I am thinking about going to Athens and doing the 5K with my wife. What cycling group do you belong to? I was starting to train for my first Triathlon while being stationed (military) in Seoul Korea, but I have neglected my training for almost 9 months so it is back to basics.
I'd take the 50-500. From what I've seen people post here and on other forums I'd say the Canon 100-400L and the Sigma 50-500 are the most popular zoom lenses.
I'd also say the 50-500 will outperform the 70-200 w/2x TC.
I'll be trying to catch the 2 practices tommorow- the Blue Angles fly almost every day to maintain keep their muscle memory. Since I won't be on-base and going thru security I'll have my 70-200, 300L and 400L with me.
Hey Lowbyte.. Wish I could join you out there tomorrow. I had to drive through Marietta today and they were flying everywhere. The only day Id have even a slight chance of going would be Sunday. And last I heard they were calling for rain. Shoot me a link to your website again so I can check out some shots. See ya!
This is going to be a busy weekend for events. The AJC Autoshow, The Air Show, Bike races in Athens and Roswell and I have meetings all day Friday and Saturday.
Rich I ride every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at Stone Mountain with 5 to 8 others (depending on who all shows up). I usually ride in the Athens Twilight Gambler ride on the Saturday morning before the Criteriun but can't this year because of my meeting. I plan on leaving for Athens soon after my meeting on Saturday and will meet my fellow bikers there. We have had a great time every year I have attended this event. If you want to try to get together while there drop me an email or PM.
I would love to try to get to the Air Show on Sunday if I can just work out a way.
I am probably going to head over on Saturday too. I would love to be able to take all of my gear but I think I am going to go with my 70-200 2.8 + a 1.4x. I am also debating on trying to get my 300 F4 in but am not sure if that would fly. The last time they were in town I shot them with a Nikon D2h and an 80-400. I looked at most of my shots and they were in the 300mm range. If you are inside the base and close to show center then the 50-500 may be overkill. I am not familiar with the 50-500 so how does the weight compare. Remember that you will holding it for several hours.
I will be staying on Jimmy Carter Blvd in Norcross next Tues. and Wed. I am looking for things to photograph in the area after work. Is there anything of interest?
Last time they were here, I shot with my 50-500 on a D30. I've got 1DMII now, so it will be heavier but better. I shot close to show center and I think I was in the 300-400 range most of the time.
I think I am going to end up bringing the 50-500. Rather be safe than sorry and it will be better for some of the static displays. If you see someone close to the center with a 50-500 and a 1DMKII, come say hey!
Well it looks like the weather will be perfect tommorow- too bad I'll be in SC. I shot todays practice from a field at the east end of the runway, here are a couple of quick hits:
In my first pass quick look, I'm not that happy with the bulk of the shots, it didn't look anywhere near that hazy today. Hopefully you guys will have better luck from the flghtline.
Be warned tho- the article in the AJC indicates this will be a total quagmire. They are only going to let in the first 50k people who hit the door- the police are going to be out directing traffic everywhere that side of Cobb. The show is free, but if you are parked anywhere but on the Lockheed grounds the shuttle buses will cost $2 a head. Good Luck.
Tips: The guy in the F86 is flying L_o_w, if you right on the flightline, you can get shots with him 20 feet off the ground- be prepared! Most of the Blues formations will come in low from the west towards the east following the runway.
Will do. I will be there with a former co-worker. I will have my MkII with a 70-200 + 1.4x. You can't miss him he is about 6' 7" and will have a 20D We are going to try to get there around the start of the show.
The MkII should be great with the 50-500.
See you there. If anyone else is going to be there look us up!
The weather report for tommorow is showing 20% chance of rain, so if anyone else is going to head to Dobbins PM/email me and we can figure out a way to meet up.
Lowbyte, I especially like the "trailing into the sun" photo.
I went to a Gwinnett Gladiators game on Friday. I think I learned enough to do a better job next time. They should be coming back on Wednesday if they lose tonight. If they win tonight, they should be coming back for several more games. Let me know if anyone is interested in going. I got $17 seats row D(4th row) inside the blue line that I purchased the day of the game. You can't do that in the NHL. We should be able to get good seats.
Robin- I'd be open to attend the Gladiators game on Monday the 8th...
I love the sun-flare picture, its not the everyday Blue Angels photo. I want to work some photoshop wizzardy to bring up the exposure of the planes just a bit. I just have to learn how
I am headed up to the NHRA Southern Nationals in Commerce at the Atlanta Dragway on Fri and Sat. Friday is night qualifiing and always a blast. If anyone is interested in 14,000 horsepower on the quarter-mile let me know.
I would love to photograph the Southern Nationals again. I did this for many years back in the 80's with "Kodachrome" and still have many of those pictures. Only problem is I am in Panama City Beach for the Thunder Beach Spring Rally which is also this weekend. Be sure to shoot lots of action shots to post. "Be sure to take some ear plugs".
Love the Blue Angel photos, especially the one with the sun peeping through with the trailing jets. That's a great photo.
I did pick up a couple of tickets for Friday's game. If someone wants to go with me, let me know. They are also row D tickets. This time, they are in section 117 close to the blue line. You should be able to move around a bit to get whatever perspective you want.
Its there. It has something to do with the way the forum interacts with your browser cache. Glad to see it isn't just me. IIRC the easiest way to get out of the problem is to back up to the "Member Meetings and Events" page, then click on "Last:" after the Atlanta thread. That should jump you to the new page.
Grant, glad you like the BA "sun" photo, its been a hit with everyone so far. Too bad I'll miss you at the Summer Nationals.

Selecting "Last" doesn't work for me. If there is just one post on the last page, I don't know it's there unless I check. I go to the last page indicated and just add one to the number on the end of the URL. If there is another page, I'll see it then.
It always seemed to be a problem when there was only one post on the last page. Now, it seems to hide the last page if there are either one or two posts there. It doesn't seem to matter what computer I use. I only notice the problem on this thread. Is it just me?
