Love those baby Gorilla shots. The first picture with the Scuba guy is pretty neat too. I didn't do anygood with the Lemurs either Robin. I think you just have to be really good and fast at manual focusing. I could probably make the zoo on Saturday and I may try to go to Cleveland TN on the afternoon of the 27th for the Sandhill Cranes and shoot on the 28th. Should be prime time for the Cranes.

Robin,
I also like your diver, shark and gorilla babies pictures.
Grant, I'm jealous about the sandhill cranes! I'm going out to the Sundance Film Festival and skiing tomorrow for a week though.

Hope I can get together with you guys after I get back!

Enjoy,

Todd

Hi guys! Good shots! I feel like I was at the zoo and the aquarium this weekend! Todd...your bird shots just keep getting better and better. You have a lot more patience than I do. By the time I see a bird, come back in the house, attatch the right lens, change a diaper or two, format a card, etc...the birds in my backyard have flown south! !
I can't wait to get together again!

Hi all,

I plan to meet some friends at I-75 and Exit 27 in Cleveland, TN Friday evening Jan. 27 to shoot the Sand Hill Cranes at Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge Saturday morning on the 28th. Plans at the moment are to have breakfast at Denny's around 7:00 am (I think they are open at 7) before going to the refuge. We will be staying at the Comfort Inn Friday evening.

Anyone interested in joining in?

Weather at the moment looks good for Saturday.

Grant

Grant,

If the weather will hold out I may join you for breakfast Saturday morning. Is the Denny's at the exit of I-75 and exit 27?? I will most likely drive up Saturday morning and return that same evening, though I will pack a bag incase I feel the need to shoot Sunday also.

Anyone carrying to join.....shoot me an email or PM.

Cheers
Gary

Hi Gary,

Hope you can join us. My long time friends and co-authors of our book on Cumberland Island are coming up with me as well as their daughter Natalie. We will be leaving as soon as they can get off work on Friday and spend the night at Comfort Inn in Cleveland, TN I-75 and Exit 27. the denny's is supposed to be at that exit too. I think Mark and Nancy will be there as well as another local "Mark" who first let us know about the Sandhill Cranes.

I haven't been photographing much at all lately but did get the 500 out today to get it ready for this weekend. Here's a few backyard birds from those shots.

I'm gonna need a longer lens before I can do some of the "Todd and Grant quality" bird photos. Grant, good luck with the cranes.

I've run out of money and a wide fast lens in first in line(16-35 F/2.8L). Then, I can look at something like the 100-400mm lens for general wildlife/birds.

I edited an earlier panda shot for 8x10 crop: http://www.pbase.com/robinwalker/image/55278033

Nice shots Grant!

Sorry I'm not going to be able to join you all this weekend. I just got home from skiing and I'm going to Augusta for work on Monday so I need to take care of stuff at home this weekend. I'll really look forward to hearing about the trip and seeing the photos though.

In case anyone else may be interested, I signed up for a bird photography workshop with Arthur Morris down at Fort deSoto March 24-26. I've not done a workshop like this before and I'm hoping to learn how to improve my technique. I believe there are still some openings. You can check out his website at www.birdsasart.com. For those that can't go but are interested in bird photography I'd be happy to share what I've learned when I return.

Robert, Robin and Todd, Wish you guys could make it and I hope the weather hold out for us. Should be an interesting place. Robin that's a pretty sharp Panda shot. Were you using the 24-105? Can't decide if I want to give up my 24-70 and get one just yet. Todd, I have made a hundred or more trips to Augusta in the morning hours so be sure to take sunglasses for that early morning sun. If you come home in the afternoon you will need them again.

The Art Morris workshop should be very informative. I have run into Art a couple of times in Florida and he really seemed to have a way with people. He has some fascinating books out with outstanding photography. If you don't have one of them yet you may want to get one. You should learn a lot at the workshop. Fort Desoto is also a great place to photograph and the latter part of March should be a really good time too.

Aaron, Mark and Nancy and Gary hope to see you in the morning.

Robert, Pull hard for those Thrashers.

I guess you know we want to see pictures.

This was taken with the 70-200 F2.8L IS.

I really like the 24-105 IS as a walk around lens. It replaced my 28-135 IS. I just don't know if I would dump a 24-70 2.8 if I was used to the faster glass. Eventually, I want both. No matter which one you have, you'll probably wish you had the features(F2.8 vs. IS & 105mm) of the other lens.

We had beautiful weather at Hiwasee Wildlife Refuge but the Sanhills were quite a distance away. Most were in a field that was far away and would have been hard to reach even with a 600mm and 2X. The Ranger there was extremely nice and tried to lead us to another location where we might have a chance to get closer. These guys are tough to get close to and every time we would find them they would be gone before we could even get set up with the big lens. They estimate around 10,000 birds within the Reserve.

I had a great time photographing with Aaron, Mark, and Mark II, Larry, Joanne and Natalie.

Here is one shot that you can get an idea of the numbers of birds that were there.

Will try to post more as I get a chance to look them over.
