J W says he is going to make me use his 1DsMark III and the 800 at Oshkosh - plus anything else he has at his disposal. Its going to be a fun week!
The bird is a Great Blue Heron and there were two flying together that night. I think they are beautiful.
The last one posted was just a quick grab for example of the technique - not at all one of my favs. But it shows 1) leaving the shutter open at a 7.0 ƒstop, 13/10 shutter and 200 ISO. 2) Off camera flash at low setting to light the subjects having fun and 3) wiggling the camera to make squiggles at the top. Think - click, wiggle, flash, release. ...or click, flash, wiggle, release. - sounds sorta perverted - but it works!

Oh yeah - the squiggles are icicles hanging from the gutter of the house - even in Oahu, they like to celebrate Mele Kalikimaka even though there isn't any snow.

Ahhh...that makes sense. I didn't think of the wiggle wiggle.

The more I look at the Heron the more I like it. Reminds me of a Storch aircraft. It is beautiful in an ugly sort of way. http://www.storchaircraft.com/

I haven't been to Oshkosh since the 80's. I have only been once and it was amazing. Of course the night before I was playing basket ball with my son and threw my back out. Took a lot of meds to be able to walk that place and look up all day. If you love planes that is the place to be.

I think it will be very, very dangerous to play with a 800 mm and a 1DSMKIII. Man I can't imagine having 21 meg to play with. Can you imagine the stoarge requirements?

Wow....should be a fun time all around.

Jon

Just traded for a 50L...it is on it's way.

I am getting into prime fever.....35L, 50L and 135L. I want the 85L so bad...but there are issues with it and the 40D....looks like a 5D is in my future....unless of course the MKIII is all fixed. I think that is still one sweet ride....

I've heard nothing but good things from the new Mark IIIs - most say they are fixed. In fact I've seen some tack sharp incredible shots from them over on the Mark III thread here and POTN.

That is good to hear JB. Are you talking about the "yellow" dot one? Have any idea what they have done to fix it?

tlong - Looks like the battery gets drained in like 20 shots.....grrrrrrr...

Somebody was asking about my setup, I shoot two cameras off of my Bogen legs with a remote release for each camera. I'll have them dialed into different settings depending on if there is alot of "ground show" vs overhead, or one set exposure for the big volleys, etc.

I shoot manual and vary the apature by gut as the show progresses.

Ugh...I hit 1000 posts and did not even realize it...I spend way too much time here

My neighbor pulled out his little electric RC plane and flew it around the cul-de-sac tonight. I immediately raced down and grabbed my camera! I knew a few of you were into RC's, so I thought I would share. Chuck and I used to have a gas one, but it was hard to go to the flying field with the kids when they were babies, so we let it go. Chuck is hoping at least one of them will try it with him when they get older...

5. He wanted me to try to get one with the airplane hovering and him in the BG...I just wish the BG had not been so cluttered...

Hey Marc...I'd like to see a pic of that dual head if you have one handy!

JonU: But of course

When I first looked into this, I think the Bogen assembly of parts from B&H was about $200.

This year I improved on the v1.0 design just slightly- total investment $14. It works with the RRS plates and quick-release clamps I already own. That isn't a requirement, this setup will work with any 1/4-20 threaded equipment (which is most everything).

If I get the chance tomorrow I'll take a picture of it.

Tracey - great plane shots. I'm with you - 6 and 7 are my favorites. I love the plane against the sky.

Marc - heck of a tripod setup there. How does the clamp that holds the camera to that bar handle the weight of lenses?

Colin- Those clamps have teeth and a set screw on each side, the 20d has a 24-70L hanging on it. Just crank down the set screws and its not going anywhere. Now I wouldn't just throw the tripod over my shoulder and go for a jog with the cameras up there, but I used this setup 5 or 6 times last year with no issues.

Marc, are you shooting stereo vision shots with that rig? Help me understand what you are doing - what you are trying to achieve. I'm at a total loss. (familiar territory, i know... "what does this button do") How does shooting two cameras pointed in the same direction get different results unless you have one set up to shoot in a different color space or pre set distance.

--- anyone going to this portrait seminar next week? $98 bucks and you may or may not learn anything. Think I'll go - just cause i don't like to work on Fridays.

technolust? what is that? I figure you dark side shooters would be too busy figuring out which pixels are working and how to make it focus in the dark...

Just kidding - those airplane shots are great!

Well in his case he would have the MKIIn and Canon 20D? 30D? So right off the bat you have 1.3 crop and 1.6 crop. Then if you slap a 16-35 on one camera and a 24-70 (zoomed in to 70) you have different shots of the same action. You could also have them set up with different zooms to catch different parts of the same action. Hence....no switching out of lens on one tripod mounted camera.

That is how I see it any way....
