100% crop of the astro shot I took last November. This is the far upper left corner of the image, taken at 20 seconds, ISO100 and wide open on a tripod. I'm pretty new to astro photography, so I'll let sharper eyes than mine judge the results.
Looks decent, but might have slight coma. You're definitely getting streaking from the exposure length, on a high MP body, the "Rule of 500" realistically needs to be cut in half. I'd shoot 8-10 seconds with this lens

If this is a 1:1 crop showing the corners, it looks pretty good to my eyes.
