Amit,
I was there all day on the 22nd and the 23rd. I was alone in an older, green Dodge Grand Caravan. I shot out my window on a beanbag most of the time. I think I saw you and your friends.
I saw one GGO on Lake Nichols Road, one on Admiral on the 22nd. Middle of the afternoon on the 23rd I saw one on McDavitt. Only one other photographer came up after I found that bird. I did alert some others after the owl flew into the woods that it may come back out to hunt some more. I got some great shots and needed to head back down to the Twin Cities to pick up my family....Show more →
Ah! I remember noticing your car when photographing a Northern Hawk Owl on McDavitt, I think. Looking forward to the posting of the shots you got.

Brilliant Amit.
Loved all of them. The first one could use a bigger frame, though.
Thanks for the comment and the suggestion. I was debating between putting the right eye according to the rule of thirds and keeping it tighter to show the penetrating eyes, and finally chose the latter.

Thanks, Jim..The owl has found another fan in me too..
Lovely set Amit... when where you there?
The bog was hopping with owls two weeks ago! It was the best great gray photography that I have experienced in years.

Really beautiful portraits of the GGO, Amit--love that third one especially! Well worth your trip (?) and certainly mine to look at these.
I've read horror stories about baiting up there. I'd be curious to hear if you observed that on your visit.
Thanks for posting.

Appreciate the kind words, Kim. It was totally worth getting up at 3:00am and making the 3 hour trip from Minneapolis.
I did not see any baiting. In fact, we were spending a lot of time waiting for the owls to hunt. I was hoping for some of those pictures. But there were only 2 instances in which any of the owls actually hunted that day. And I missed out on both because I was too slow.

Thanks, Bruce. I was there last Saturday 12/23. Did the early morning (4am) drive from the Twin Cities.
I was seeing all those fantastic pictures from folks who had gone there 2 weeks ago on Facebook Sax-Zim Bog page. And every other person I met in the Twin Cities who was also a birder was showing me his or her awesome pictures from their visit. It was driving me crazy that I could not go because all my weekends were busy until end of the year.
