Some folks here certainly know how to make the z7 produce beautiful images. You are making this very difficult for me :-). I am missing photography and have not had a FF in a few years. I have a lot of experience with Nikon/Canon DSLR, and have always preferred the Nikon body, followed closely by Canon, then Olympus,Fuji, and dead last for user experience the Sony a7xx line. Having said that, there are some great deals on the a7rIII right now and my mind tells me that output from the z7 and a7rIII should be VERY close.
The reason I post is that the images being posted here seem different in some way....in a better way. When I consider that I love what I see here and that I love shooting Nikon bodies I am thinking I need to ignore the great Sony deals I am seeing and suck it up and grab a z7.
One question ...do the photographers here feel they could produce identical output with the Sony a7rIII? Why did you go with the z7 instead? Is it output, the user experience, build quality, the menus, the lenses you have?
And please know this is not a brand thing. I have owned them ALL and don't care what name is on the outside.
I am just curious as to what attributes of the picture taking process led you to the new kid on the block vs a later generation Sony? I do know I am talking to Nikon fans on a Nikon forum and that is OK. As good as some of you are I am very sure that if you felt you could take better shots with an iPhone that is what you would be using.

I'm very disappointed.....that you didn't look me up when you cam to Sydney.
All jokes aside, I hope you had a great time here in Sydney but if you did look me up, I would have gladly shown you round.
Haha! I will certainly look you up next time! It's such a magnificent city and I barely scratched the surface of it! I've taken some fantastic holidays, but that was easily my favorite so I will definitely be back
I think you're asking a question that really can't be answered because the A7rIII and Z7 sensors are so close it depends on lenses you use, type of photography and personal preferences. I would say image quality should be pretty low on the list when deciding between those two cameras.

Good to know that you enjoyed your stay here so much. This is important feedback for the tourist industry.
If you're into birding, I do know quite a few spots, but it is season dependent. Summer is usually too hot for birds, and me!

I have come from a similar path. I started in Nikon and enjoyed it for years very much....until getting my hands on a Leica M8. Well, that route got expensive fast and that's when the Sony A7x series came along, of which I enjoyed for a few years. The last year or two....my gear has really been sitting around getting no use. If I took a camera anywhere I just went with an A6300 or so and felt disinterested. I enjoyed the images, but I really didn't have that connection that I had with the Leica....or Nikon for that matter. I held out from the A7III and A7RIII releases because it was more of the same. The Z7 announcement then caught my eye a couple of months ago, finally Nikon in mirrorless. I have been following along, especially with adaptability of other manufacturer lenses. The initial results that I have read from Michael and others indicate that the Z7 may be the best at adapting Leica lenses, which is a key point for me. Sony is very poor for Leica.
I purchased my Z7 last week. The feeling in the hand is absolutely perfect. I have not used a camera that feels as good/comfortable in my hands. Slightly larger than the A7 series, but it fits my hands perfectly. The EVF....is excellent. The files straight out of the camera are the best I have ever seen. The Nikon colors....the buttons/layout....lcd at the top....old AI-S/AF-S lens compatibility....I'm back!
I also bought the Nikon 105 1.4 AF-S....the shot below is OUT OF THE CAMERA. I really want to adjust something...at the same time I don't just to say its SOOC!

Congratulations Ryan Great to see you here. I have followed a similar path as you know and I am still to pick up my Z7. My extended testing of the Z7 has been great and love the feel and ergonomics. The 105E is probably one of my all time favorites!.
Great post and photo!
Thanks for the hand holding but what you describe is important to me because as the post before said, I think the sensors are very close. I am coming to the conclusion that IF indeed the a7rIII has a few advantages with focus performance, this difference for me is outweighed by my enjoyment and efficiency with Nikon bodies.
Thank you for your time, photo, and comments!
Greg
Another blog post from Brad Hill about his thoughts comparing the Z7 and D850 and why he would pick the Z7 over the D850 as long as it wasn't his one and only camera in the bag: http://www.naturalart.ca/voice/blog.html#Z7_OR_D850

Greg/Charles, thanks
I have not used the new sensors found on the A7III and A7RIII (which do look fantastic), but the detail this sensor puts out is amazing...look at Lance's photos above for reference. If the A7 series is better than this Z7, it may be by a thin margin, which makes the other intangibles (color, grip, feel, lens compatibility, etc) much more important in my decision making. The sensors are so good nobody looking under 100% magnification will notice a difference all else being equal.
The 35 1.8 S lens is also amazing. It is really blowing my mind
. Yeah, these guys can become quite "tame", mostly the ones that hang around in parks and get used to human interaction. I had one sit on my 80-200 f2.8 Pentax lens, many years ago when I was shooting Pentax DSLRs, and I was holding the camera up to my eye at the time!

I would suggest that Lance sends some of his photos to Tony, to show him if the 24-70mmS is any sharp....
I did read somewhere that the Northrup's did a test on the 24-70 f4s and some other manufacturer's lenses but I have not bothered to look it up as I am a bit over them (Northrup's that is). They seem to be doing much of their work for click bait and their findings with the Z7 just don't gel with mine. If they are saying the 24-70 f4s isn't sharp, then that just goes to prove what I am thinking about them. It just seems to me that they are becoming more and more irrelevant. The 24-70 f4s is crazy sharp and a superb lens especially considering the stupidly low price when offered as a "kit" lens.

Great shots of the cockatoos Lance ! We had number of them that used to sit on our back veranda and tear apart the timber railings! I don't think many outside of Australia realise just how noisy they can be. Apparently the dB levels can reach over 120dB and great for sleeping in on a Sunday morning
Excellent information on the 24-70/4S lens. I really don't understand when pro reviewers get it so wrong. I did respect T&C before but I really wonder which planet they now live on !!!

Wonderful shot Ryan! I have had all the A7 series and I prefer the D810/D850 RAW files but this is just my feeling on the detail, rendering and DR. The Z7 adds it own special sauce over the D850 sensor

Thank you very much, Charles. Much appreciated.
Yes, I just wonder about T&C as well, there is some useful info interspersed with some quite dubious info which, as I said, seems to be aimed at click baiting.
As for cockatoos, the secret is, don't feed them! As soon as you stop feeding them, they them take it out on your home and they can get quite aggressive as well. On the flip side, they are such characterful birds and really funny to watch but as you say, can be VERY noisy!
