Nice shots - any pointers on you AF settings for BIF would be much appreciated! It seems a bit counterintuitive to me.

I'm making headway with (large) BIF - at least compared with my first day out with the camera.
Here are a couple from this afternoon.

I see the exif just says “300mm” - these were shot with the 70-300 AF-P

It’s a work in progress, I was experimenting with Auto area AF as well as wide area AF with quick AF.

I spent another 2 hours this afternoon with Z7 24-70/4 S, 35/1.8S, 58G, 105G, Nikkor 50/1.2 Ais and Leica R 50 Cron IV all excellent. The Z7 is very new and I suspect half the issues is really understanding how to set up the camera and AF modes correctly. I personally feel this would take me about 1 to 2 weeks minimum to become fully accustomed with the settings.

The 24-70/4S and 35/1.8S are truly superb lenses.

So far I love what I see as a camera alongside my D850. Lr and PS latest updates work for importing the raw NEF files but the defaults and settings are very different than what you would expect particularly the sharpening and noise reduction settings.

I suspect until we have detailed Z7 Adobe profile it will be difficult to really gauge just how well the Z7 will perform even regarding the dynamic range.

Some more shots 105E and Z7 and last shot is with the Nikkor 50/1.2 AIs

Thanks Charles!
Great shots and I am really looking forward to the 50/1.8 S - especially in light of your photo of Marisa with the 35.
I bought an 85mm 1.8G that arrived yesterday - a lens that I have owned before but under used - and it promises to be a delight on the Z7. It has always been a good lens but IBIS will be very useful.

It looks like you and the Z7 are hitting focus just fine with those shallow depth of field portraits. Wonderfully rendered backgrounds as well. You obviously understand your lenses well. Very nice sets Charles.

Thank you Patrick The 35/1.8S is looking to be a great lens. We need to have the Z7 profiles for Lr/PS that have been optimised so then we can really see just how well the different lenses perform. The 85/1.8G is an excellent lens considering its size/weight. Probably one of the best value lenses alongside the 50/1.8G.

I have tried another Lr profile - Adobe Color and different sharpening settings.

I have noticed I love the 58G rendering with the Z7. I have not figured it out yet!

Charles, have you tried the 50 1.8g on the Z7? I sold mine at the beginning of the week as I have the 50 1.8 S on order. I had to pack it up the same day I received the Z7.

The 85 1.8g seems to be a nice match with the Z7 - of course I will want the S when it becomes available but the 14-30 is a much higher priority.

I just can't wait to find out more about 85mm and 14-30mm S versions.

Another interesting review in process. Normally Lloyd is normally very critical

http://diglloyd.com/blog/2018/20181007_1500-NikonZ7-in-progress.html

'My review of the Nikon Z7 is underway—I just came down from the mountains to get a cell signal and post a bunch of stuff—see previous posts. My apologies to subscribers who had a delayed response. Not everything with the Nikon Z7 is ideal (I’ll be detailing a few things), but it is as close to perfect as any mirrorless camera I’ve ever used. Kudos to Nikon for releasing a “v1” camera and kicking some serious butt. The Sony A7R III feels crummy compared to the Z7; I know which one I want to use; the thing just works right and fits right and Nikon has preserved the feel of the D850 within the limits of the new body size. An 'A' to Nikon, would be 'A+' if, alas, the Z7 had not omitted Eye AF."

I personally feel the A7rIII is also excellent choice but it depends on which system you aligned yourself with

Z7 with the 24-70 kit lens. How *good* is this lens considering it's price as part of the kit! These are just some snaps of things I tend to trial a camera and lens on. The RAW files were converted to DNG and then processed through Capture One Pro. Boy you've got to work hard to get anything out of those DNG files and I'm still not happy with the outcome. Can't wait till Capture One Pro releases their Z7 profile!

Z7 + 24-70 f4s, 1/8s f/7.1 at 70.0mm iso900. Handheld at 1/8sec!

They look great Lance. Have you done any comparisons alongside the 24-70E VR?

Cheers

Thanks very much, Charles. Yeah, that 24-70 is an amazing lens, dare I say brilliant considering the price. Sharp, from edge to edge and has such "depth" and "openness"
