Totally loving the Z7 with lenses over 50mm, hopefully a good Leica M adapter comes my way, but, I think I may give up on 135 format wide angle period. I have yet to try the Milvus 25 or older ZF2 25/2. I love the z7 for portability and ease of use. But.

16 bit color medium format pre-owned is nearly the same the cost as Elmar 24 + M10-p. Not as portable of course, but file quality is much better.

How long will 24x36 full frame users put up with 14 bit color? Surely it's not a technical matter anymore. I would put up with 1 frame per second for 16 bit raw from my Z7. Cartelization?

Wonderful. I have to keep reminding myself that it's a kit zoom.

Thank you for all your comments. I appreciate. We all know it is the Z7 who took the image.

I just upload a quarter of my images on my computer, the more I go through with them, the more I realize how special Z7 it is. It really helped me create the images I wanted. All the setting I needed are within sec to reach, I never even need to think about it during shooting. Under strong wind, under quick light change within sec...All works out nicely.

Z7 with 24-70S remind me RX1 which is still my favorite travel camera. Z7/24-70S is RX1 with additional 24~34mm and 36~70mm. It is not only the sharpness but color, contrast and file quality also approach RX1 with even more.(There is no loss compress in Z7's 45M file like RX1's.) For traveling, this camera setup set the bar so high that none of other system I used approach this. At $600, 24-70 is biggest bargain I ever have, especially compare to 24-70G at $1800 and 24~70E at $2400.

Finally, a pancake lens for the Z7!

Ignoring for a sec putting on a low fi Russian lens onto to a 47mp latest and greatest, it actually works better than on my 24mp Leica! On that camera there was far more smearing in the corners, and magenta colour shifts.
So there is that..

After another field trip. A few things I want to update.

First, about operation with glove. The last time I was at Yosemite, I wear very thin ones like those golf glove. I feel it is adequate. This time, I wear a little thicker one with fleece during cold morning. I have to take them off for some operation. In this regards, D850 is still better IMO. However, if you only want some basic setting such as format change (through FN2), AF change (through FN1) or display change for level, histogram etc.... you will be just fine. Z7 still feel better than A7x I had in this regard.

2nd, use silent shutter will improve shutter count for battery. I unscientifically estimated it will get at least 20% more images. If you maximize LCD brightness under sun and use the Z7 to go through images and delete unwanted images or do a lot of chimp, the battery life will be significantly shorter. That high quality LCD (I'd say the same with EVF) is very power hungry. However, I will say Z7 is very good for image review at hotel without a laptop, fast with nice viewing quality. I do that every night at hotel and recharge the battery when sleep before next sunrise. I always have two full battery before a new day shooting just in case.

3rd, About AF, for AF-S, this is the best AFS performance I ever have, bar none, super fast and accurate. For AF-C, with only native lens I have (24-70) and a few Native F glasses, I'd say it is not at the level of D700 even, not to say D810/D750 or even D850. It can do video AF beautifully, but with still AFC image, I feel there might be a latency between AF lock and image taken under challenge condition (such as close distance toward you movement). At least it feels that way.

Most AF system rely on prediction in algorithm , even Nikon's best DSLR do that. Given their SLR PDAF performance is leading in industry, I'd say Nikon certainly know how to do it correctly, maybe there is some challenge to put their existing tech on image sensor, or due to processor limitation. Or Z's AF engine was not fully ready at the time of introduction that upon firmware update. Or Nikon purposely crimp it to not undercut their DSLR sale. No matter what reason, I do think Nikon can potentially improve this through firmware update because big potion of modern day AF performance is software based. Is this an issue for me? Not at all. I'd love to have it but I am totally fine with it as is.

I just ordered 300PF. It was out of stock everywhere before my trip and now finally in stock. I can imagine this will be a lovely setup for bird non BIF case during travelling. (I am sure It is also capable do BIF under lots of case.) Another reason I prefer Z7. Just for reaching, it worths the prime to me already. Depend on how much I like the experience, I might just add 500PF as well once its in stock What a nice system.

I liked all the pictures you posted before, but these ones are really outstanding, I do love them!

I must say, BTW, that I've resisted the temptation of a Z7... buying one! I've done just the typical boring test shots with the 24-70, but everything seems promising. I'm eagerly waiting for my Leica M adapter to come from China!

Thank you Charles, Felipe. You guys are too kind. I am glad you like the images. I'd say these images can be taken with any cameras introduced in last 5 years or so, no matter it is Nikon, Leica, or Sony, Canon.

However I have to say Z7 make it a very easy and enjoyable process. This is the only differentiator for modern day camera selection, pick the one work best for you.

Michael, those are some beautiful shots! You will love the 300 PF. It also works very well with the 1.4x.

I've been stalking this thread while contemplating a Z7 as a second body for M lenses (and filming w Nikon zooms). I found the A7riii was great with my 50 and 90, good except the edges for the 35 FLE, but unusable with the 18 (and great with their 24-105). It looks like the Z is a bit better. I really hope Leica hurrys up and puts body stabilization and 50mp in the next M!

To use all my MF Nikkors, I've always wanted a mirrorless camera with a 36mmx24mm Sensor. I bought a Sony A7 as soon as it was available, and I've been using it ever since. Now, finally, it's time to sell it - I never liked it, I never really felt comfortable with it, it's always been more of a hassle, no love. I got the Z7 now. Images taken with the Z7 and my Nikkors would not qualify for this thread/forum. But then, the Sony A7 still had a positive effect: I've bought some third party lenses that would not have worked on an F-Mount Nikon at all, but now, still can be used on a Nikon camera.

I'm wondering, by the way, why there is so much going on in the Voigtlander 40/1.2 and 50/1.2 threads, while nobody seems to have the wider 35/1.2. Is it so bad? Well, I'm just starting to get used to the combo... First steps.

The combo: Nikon Z7, Novoflex Leica M -> Nikon Z, Voigtländer Nokton II 35mm 1:1.2

I'm sure it is not 'so bad'. It is an older design than the two lenses you mention, so even though it is the second version it probably lags in ultimate IQ. For me, however, using Leica bodies, this lens just seemed too large, long and heavy. I still woulldn,t mount it on an M body, and it does look like quite a size even on the Z7.

Are you finding you can focus quickly and accurately with this lens on the Z7? Or do you need to use magnification.

Yea the 35 is good, the 40 is better, haven’t tried the 50 yet. Also the 35 is priced comparatively high to the better performing and smaller 40.

MF without magnification is MUCH easier on these higher res EVFs (still A7III for me) but you’ll still want Mag for critical focus.
