p.9 #1 · Official Z Series Camera and Lens Discussion

This afternoon did I drove to my store and collected my Z7 in kit with the FTZ and 24-70mm along with the 35mm. More testing will be done over the coming days but happy to see that my Sigma 85mm f/1.4 ART works just fine with snappy AF and such on the Z7.

Curiouser and curiouser - just got an email form B&H that my order has shipped in two packages from Florence NJ.
One tracking # shows delivery tomorrow the other "not found" but it is unclear which box contains what.

My local dealer says it looks like mine will be in tomorrow. I will have to do a serious bunch of testing on my 3rd party lenses before making my final decision. I will report my results.

I skimmed the online manual for the Z7 today to see if I could find anything about negative reversal and using the ES-2. I did not find anything in the manual so called Nikon USA - they needed to "escalate" the question and promised to get back to me.
I have only tried negative reversal briefly on the D850 and it is a nice feature to have - if a bit kludgy in operation. I certainly have plans to use it more on long dark winter evenings. I had hoped that since it only works in live view on the D850

Just received an email from Nikon:

"Thank you for being patient on waiting for a response. The Z7 and the Z6 do not have the negative digitizing option like the D850 does. Unfortunately you can not do the negative reversal."

Not a deal breaker for me but increases the likelihood that my two body kit will wind up being a Z7 and my D850, and not a Z6 along with the Z7.

Picked up my Z7, 24-70, 35 and FTZ earlier today. First impressions are very good. The FTZ worked great with the G, E, and ZF.2 lenses I tried.

This is disappointing to me as well, but the ES-2 should work fine otherwise.

Disappointed with B&H, ordered within minutes and the free shipping was expedited which I thought would be overnight.
Mine got shipped today but is 3 day shipping, yet they are offering free overnight on newer orders. Its like getting penalized for ordering right after preorder started.

THey should upgrade the early orders to overnight if they are offering it for free.

Just a FYI: for those of you who are stuck in pre-order limbo, Competitive Camera in Dallas still has the Z7 kit in stock. I was able to place an order and have it shipped overnight for delivery tomorrow.

I was going to wait to pick up the 35s until the z7/ftz arrived, but stopped by the shop on the way home. They did receive 2 Z7 kits which have been allocated. They're assuming the z7/ftz combo will arrive tomorrow

@suteetat@ would it be a worthwhile test of the 500pf at the 'controversial' shutter speeds with the z7?

I tried it quickly this morning and it seems that the problematic shutter speeds is still there with Z7
I will post the result in 500PF thread, bummer.

I haven’t heard of that? What is the problematic shutter speed?

With 500/5.6PF, a few people found that with VR on, SS around 1/100s is not so good when tried on D850/D500.
The range seems to be from 1/60-1/125 so far.
I just posted a sample on 500PF thread. SS 1/40 gave better result than 1/60-1/100.
Kind of like 300PF when first release. We were hoping that may be different mass of Z7 with no mirror shock etc, it might work better than D850 but unfortunately, looks like the problem persists with Z7 as well.

Speaking of mirror shock, did you shoot in silent mode?

And thank you for spending your time in doing these test

I just had the same thought. I am off to work now but will
try Z7 with electronic shutter and see if it makes any different
sometimes this weekend.

Is there a second shutter button to use when the camera is held in portrait mode?

At this time a battery grip is in design from the discussions with Nikon engineers, as for the battery grip having a vertical/portrait shutter release as well as controls, it doesnt appear to be occurring.

I will be picking up my Z7 in about 1 week as it has been put aside for me. This evening went down to my Brisbane store just deciding whether to move on my D850 and just opt for the Z7 or keep both. The D850 and Z7 are different and yet complimentary. I had forgotten how different it was to use a MILC again particularly after spending a month in Spain using the D850 with the 28E, 58G and 105E. Yes the D850 is larger and heavier but it is surprisingly ergonomic for carrying with you and taking quick dynamic shots.

Ergonomically the Z7 feels great in the hand particularly with the 35/1.8s and 24-70/4s. The FTZ adapter is so light you barely notice it unlike so many other adapters. I tested the Z 35/1.8s and 24-70/4s briefly and both felt great, responsive AF and accurate. Obviously there are many settings to optimize both AF-S and AF-C so I am sure this will take quite some time to learn and get the best response and accuracy as did the D850.

The EVF is excellent and just works without feeling like a EVF. The IBIS is wonderful as you watch your shots steady and maintains a stillness as you compose your shot.

I tested my 28E, 58G and 105E and all worked seamlessly.

Just a quick grab shot this evening

Z7 and 105E from RAW post processed in Lr.
