"We've just completed our full review of the Zeiss ZX1. With a 37MP full-frame sensor, minimalist controls and Lightroom Mobile built in, it remains a refreshing – if quirky – take on the smartphone-meets-camera concept."

Still wish Sony would just update the Rxrii. It's not like they would have to dump alot into it. Just put in the latest AF, menu, buffer, better EVF/LCD, and processer. Done I can live with the battery with that camera.

I am willing to bet Sony doesn't want to have to license the Zeiss badge any more. And while that lens is amazing, I would love to see a refresh with a GM lens

An astute observation. In terms of both lens design and release schedule Sony eclipsed Zeiss quite a while ago, making that blue badge worthless now.

If you mean GM as in 1.4, no thanks. Amazing lens but not what I'd want in the RX1iii. A GM quality F2 that can be nice and small, then I'm in

I would say f/2. To be honest, f/1.4 never occurred to me.

Anyone know what happens to the Lightroom after 1 year? I assume the on camera's mobile LR is good forever, but for desktop editing those who still has perpetual LR 6 which doesn't have the profiles for ZX1, you have to end up buying LR CC right? I mostly use C1 nowadays.
I just bought another RX1Rii after selling mine 3 months ago. I miss it dearly. I thought a7c and Sigma 35i can replace it. Though I initially felt the image quality was close, but after a while, the rendering of the Sonnar + the sensor just cannot be matched.

Surely that has got to be a record.
A more thorough humiliation and trashing of the Zeiss brand is impossible to conceive.
I have no respect at all for Zeiss after this fiasco.
Indeed. And all the Zeiss shills and apologists who sang the praises of this monstrosity of a camera for page after page in the thread are now conspicuously silent.

Here's a more nuanced take on where the ZX1 currently stands, from Hugh Brownstone:
Personally, I'm with David on this one: when you consider what else Zeiss could have done with the millions of dollars that were no doubt spent on R & D for the ZX1! Just think of all those gorgeous new lenses that could of been built instead
I'm thankful of what Zeiss has given us in e-mount; before CV hit its stride, it was one of the main reasons I switched to Sony, but I'm left feeling there is so much more that could have been done. I think the loss of Zeiss as a serious consumer lens maker, is a tragedy; Dr Nasse would be turning in his grave if he saw the current state of the once great Zeiss.

It might have something to do with it being announced three years ago. 3 years ago, it was intriguing and almost special. But now it feels a bit dated given the reviews. This is a result of development hell during COVID. Reading too much into it is silly.

Personally if the ZX1 was not a fixed lens camera and the price was a few thousand less, I would have most certainly tried it. At a lower price I would have probably tried the fixed lens ZX1 anyway.
I am almost always in support of those that dare to step outside the box and take a few risks. I am impressed that Zeiss took a concept that many have been talking about for years and turned their idea into a reality. Maybe not the reality many had in mind based upon what appears to be very few sales, but they did something instead of just write about it.
Even if the ZX1 didn’t make it out of the gate so-to-speak, it’s not the first nor the last failed or lack luster product launch in the history of product launches across the photography industry since the very beginning.
So where does Zeiss go from here? Apparently to the Bank as they continue to be a very successful company providing probably many well paying jobs for souls all over the globe and like other photographers, I do hope we see more Zeiss photography lenses in the not too distant future too. Thankfully plenty of Zeiss glass on the shelf for all to enjoy regardless.

Zeiss will be fine. They have a huge medical optics market. I just got done using a Zeiss microscope this morning.

Optical too, they have many labs that produce lenses for glasses including in the US.
More on topic, I can't believe this costs more than a leica Q2. I get that its being advertised as an editing computer and camera but they are nuts to think that pricing above the Q2 would be tolerated by the market. That camera already costs probably more than its worth.

Hmmmm, I think where pricing of the Q2 gets interesting to me is the brand tax. Like, we know its there, but the Q2 is a low volume product that has a very complicated assembly and if nothing else Leica doesn't skimp on materials when it comes to construction.
Think we'd only get a good idea if someone else comes out with a modern competitor. If anything, I think a new rx1r ii is even more overpriced atm due to the Q2 being so much more competent.

Finally, we have a credible culprit for the epic failure that is the ZX1. It was COVID’S fault! Such a relief to have that cleared up.

Ultimately, what Zeiss should've done is an RX1R MK3 with similar lens, slightly larger body size to accommodate a bigger battery, and add a fixed EVF. Pricing around $4000 MSRP with used price floating around mid and low $3000. If editing on the go is such a big deal, just throw in a mobile editing software and allow better raw transfer to your smartphone. Still it won't sell that many copies, but there would be many more who own one on FM.
