Dave, KEH is one of the best known used camera equipment dealers. We are lucky enough to have them in Atlanta. They don't have a storefront, but they have a huge inventory of used and new photo gear. I have used them A LOT. I recommend a salesman named Arthur. Their website is a little difficult to navigate, but it is at www.keh.com

Shot this with the 17-40 the other night from a great spot to shoot lightning shots. Just curious what everyone thinks works best - Landscape or portrait orientation.

Hi JB! Cool shot! Personally, I like #1 the best, but I think I would like to see it with it cropped so the star is not centered so much...not sure

Thanks Tracey. I tried the off crop and it felt a little too much like its "supposed" to be that way. So I left it in the middle. Actually its a 1/2 moon with a star off to the left.
Someone in another forum suggested i go shoot it earlier in the evening so the moon would be bigger. Problem is this is shot at the Lindberg Marta Parking deck facing straight south and the moon goes across the scene from extreme left to extreme right and by the time its in the shot - its already too small to be a large moon type of shot.
I like the city at this angle though and imagine how the lightning would light up the sky! The city is much closer than it looks too - so a 50mm or even a 100 would pull it in with lightning and make some stunning shots.
The only way to get the moon into this shot was with the wide end of the 17-40.

Here it is with the 70-200 - way over for stars.

and a more normal exposure with airplanes from Hartsfield.

ok, the house is ours and I am worn out. In the morning I am captive waiting for multiple deliveries so I'm going to get my camera out and document it so we can see where we started. We have several big projects planned this winter.

I would use the new sigma but of course I left it in the camper..

thanks Dave - i wasn't sure i could answer her in time...

I generally drive around and look for places where the skyline seems to stick up out of the trees - then look for a parking deck to gain height. Not the safest place to shoot alone - so i suggest taking a body guard with you... or a dog... a big dog...

Well - maybe on a sliding scale its safe - compared to some parking decks in town. But since i was responding to Stacey - a woman - who would be out there with expensive equipment - having her husband along or some kind of personal protection - is just good advice. Stuff happens.... everywhere.

Funny how times have changed. Always before - whenever we moved, the last thing to get boxed up and the first thing opened and set up was the stereo. Now its the WiFi!

Shot at AirVenture 2008

and one by Debbie of Jim Wilson and me holding up the big glass. From left to right... 300mm, 600mm, 500mm, 800mm... - Jim is holding the 800!
http://jonberryphoto.smugmug.com/photos/345985312_85TSB-M-2.jpg

He had his tripod and wimberely behind us but he didn't use it - it was just too restrictive. I had mine - but never got it our of the car.
On the Kim Commando show last night, she said it was estimated that if each of the 1100 official photogs at the Olympics carried two cameras and two large lenses (a low estimate judging by Jim's dolly full of equipment) that there is about 21 million dollars worth of digital camera gear there. and her estimate was figuring on 5,000 per camera and 6,000 per lens. I'd hate to break it to her that the 800s there alone are each 11,900! and some of the bodies are 7800.00 - So up that estimate by at least a third!

cool... I hope to make a major show again sometime. I haven't seen a F-22 yet...

I really want a 500 for both wildlife and airshow stuff...

JB you are right about how things have changed although the first thing through the door was a boom box to get some moving tunes going.

Cool with that. Shack Blasters go nearly everywhere we go now.

Before Osh, I was toying with the idea of buying a 400 2.8... during Osh, I was toying with buying a 600... I think you're right - the 500 is probably just right. JW tells me the 400 is as much a beast as the 600 - which means too heavy for airshow. I'd like to think I could afford an 800 as its the best of all possible worlds - but 11,9 isn't in a hobbyist's budget. (neither is a 500...)
So - the 100-400 is officially up for sale ($1150.00 - KEH has this lens for $1299.00 LN - mine is just back from Canon with a complete physical and is likewise like new) as well as the 24-105 ($900.00 - KEH has this lens for $920 to $950 in LN- condition - mine is not a minus) 'cause at least a 24 TS in in my future... sorry no pizza, no cigar. Unlike those who want a quick sale - I'll offer here first before I go to ebay or craigslist or B&S.
The Mark III stays home and negotiations are beginning for a 1Ds Mark II.
Colin was closets to the hole - but a hole in one was needed - (sorry for the golf analogy) but he had inside knowledge and was disqualified from participating before he posted.

So - with that in mind - as a consolation prize - 3 FM members are invited to play a round of golf at either Windermere, Olde Atlanta or Hamilton Mill one day this fall if we can get a foursome together from here. How about it Colin, Jon U, Tracey or anyone with sticks and half a game?
