In my opinion, based on extensive use of the 5sR since it was released, along with test printing files from 5Ds and 5DsR...
1. I can't offer a direct comparison of night sky photography between the two, but I use the 5DsR extensively for night photography. Most of what I do with it is long-exposure, tripod-based work with exposures in the 15 second to 20 minute range, and it is excellent for this work.
2. From testing files from both cameras, I have come to some conclusions about the 5Ds versus 5DsR question.
- Both produce excellent high resolution images. Any differences are incredibly small in final photographs and are essentially insignificant.
- There are potential pluses and minuses to each, though their significance is often overstated in photography forum discussions. It is true that AA filtering can reduce the visibility of aliasing artifacts in marginal situations — by AA filtering doesn't fully resolve those rare problems either. (I used to see the effects from older cameras that had AA filtering enabled.) It is also true that eliminating AA filtering has the potential to reduce some image softening at capture — but this is extremely minor and post-processing the AA filtered and non-AA filtered files in ways appropriate for each diminishes the difference to the point of insignificance.
- Also on the AA filtering subject, it is clear that manufacturers of high resolution digital sensor cameras are essentially unanimously moving away from AA filtering — see cameras from Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Sony, and from various miniMF systems.
I chose to get the 5DsR and I would do the same again.
