p.1 #1 · 5Ds 5dsR - Reality in use?

These bodies have been out for some time now. Those who have shot them - downside of the cameras? Any problems the seem to reoccur?

Looking at the possiblity of getting a used body now that prices are dropping. Can live with 6400 as the high ISO setting. Most use would be tripod mounted, maybe some on a monopod.

How is the body for night skies compared to the 6D? Anyone have a direct comparison or experience there?

Is there an actual advantage to the sR over the s - that careful shooting and sharpening in post processing can't equalize or overcome?

Thanks in advance for any information.

In my opinion, based on extensive use of the 5sR since it was released, along with test printing files from 5Ds and 5DsR...

1. I can't offer a direct comparison of night sky photography between the two, but I use the 5DsR extensively for night photography. Most of what I do with it is long-exposure, tripod-based work with exposures in the 15 second to 20 minute range, and it is excellent for this work.

2. From testing files from both cameras, I have come to some conclusions about the 5Ds versus 5DsR question.

- Both produce excellent high resolution images. Any differences are incredibly small in final photographs and are essentially insignificant.

- There are potential pluses and minuses to each, though their significance is often overstated in photography forum discussions. It is true that AA filtering can reduce the visibility of aliasing artifacts in marginal situations — but AA filtering doesn't fully resolve those rare problems either. (I used to see the effects from older cameras that had AA filtering enabled.) It is also true that eliminating AA filtering has the potential to reduce some image softening at capture — but this is extremely minor and post-processing the AA filtered and non-AA filtered files in ways appropriate for each diminishes the difference to the point of insignificance.

- Also on the AA filtering subject, it is clear that manufacturers of high resolution digital sensor cameras are essentially unanimously moving away from AA filtering — see cameras from Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Sony, and from various miniMF systems.

I chose to get the 5DsR and I would do the same again.

Considering I have no experience with night shooting or a 6D,(I can't address those issues) I have been mostly pleased by the excellent quality of many of the 5DsR's photos. If mounted to a tripod one can get excellent detail and the cropping ability allows (theoretical) lens focal length increases.

For me the limit of 6400 ISO isn't a deal breaker, but I shoot wildlife with natural light and occasionally need higher.

I have been spoiled by the autofocus of the 5DIV, which is much better.

I got a 5DS a few weeks ago. Its resolution is incredible. If you're upgrading from using 6D for landscapes (as I was), then the distinction between 5DS and 5DS R is moot; it really doesn't matter.

Recently, a friend of mine showed me his 5DS/5DS R comparison images (same lens, same subject, same time); in some parts of the image, one looked slightly sharper, as did the other one, in other parts of 'the same' image. Regardless, I had decided to go for a 5DS R, because the experience of other shooters shows that aliasing problems are rare with either version; and so, why not go for the highest-possible resolution (i.e. the R)? I'll tell you why not, it's because I found a great deal on a new 5DS, for half price.

Like you, I was waiting for the price of the camera to drop (new and used), before jumping in. The deal that found me, made the decision easy. I suggest you set a price that you're prepared to pay (and item condition, for used), and buy the first one that meets price, S or R.

As said above, either flavor of 5Ds file is virtually indistinguishable from the other, so minor as to be irrelevant. Never used a 6D, though heard it's good for astro.

File size is one aspect that can be an issue, both for storage (cheap solutions) and processing (not-so-cheap solutions). Shooting mRAW can be an option, but there may be some limitations to that file format, and I've never used it. Related to file size is the camera's speed in showing previews on the LCD screen, but I can live with that.

Coming from a 5DIII, I'm thrilled with all aspects of the 5Ds file, and would never, ever go back. Sounds like the 5DIV is a great file, but I'm not in the market for an all-around camera, though I'd have one if money grew on trees.

One of my main 'personal' subjects with the 5Ds is astrophotography, and I wouldn't trade its resolution for marginally better ISO. Although I do hope the 5Ds II has better dynamic range and high ISO noise characteristics (won't happen for a 'studio' camera), I'm not holding my breath for Canon to ever adopt Nikon's approach of trying to be innovative with camera features and dynamic with sensor design. As long as they design/manufacture their own sensors, they'll be behind the curve. Thus, I'm focusing on lens speed to mitigate some of that, to the extent possible (Tamron 15-30/2.8 is my workhorse astro lens).

Apparently Canon finally upgraded the firmware for the 5Ds after years of being essentially on v.1, surprisingly. I haven't upgraded, and it likely won't matter, from what I read.

5Ds is hands-down the best camera I've used for 75% of what I shoot (other 25% is a 1Dx for sports), although I do lust after a Canon-version of the D850. So many features of that camera that would be useful to me.

Dan, did you ever compare the overall color of files from both cameras? I’ve read reports that the 5Ds has marginally better color than the R but have never seen proof. I’m wondering if the added filter that cancels out the AA filter has any effect on the color output. I only ask because I have had two 5DsRs (one gray market, one refurbished), and the color always seemed less vivid to me than the original 5D or the Mark IV, regardless of the Lightroom profile or adjustments I made to the files.

I used to shoot with the 6D and upgraded to 5dsR 15 months ago.

The 5dsR is a wonderful all around camera and almost everywhere better than the 6D.

What counts in real world is in my opinion

(i) huge capacity to crop with 50 mpx available
(ii) better autofocus for 5dSR
(iii) overall better image quality from 5dsR; the level of details is breathtaking
(iv) higher pc demand to process 5dsR 70 mb raw file. Here most people underestimate the difference; I had to upgrade my laptop as smooth processing in LR of 6d files became a pain with the 50 MPx files
(v) 5dsr is limited to ISO 6400

My experience suggests other slight differences but nothing I would consider really key in real world:
- 5dsr has better DR at low ISO
- 6D has better noise at high ISO and tolerate better a very long exposure (>3 min)
- better colours and skin tones from 5dsR, also due to better color profiles for jpg
- the integrated 6d wifi is better than 5dsr's additional wifi module
- 6d can has interchangeable viewfinders
- 5dsr's resolution is more prone to show motion blur

Sorry I cannot help vs. 5DS.

I have never used the 5ds - I bought the 5dsr after reading about and examining comparisons and concluding that the 5dsr has a small advantage on resolution but a small disadvantage on moire. However I have not tested to substantiate. Many say that if you sharpen 5ds more its equal to 5dsr. I say - I can sharpen the 5dsr more too

Anyway I agree with the above - they are very close and I would buy based on whether I took lots of product type shots (moire risk) or not (then 5dsr).

Since I bought my 5dsr I have stopped using my 7dii ( I can get more resolution of big animals with 5dsr cropped - tested it), stopped using my 5diii (if I get a great picture I want to be able to print big and if its a stretch picture, I want to crop big).

The only downside of 5dsr for me is - the files are so big that if you take a burst, the histogram is slow to show. This means you are shooting blind on exposure when you shoot animals shots. The histogram can take a long time and the animal does something interesting within 2 seconds and you burst again (and again) and you continue to shoot blind on exposure feedback.

I have not notice dramatic difference at high ISO vs 5diii. And I have not notice a difference in iq at high iso. They must be there because others talk about it but I am suspicious that the iso markings vary from actual ISO by body enough to make such comparisons suspect. eg 5dsr might be truer to the actual iso.

[Okay 2nd downside is that opening a tiff, will seem like a long process after dealing with 22mpx files.]

Congrats Jim!

I bought a used 5DsR around a year ago. Having read many studies, I see it is slightly higher resolution over the 5Ds. But the difference is really nothing, especially compared to a 5D3 or 6D. If I were doing it again, I would do just as you did -- look for the best deal on either version of the 5Ds/R. Great camera!

I did not compare for color. However, a couple of thoughts on that topic.

First, it is my opinion that the stuff about "colors" from different cameras and sensors is overdone. Yes, there are differences among cameras, but they are quite small and typically can be accommodated in post. And they cut both ways — the fact that there is a difference between two things does not always mean that one is better than the other. Sometimes a difference is just a difference.

Second, and speculating here, given that both the 5DsR and the 5Ds actually have the same layers in the sensor (simply oriented differently so that the AA filtering is cancelled in the 5DsR) it is hard to imagine where any significant color difference between the two would be produced.

Third, it is possible that color has been toned down (in newer cameras such as the 5DsR or 5Ds) since the earlier cameras like the 5D. It is also quite possible (actually almost certain) that different raw conversion settings are idea for different cameras, and with those settings enabled it is possible to get essentially equivalent final output.

Finally, I don't have any problem at all getting exactly the color output I want from the 5DsR.

On another note, the 5DsR is a primary reason that I have not moved to one of the miniMF cameras from Pentax or Fujifilm for my landscape photography. Among the reasons is that the output quality is so good from those 50MP full frame cameras that improvements over their performance by going to the somewhat larger 33mm x 44mm sensor don't seem significant enough to justify the cost of the cameras or lenses. I'm confident — I've seen and done comparisons — that even skillful printers/photographers would be very hard pressed to consistently identify the source of a set of high quality 30" x 40" prints that included images from both types of sources.

The 5DsR/5Ds are also just really solid, reliable cameras. I'm not saying that they are the best cameras for all photographers in all circumstances. (I use something else for some of my photography, too.) But if your work aligns with the strengths of these cameras I think they are excellent performers.

How about throwing in the 5IV into the mix. I have shot both and I seem to favor the 5DIV.. Don't get me wrong the 5Ds or sr are no slouches by any means.. As others have mentioned, nice to have that crop ability of the 50 mp for wildlife.

Also if a deal is to hard to say no to is available, definitely pursue. You will not be disappointed. I could be very happy using for landscapes or wildlife.

However Sony is my go to for landscape work.

Yeah, I'm not sure why, but regardless of the Lightroom profile I used, the colors I could get from the 5DsR file never approached the reality I saw in the viewfinder, at least not the way they did with the 5D and 5D MkIV. But I should specify that it was not with every scene that I had the issue, it was mainly high-contrast scenes of clouds over a landscape at sunset. Living near ABQ, NM, the altitude here is about the same as Denver, but we have incredibly dry air and clear skies. These conditions make for extremely-intense colors at sunrise and sunset, and not every camera I have used has been capable of reproducing them. With the 5DsR, I found that the more extreme the contrast of the light source, the harder time it had rendering rich color, and the more neutral a scene would render (for example, sunlight across a snowstorm in Colorado at around 10K feet. I suppose it feels like they sacrificed a bit of color IQ for the sake of extreme resolution, or like you said, maybe they decided on a more sophisticated color palette for the 5Ds. For what it's worth (probably not much), but DXO shows the 5Ds with a slightly better low-light ISO performance and a scant difference in Color Depth – probably not much to make any difference, but it would seem to point toward there being some difference between the two.

Regarding the GFX/MiniMF, I thought you'd find this quote from the GFX Facebook user group interesting. It doesn't change the fact that the 5DsR is meeting your needs, but it might give you some insight into the GFX's performance versus larger MF digital products. If what this person is saying is true, it would negate the need to differentiate between a MiniMF and larger MF digital – at least as far the end results go.

If you already have a 6D, i'd hold on to it for astro and as a backup, and get the 5Dx of your choice for landscape. If you don't have a 6d and are a budding astro shooter, consider looking for a deal on a new or used one. I've never been completely satisfied with the night sky shots out of the 5Dsr compared to the 6D, but that is probably a reflection of my technique or PP. The 6D images show much less noise and are easier to PP massage into a nice image.

In a nutshell from my experience, the 5DSR it is very satisfying to use, being a vast improvement in AF speed, tracking etc over the 6D when shooting, and a huge resolution jump when reviewing images.

Personally, I did not enjoy the jump up in size as I did get used to the 6D being one of the smaller FF DSLRs, but the difference is not huge and you get used to it.

The biggest letdown is file size and file handling in general. The camera does seem slower to read and write files to the cards, and you will be hogging your HDDs too when cold storing and even worse when using PS to PP them with layers: those PSD files will be BIG, often stupendously so.

For the in-camera performance, mainly for reducing the time it takes from taking a shot to reviewing it, I have found that it does help using 2 cards. In the beginning, I told myself that I would use only the SD cards I already had and not double dip with CFs. I had 4x 64GB cards, which were "more than enough" for the 6D and still plenty for the 5DSR.

And I kept my promise - for the most part - I've only gotten one 64GB CF, just to try this tip out, and it worked: using 2x cards, set them up for one to store only RAW and the other whichever JPEG size you prefer. I typically go RAW in the CF that has faster writing (~85MB/sec, Sandisk Extreme) + S JPEG in the SD (~60-65MB/sec) with the 50MP camera. Then I set the camera to preview from the card that I store the smaller JPEG file to. This reduces the time it takes to review images after a short burst notably in my experience. There are faster CFs than the 120R/85W Sandisk Extreme I got, but I did not want to drop that kind of $ for something that I don't know whether will be usable in the next body I will get - even though it costs a fraction of what my 1st 1GB CF did back in 2004...

I upgraded to the 5DsR from a 5D3 around March 2016 specifically for a trip to the Canadian Rockies in June of that year. I'm so glad I did, the IQ of the 5DsR was vaslty better than the 5D3 and not just the resolution of course, but also the sensor had shown real improvements in DR, with no banding n the shadows and easily a full stop of shadow DR, probably closer to 1.5 stops. Apart from this the 5DsR seemed to have superior AF, possibly due to having dual digic processors and eve in LV the AF was more snappy, despite not having DPAF. At high ISO the noise was no worse when equalised and shows more detail, the 5DsR also had several improvements from the 1DX like full EC in M mode when using auto ISO, ability to set minimum shutter speed in Av mode based on FL and added intervalometer. The only real let downs, the video has been gimped even further from the 5D3, the buffer is small and screen previews have a bit of lag. Small nits. On my trip to Canada not only was it my landscape camera, I used it more than the 1DX for wildlife and birding. Having nearly 3x the pixels to play with allows huge cropping and still a bag of detail, it's effectiviely a 1.7x TC compared to 1DX.

I really want to see Canon man up and make the 5DsII a feature rich camera that can easily take on the D850 and A7R3 in all aspects of shooting. With it's rumored 60MP, if this can shoot 8fps, get 1DXII or better AF, much bigger buffer, feature rich 4K I will sell 5D4 and 1DX in a heartbeat.

D850 pumps ~320 MP/sec at 45.7 MP * 7 FPS, that is 12.5% faster than the 1DX II that did 14*20 = ~ 280 MP/sec, which in turn gave roughly 11% more than the 5DSR which was around 250 MP/sec. This seems to be the ballpark of what a couple of years of imaging processing innovation allows for.

A 60MP @ 8 FPS camera would need roughly a 480 MP/sec through-output, easily double that of the 1DX II and ,more than 33% faster than the D850 image processing power. I don't think Canon will be capable of that - unless there is a high-speed full-sensor / half pixel readout magic going on - which at 30MP would still be great AFAIK. The Sony A9 can do ~480 MP/sec, so it is "doable", but I don't know if the DIGIC line of processors can scale that high, that soon.

I think a 60MP @ 6~6.5 FPS would be a more manageable and realistic load for the progress 2-3 years allow for.
And of course I would think the battery life at full tilt of such a monster would be pretty limiting: doubt you can pump 300+ MP/sec on a LC-E6 / 13.5Wh class battery for a prolonged time.
There is a reason the 1D class has a >30Wh battery...and those A7 cameras are severely crippled for prolonged shooting with a 7.7Wh NP-FW50...

A bit off subject, but I have a hard time getting too worried about the high MP images. Pixel density is about the same as old 12mp m4/3, and less than the newer ones. About the same as 20mp on aps.

The large files are a concern, but a 4TB drive seemed to be about the same as my 200gb drive using my old Rebel XT in jpeg.

I'd probably want a new computer to process, but if you already have a good monitor, etc, a new tower might not be bad. If adding RAM isn't enough. Adding RAM really sped up my old machine I run the 3800 off of, as far as how long it took to start printing.
