Best to ask Laowa to publish a list of approved filters

I already asked them about it. Since they develop filters as well, it's likely they will offer the lens with a filter set.

Didn't see any mention of this but the first thing I would do is try this out with their Magic Shift adapter.

I think it would make an effective 14-24 TS.

Sounds fun to me.

I believe their Magic Shift Converter only works with adapted lenses. (Canon EF to Sony E)
It can't be used with native E-mount lenses.

oh, this is aggravating...I have been going back and forth for a month now between Samyangs, Sigmas, Zeiss, Sony, and had finally settled on the mf Laowa 15 f/2 and then they go and do this!!

I will still probably get the Laowa 15 f/2 or the 14mm Sigma f/1.8 just because I keep telling myself Im going to try astrophotography this year but who am I kidding? 99.9% of my wide need is real estate and architectural

Well I would not give it up the Laowa 15 f2. Focusing will certainly be easier at F2 for sure in low light and you may also run into shooting almost wide open if you have some motion going on. Something to be said about having a F2. I have it now and yea this is very interesting but not sure I want to give up my 15 either. It’s a tough call in a lot of ways. I love my 15

The good news it’s relatively a bargain at its cost. I may wind up with both

Yea I came real close to buying one but it would have to be a Canon Mount.

I used one of these with the Laowa 15/2 last time I shot Milky Way. I've used their filters for years with the telescopes. Just remember custom white balance. I can't see this working with the L 10-18 though for reasons already mentioned plus no need with screw in filters-

Here is some info from my Laowa's source:

"The lens will come with a clear UV filter and ND filter will be sold as an accessory"

It was also said that the ND filters offered will be of very high quality.

Heida offers normal as well as nano pro line of filters. Later are better. The ones they offer in a set of 3 are normal filters.

Fred Miranda wrote:
Haida does offer 37mm for their NDs and it could be a good option as long as their glass thickness matches the lens' design.
I have a few of them for other lenses and although high quality, there is significant color cast.

This really suggests that they are taking IQ especially seriously.

Now we just have to hope the "to be confirmed" 7 blade aperture doesn't happen.

8 would be fine, if straight, and so would five, in the event that they can't do 10!

Anything but 7 or nine for a lens like this. And I hope not curved, for a slow ultra wide!

I've been using Haida and NISI for a while now (since I live in China and they are very easy to come by) and I have to say I have not noticed any colour cast whatsoever with my Haida filters (on-line multiple head to head testing vs other top filters seem to confirm that too, they are often noted for their lack of a colour cast). What cast are you finding, how strong is it and is it linear or only in corners ?

I'm using the Haida Slim Pro II MC in 3, 6 and 10 stops. all in 52mm with step down rings to 49mm and 37mm (for the Voigtlanders).

Sunstars and flare control will be a big make or break for this lens. I hope Laowa gets this.

So far

pros: light, crazy wide, zoom, ability to (potentially) replace 10, 12, 15, 18 primes for landscapers, major filter solution.

cons: slow (no biggie for landscapers), variable aperture, no exif, no af (although very minor con at these lengths)

Unknowns: corner sharpness, distortion control, flare resistance, sunstar rendering, sample variation, and chromatic aberrations of all sorts

Yes, the latest Haida ND filters are excellent.

I have a feeling that 10-blade aperture is out so I'm hoping for 5 straight blades now. (For a 10-point sunstar)
The current Laowa 15/2 has 7 blades but at least they are straight.
The good news is that Laowa is listening and working on this so I"m hoping this lens will capture great sunstars when available.

A while back we did a huge test on ND filters and color casts. Haida was very very good. I either buy Haida or Breakthrough as they always seemed to be the most neutral. Haidas also are very well priced

Fred any word on release. Like to buy one soon or at least test one. And throw my name in the hat if they need a tester. I’m in on that

This was not disclosed to me since the lens is still in development.

I bought Haida 100x150's ND grads for the Actus after unintentionally offering up my resin Lee kit to the mountain gods in exchange for a successful day of shooting. They're a little warm, but they've given me no reason to complain. And I like the aluminum package. They're a bit bulky to pack, but I have no fear about tossing them into a side pocket with various other needful things.
