Colin, We use Kirk ball heads. I started with the BH-3. Nancy uses it now and I moved to the BH-1. I got the BH-1 for future use with a sidekick but Tracey uses her sidekick on a BH-3 and it seems to hold up just fine. There are nicer ball heads out there but these seem to be built well and are decently priced

Hey Jon - looks like you got some great shots there too!. I showed mine to Debbie and she said she wished i hadn't posed her with her hands in the tied position through the bars - as it made her look too vulnerable... I'm thinkin, yeah? I got a dirty look! Interesting you went with sepia and i went to B/W for that particular image set. Both work well.

I like the creamy pink blur in the background in the alley too - that was a great location..

Mark - my 50 stayed in the bag the whole time - either i was using Jon U's inside or switching between my 17-40 and my 70-200. Of course the 17-40 was twisted all the way to 40 and produced a 55mm shot or else I used the 70-210 at the low end and stood farther away.

Colin - i use RSS BH-55 and really like it - but its heavy. Used it with both the Manfrotto and the one I'm giving you. Works well on either - but you can pick up cheap ball heads for less than 50 bucks that do the job... in fact i might have a manfrotto ball head somewhere - but i'd have to sell it or trade for something.

atlphoto222 - Interesting shot. Just curious - why did you desaturate the majority of the image but leave the kid saturated? Tell us a little bit more about the shot

Jons B andU - That model is young as hell. And I'm the youngest regular here at 22. Anyways, nice shots of her. That 50 is butter. Interesting how in the shot up against the brick wall show that the front of her face is in focus, and part of the wall closer to you - you can almost tell exactly where the camera was due to the focus plane and the 50mm length.

Thanks for the advice on tripods and heads, y'all. I appreciate it.

Long time since I had the opportunity to shoot. A couple of shoots from this weekends with the old Nikon D200 and the 35-70 that I purchased back with the N90 many many moons ago.

Natural light with a 7ft octabox acting as a reflector of the natural light coming in from the windows.

With the 7 t octabox powered by Hensel monolight.

John - where ya been? Its like you fell off the face of the earth! If this is how you are going to come back - come back often! Those are great shots and excellent use of the octabox as a reflector.

Thanks JB.

It's been very busy at work, had a major reorg in finance and have taken on new responsibilities, in addition to my old work. Just haven't had the time to shoot.

Yeah that Octobox is pretty sweet. Had been shooting with the strobe but decided to turn the sync off and just shoot with the modeling light and the natural light. Had originally set my Wb somewhere around 3.5K but wasn't really getting much from the modeling light as it was being way overpowered by the ambient. Ended up raising the WB in Capture NX. Exposure 1/30 @ 2.8 Iso 100 with 35-70mm at 40mm.

Just received a Elinchrom Ranger RX Speed AS with the A head so looking forward to shooting a little more and working outside to overpower ambient. Really need to work on getting some fashion images.

Regards,

John

atlphoto222 - welcome to the thread - we're a testy bunch - but we've all become good friends here - so grow thick skin and join in - before long you will feel right at home. Most of us have known each other for a couple years in one way or another - and when we ask for C&C - we know people are going to shoot straight and not hold back. While it may seem harsh at first - it is always with the best intentions and we all learn from our mistakes. Before you know it, you'll see poorly done images with a lot of potential posted here and feel good about sharing what you've learned.

The first thing though would be to post something about yourself, how long have you been shooting, have you had any training or school in photography, what your equipment is - and so on.

So once again - welcome to the thread and feel free to interact. Until you tell us something about yourself - we won't know how to interact with you. We're people here - this is a personal place - so to get the most/best out of this place - make yourself a person and feel right at home.

With that said...
The image from yesterday sorta made me think the kid had urinated in the pond - so i didn't know what to make of it. Why was it yellow around him only?

these four...
#1 - wow - what nice background blur - what lens and aperture were you using?
#2 - is a great study in depth of field!
#3 - makes me think of the movie "Footloose" and the song by the same name.
#4 - Striking - just striking!!!

JBear
Thank you for the kind response

I'm a 26 year old guy who moved to Atlanta a year ago.
My first SLr was a digital rebel which I bought in 2003, I replaced it in May with a Canon XSI and went on a lens rampage
so I currently have:

Canon 70-200L F 2.8 Non-IS USM
Canon 100 2.8 Macro
Canon 50mm 1.8
Canon EF-S 18-55 IS
Canon 17-40L
Canon 2x Extender II
Bogen Manfrotto Tripod and quick release grip ball head.

All shots that you see there are shot with the Canon 70-200L. The first two are at 2.8 aperature, the rest I will have to get you the info!
I am definitely interested in hearing critique so that I can improve.

I love my 70-200 2.8 - it stays on the camera more than any other lens - with the possible exception of the 24-70. Between those two, a 1.4 and the 100-400 my reach goes from 24 to 400 + the 1.4. That lightens the load considerably when packing things around and for most things works very well.

As much as I love primes - I hate sensor dirt - so when i can - i use a zoom - its just not worth the little bit of difference in the blur factor to have to either clean my sensors or send the camera in. (I only clean my 10D and 20D... i let Canon deal with the Mark III)

I say it all the time - clients usually don't know the difference and don't care. Artists know the difference and don't care what anyone else thinks - and I don't care what artists think... so I'm happy.

#1 is very cool. Just looks a little flat to me. Could use some "pop" in post.

#2 is a great idea. Suffers from the same flatness. Would have loved to see the little guys face.

#3 another great idea. Cutting off the feet bug me for some reason. Nice shot otherwise. Also a little flat.

#4 is excellent. Nice timing, focus and framing. Would like to see the sky a little darker.

Hey JonU -i may be able to show up tonight - wanna give specific instructions on how to get there - what i need to bring - what the cover charge is and whether to bring a bodyguard?

dang - i forgot all about the 17-40! You shoulda kept it - i wouldn't have missed it for weeks! So its a 17 to 400 spread! Plus a few little primes for good measure.

I appreciate your letting me use your 50 - I'd like to shoot with it under different lighting conditions and at different apertures some time -cause I know my limited skill set just couldn't get the best out of it on first blush.

Oh yeah....

APG meeting tonight. It is the Altanta Photography Guild. They hang out on flickr. They meet every other Tuesday night at Ellioit Street Pub. They usually have 2 - 6 models and it is $10 to shoot all you want. I will be taking the mkIII, all 3 lens and a small softbox/580 EX II set up. Later in the evening they usually set up a couple light set ups for people to use.

Check it out!!!
