p.3 #1 · Official Z Series Camera and Lens Discussion

A question regarding Z lenses: One thing I don't get about the mirrorless discussion is people saying the lenses for MILC cameras can be smaller and lighter. But the Z mount is way bigger than the F mount.

So will f/1.4 lenses or f/2.8 zooms be able to be smaller than their F mount counterparts at all? And if yes, could you explain to my why that is?

Thanks!

Markus

The two prime S lenses looks to have an improved IQ over their DSLR siblings so I guess the question is, how large would you need to make the DSLR 1.8's to achieve the same IQ?

More general questions on mirrorless vs DSLR lenses might be better to discuss elsewhere.

Totally agree! We have the older 50/1.4G and 50/1.8G and theses lenses although very good are very dated now. The 50/1.8G is still there if you need a very light to go lens.

This has been my aguement for a number of years that with FF MILC fastish modern glass the size does not reduce by much. Of course the material selection can reduce the weight but optic design limits the size reduction.

You can always adapt MF small lenses if this is the preferred choice

A few Z7 AF test video

Thanks Michael These are excellent examples of AF at least with videos. I do like how the second video AF in the later part behaves similar to the 3D mode.

I have had hands on the Z7 on two occasions. I tried the silent mode, and yes, it is absolutely silent. I actually had to review the images to be sure I took one. In todays live talk from Nikon there was a photographer who shot a movie set like you want to, and she said it was absolutely silent as well.

Thank you very much for confirming this about the Z7!
Having it backed up by another fellow Unit Stills photographer using it exactly like I would, was also appreciated. It's such a small niche of work (in relation to other main photography jobs anyway) that I didn't think I'd see feedback from one so soon!

The IBIS feature (finally, Nikon!) is also a huge plus to me, too.

Now I'll wait until I can get my hands on one to test out in the store and check the ergonomics, low-light focus, etc. but already I see some promise in being able to stay with Nikon in future.

Unfortunately I didn't hear the live talk. I wonder if the Z6 also has the same silent feature...

The live talk can still be viewed. All going well, it should end up on Youtube. Carol Duzy, Deanne Fitzmaurice, Joe McNally put the Nikon Z in context. Moderated by Mike Corrado. A long watch with iconic images in the introduction, which in many ways define major catastrophes over the past 2 decades. The profiles of photographers etc and interviews start about 16:00. Then discussion

I’m sure I read somewhere that early purchasers would get a free XQD card thrown in with the Z series camera.

Can anybody confirm this?

It may be that it was only going to apply to the US as I watched an Indian unboxing and there was no mention of an XQD card.

That is true in the U.K. but supplies are limited and they don’t say how many will be given away:

Great if you live in the UK but it seems to be dealer specific.

Maybe it was on the website when I preordered and has now been taken down. I don’t actually need one as I have 2 for my D850 but another would be nice.

Dunno. I do recall reading that Nikon (UK?) we’re doing this for all customers, not sure where, or if that was only a rumour.

Actually, at the local camera store where I put my deposit, in they were giving both a XQD card (64 GB) and an extra battery with the camera. These items were included on my receipt for the order.
So at least in some stores in the U.S. they were doing it. It may have been limited to those attending the hands on events. I am not sure.

When you factor the cost of those two items the price is actually about equal to the Sony competition.

I got the confirmation that I'll get my Z7 + 24-70mm f4 + FTZ on Friday Sept-28.

Not sure yet about the 35mm f1.8 Z.

Cheers,
Bernard
