There is one in stock ad Adorama this very moment. I came soooooo close to clicking the "buy now" button but got cold feet. I'm not a pro and my wife would probably leave me if I bought it.
Most of us are in the same boat. The key, I have learned, is that the day before your large box arrives, make sure a small box — preferably in “Tiffany blue” — arrives for your wife 😁.

This Item is on the way to our warehouse and is expected in a few days."
Just before I posted it was listed as being "in stock", I had it in my cart, credit card data entered, and was one click away from a $12,000 debit on my account. Delivery date within 3 days. Someone must have grabbed it.
Bittersweet moment. I guess my marriage will last for at least for a few more months. : )

Here in Germany you could argue: The new Canon 400/2.8iii is 1000 Euros more!
Not really. As I recall, the Leica R 800mm f5.6 Modular Apo-Telyt lens was around $15,000 in 1988. I had the pleasure of Leica Camera USA loaning this lens to me for a month in February of 1998. Before that was the Leica R 800mm f6.3 which as I recall in the mid 70's to early 80's was around $29,000.
Then there was this monster from Leica, the 1600mm f5.6 lens (only 1 was made available and I believe parts for a second for repair) with a reported price of $2,000,0000. There are other very expensive lenses as well.

12K is the main course. $1K for two telextenders and $500 or so for a replacement foot, soft case, etc. Etc. is dessert.
Nice meal.
I'm thinking one way to psychologically back into this purchase would be to buy the TCs first (I've got the 100-400 zoom already so I could justify them on that basis) and then use them as an excuse to buy the big lens, where they would really sing.

Lucky for me I already own both TCs and I already have a couple Canon feet (that according to Alex fit) so I'd mostly be needing a LensCoat and maybe a better front cap
Man those images tell a story. That poor fish didn't know what was coming. Ripped out of the water in a split second. And the bird was just showing off - "I don't even need to pay attention - I'm looking elsewhere and I can grab this thing".
