Dave, there is no EXIF data in the pics. You are converting to sRGB before posting right? What color space are you shooting in or are you shooting RAW?
Craig how can i keep the exif data in the image? i'm hosting via picasa web so i'm sure thats the issue. I have just now as of this last 20 minutes coverted to srgb prior to posting for the first time.... it takes away alot of my frustrations, none of my changes were showing up before... thanks to mark i know why now.
I don't have picasa but it appears that if you are using the picasa software you can see your exif data. I don't think anyone else gets to see it. That was one of the many reasons I ended up going with pbase for images I want to quickly share and not tie up space on my site.
As long as you don't use the auto save to web feature in PS then the exif stays with theimages as it is uploaded
I'm going to grab one of Dave's images and see if saving it to the computer brings the exif back.
I don't have PS installed right now. I do own CS2 but I'm between switching computers and only have my dark side stuff loaded at this time.
CS3 may be different, but in CS2 if I remember correctly, there was no way to save the JPEG with the EXIF data attached. I used a product called EXIF-Utils (you have to buy it AND be computer savvy to use it) and wrote some scripts that would transfer the EXIF from the original RAW to the JPEG. I will supply the scripts if anyone is interested. I think the utils are about $30.
I'm glad Mark pointed out the need to convert to sRGB before posting to the web. I typically save the file as a PSD, then convert the profile, then crop and size for the web, then final sharpen for the web (each output medium has different sharpening requirements) and then finally 'save for the web'.
CS3 is a very large, complicated and powerful application. There are any number of ways to achieve a good result, and even more ways to screw it up. Enjoy the learning curve. I'm still near the bottom.
interesting... Dave was kind enough to send me one of his pics and the color space is opRGB
Had to look that one up . I'm not a graphics guy or anything but I hadn't heard of optional RGB. PS seems to recognize it but I hadn't and I'm not exactly sure how it got assigned in the first place.
Dave, are you using bridge to import your pics? Maybe it is in a settings box there somewhere kind of hidden?
It's probably overkill 99% of the time but I like to work in pro photo and convert to sRGB only for viewing on the web.
I've only been playing with CS3 for a little while but if you do it like Crashy does then the exif should stay attached. In CS2 it only went away if using the save for web process.
And speaking of processing. I have some to do on an image or 2...
in my camera i have Adobe rgb selected, i dont use bridge or anything because the one i sent you was shot as a jpg not a raw, so i sent you the jpg as it came from the camera. i just use the windows importer when i plug my memory card into the reader.
Well, Grant wanted to see this in b&w so here it is. The channel mixer in CS3 is a lot different than cs2. Not even sure it is the best option anymore. I do like the revised tool though.
I don't know if this is too dark overall or not. I was trying to keep the keys as "pearl" as possible while also not blowing out the whites much past where it is on his shoulder
Dave - sRGB pics definitely looking better. Keep hunting for the culprit - I know some cameras have a color space you can select in-camera. Not sure about your body though.
Mark - I like the B&W conversion - I'd say that you about nailed it... I wouldn't want the whites much whiter than they're at now. That said, it's just my opinion
I switch back and forth between jpg and raw, if its a sports shoot well they just dont make SD cards big enough yet - well not for sale at least that can handle 15 mb raw files.
for portraits i tend to do raw.
i also have a feeling changing the hosting site to something else may help with the compression i'm still seeing. although colors are certainly more vivid now.
i'm really tired of waiting to hear what Canon will be releasing, I wish they would just tell us already.
I also find it frustrating that the XSi is using a SD memory card and different battery solution than the rest of the series. I thought it would be the new system, but the 50D uses the old 40D system (same body so makes sense) I understand the 40D and 5D use the same as the 1d so they can be used as backups but come on... they need to keep one standard.
that new sony isn't that impressive, but the price is nice.
Mark, That B&W looks great. Takes all that wierd color from the lights out and makes for a better image to me. Some of you may remember FM member "Sony" who did alot of concert and stage photography and posted his images almost exclusively in B&W.
With the MkIII one of the things that I really like is the ability to record in Raw on one card and jpeg on the other. I use an 8gb SD card to record in either medium or large jpg and an 8gb CF to record in Raw and I always shoot in sRGB. I have the original CS which I think is Photoshop 8 and haven't upgraded to CS3 yet but I have Elements 6.0 on my laptop because it takes up so little space on the HD and I really like it. I still use DPP for the RAW
The difference in Atlphoto's #3 and 4 is surprising.

Almost right:
- The 10,20,30.40,50 and 5D all use the same battery the BP-511.
- The 1D, 1D2, 2n, 1Ds and 1Ds2 all use the same battery pack the NP-E3.
- The 1D3 and 1Ds3 use the NP-E4 which is a LI battery.
I'm willing to give Canon a break here the 1D was released 2001(?) and maintained battery compatibility until last year. The 10d series was released in 2003 and the battery is still in use. Now take a look at the massive tech differences in those 7 years. I can average 1900 shots on my 1d2n battery, and from what I understand most 1d users carried 3 batteries to make it thru a day!
Eventually things change. This is also one of the reasons you can pick up 1d2n's and 1d2's for such a song- working pros want to carry only one battery format, the new one.
Hopefully the 5d2 (or whatever is in the pipeline) will stay in one fold or the other, I plan on finding out as soon as I can get one in my hands
Grant, thanks. I agree that elements is a great program, especially when considering the price. Spending a little time in the elements forums yields a surprising number of work arounds and secrets that really unlock about 85% of photoshop.
Marc, I heard the 5d2 is only 1 mp and uses a craftsman 12 volt car battery. You'd probably be better holding off getting one until I can afford it as well...
