People tend to get frustrated with Insta because they just post pictures and walk away and wonder why they don't have anyone interacting with them. You have to put real work into it to get real engagement.

It's simple. It's social...it's marketing...it's...selling your brand/image/self.
It's like anything else that anyone has ever leveraged for making business contacts, gaining a following, etc. It's "21st Century", but the general truths are the same as always. Different methods? Sure.
Running through to add people as well. I enjoy looking at what others post. It’s an easy way to quickly see a wide variety of styles. See what I can try. Often times you can only search for ideas you already have, with instagram it’s nice to see many other ideas people have come up with for photography.
