I have been using LR for 10 years
I feel that C1 is a lot better overall.
But when I go to edit a batch, I feel like I'm in quick sand using C1.
It's going to take a long time!
+1 Agree that C1 produces a better initial file (I also have both) but it is painful to learn. I gave up and went back to LR - the non subscription one - but it sounds like the subscription model can at least read the z7 files.

In customary fashion, Ming Thein writes well, includes useful details, and maintains a balanced outlook. Some random points that caught my eye: 24-70/4 is excellent (and collapsible), switching between review and LiveView has black-out delays, CIPA battery life is better for his use pattern but it's no DSLR, grip has the pinky problem, controls on a Z7 vertical grip are right out, OLED on top desk, limited readout for battery status.
In summary, his review and illustrations solidify my intention to skip this generation of Z. It really feels positioned as a prosumer product that looks to counter Sony rather than supplant their D8XX DSLRs—let alone the single-digit line. I really want a bigger body for the grip, controls, and battery options. A slightly smaller Z version of the D3X, please.

Anyone have advice on the best setup for moving subject success?
I have it on face recognition, af speed set to as fast as it goes and af tracking sensitivity to the highest.
While my first tests outdoors weren’t very successful, 105mm 1.4 ftz adapter, with my wife slowly walking towards me, 8fps , 14bit , 6 out of 8 frames were out of focus... the D850 nailed them all.
I’m not expecting 100% success, but trying to get better results than that.

I finally got a chance to hold Z7 with 35mm F1.8S in a local store, and I know by now that I really want Z6 with that lens, to dive into the system.
It fills like Nikon, and EVF and LCD are the best I've seen so far.
On plus side, something that nobody mentioned, at least I haven't seen it yet, no issues with polarized glasses, at all, neither horizontally, nor vertically.
I'm glad that I didn't buy A73, I was very close, not being able to see back screen in horizontal position would bother me, big time.
There was too many people there, so I didn't test AF and other things, but as I said, I liked it a lot, and Z system made me to finally get over Fuji X system.
Nikon rep mentioned pin point focus, stating it won't be implemented on Z6, but he wasn't sure.
He said, the reason is fewer number of phase detection focus points on Z6, but as far as I understood, this feature is based on contrast detection.
I didn't want to argue with him, but I hope he was wrong!
P.S. The shutter sound is so sweet, second best IMO, right after X-H1, something that I never, ever, liked on any Sony A7xxx cameras, at least those I had a chance to play with.

You made right choice. It is not about IQ or regular shooting that D850 can do Z7 can’t. (At least based on what I know your shooting style, Z7 might do.) it is all about overall shooting experience, viewing, control and handling.
Only a day with Z7 with those R and ZF, I already miss D850. I hope once Leica M adapter available and after Nikon fix focus confirmation for manual lens, I will like Z7 more for those small RF glass.
BTW, 28E is superb on Z7, so sharp. This is the best Nikon glass I ever used.
Did you try any manual F mount glass with electronic contact eg Zeiss lens. Wondering if focus confirmation works with these lenses.

There's no AF confirm (Arrows/af dot or Green square) with my Zeiss ZF.2 135mm. I will say that manual focus of this lens seems very easy, at least in good light.

I did have my D850 last night when I was putting the Z7 through its paces. I tested all the lenses possible, the 35/1.8s and 24-40/4s both superb. I also tested my travel trio, 28E, 105E and 58G and they worked seamlessly with the Z7 with the FTZ adapter.
What I did find was when I picked up my hand the Z7 and 28E/FTZ adapter and D850 and 28E, I preferred the feel of the D850 combo in hand. This may just be that I am very accustomed to using the D850/28E combo now.
The Z7 will make for a superb travel combo. I can see Marisa taking my Z7 from me ...Show more →
You have the 58mm f/1.4G? How is the Face AF with it? I was hoping for Eye AF but in theory, Face AF should suffice. I love my 58mm but hitting focus was always a little challenging, with the Z7 I was hoping to be able to get more keepers with it
Well that was the first decent and balanced review of the Z7. I look forward to the opinion of Thom Hogan, Nasim Mansurov and Brad Hill before renting out the body / lens combo to make my final decision. Those are the photographers whose opinion I trust and more importantly, respect.

Has anyone received the 35mm z lens? I’m wonder how the native lenses focus vs the adapted ?
I only have adapted lenses and the focus fine but they are very noisy in video, are the z lenses less jittery while following focus?
p.12 #13 · Official Z Series Camera and Lens Discussion
Did you try auto area mode? Today, the light is much better. With 24-70s, its hit rate is very high, seems never focus to back eyes. I feel the speed is about the same as D850.
I tried hit OK to initiate tracking face but feel that is really for video accuracy and speed. Just use auto area with AF on focus seems giving better and faster tracking. The DPAF squre will lock face if it detect that.

Yes, 58G is noisy. 28E is quieter. 24-70s is quiet.

I picked up my Z7 today, and waved goodbye to my D850. I miss it, but a majority of my work is stills, I don't do any fast tracking, so for me the Z7 makes sense.
I'm sure it will have its quirks, but just holding it was like holding a normal Nikon, I like it.
I'll post some pics when the battery is done charging.

Make perfect sense from your description. Congratulation! It is a great tool.

In the custom menu -> Movie -> g6 Highlight Display... The option is greyed out for me. If I try to enable it, I get the error "This option is not available at the current settings or in the camera's current state."
Any ideas?
I haven't really made any meaningful changes in the settings that I know of outside of going to 4k 30.
I've searched the manual for "highlight display" term and nothing references limits to your settings...
