Great photos as always, John! But I still can't get past those funky bokeh balls... haha.
Thank you!
Haha! I totally get it. I used to get hung up on cat-eye issues myself, but eventually just started to roll with it since some of my favorite lenses/images that come out of them have less than stellar bokeh.
For me, the weird shape is actually somewhat interesting. But again, this is coming from the guy who went out of his way to get a legacy lens with a 2-bladed aperture because square bokeh.....lol. I may not be the best judge.

That's a lens with character right there!
man, you don't know how many times i put the lens back to the box and about to ship it back...i got the return label printed out ready...Now, it past the return window..SOOOO...i guess the "love" part beats the "hate" part for now. : D
John, in the last set, the first three images, how much have you increased contrast and pulled the black point to compensate for veiling flare from the backlight? Whatever the case, it looks good.
I'm really waffling on this lens, as I like what I'm seeing and some of its character 'flair,' but will I really use it much? I suppose only I can answer that. But between a 50 Lux ASPH, Zeiss Opton Sonnar 50/1.5, Zeiss ZM Planar 50/2, Contax G 45/2, Canon LTM 50/1.4 and Nikkor LTM 50/1.4... I don't know. It might supplant the two Sonnars, though they're quite a lot more compact in comparison. I mostly use the 50 Lux ASPH...
I see Amazon US will ship this to Canada customs prepaid. Very tempting.

I think you should just buy it Ron. It seems like ages since you bought a lens.

Not much at all with regard to pulling blacks and/or bumping contrast.
Thanks John! YOLO is what got me into Leica M, 'just to try' haha... now tens of thousands later...

You're right Gary... but the kit has felt pretty complete. Not really feeling anything is missing, though there's always a soft spot for character lenses.
I’m interested in how this lens compares to the Zeiss 50/1.5 Sonnar ZM at equivalent apertures (1.4/1.5) as I’ve been eyeing the Sonnar for its signature character. It wasn’t until I saw this thread that maybe I should consider this lens instead considering its friendlier price point. Even though both lenses are M mount and I have a few M bodies, they would be used on my monochrome converted A7RII and regular A7RIII.
Any thoughts or recommendations on one or the other?
Hi, I am using Jupiter-3 50mm f/1.5 (sonnar clone) and Canon 50/0.95, among others on the A7rII(m) and they do fabulously well! On Bayer senosred cams, they are not that great.
BTW, the 7artisans is a classic Sonnar clone!

Hi Vivek!
How’s your A7rii(m) treating you? I need more time to shoot with mine, but I do love the results I get with it! Definitely considering a classic character lens on the A7rii(m), which is why my initial interest was with the Zeiss 50 Sonnar...and now this lens. I see you have the Jupiter-3 50/1.5 and Canon 50/.95. Are you keeping an eye on this 7artisans lens too? For the price, I might just as well buy one to try out. Cheaper than a new ZM! I don’t have the TAP AF adapter, but I’m use to MF lenses anyways.
Hmm, might just put my Amazon order in later today. If I don’t gel with the lens, then I can always return it. I hope it puts my Zeiss GAS at ease (for a little while).
Well, GAS struck again and even before my 7artisans 50/1.1 was delivered today. I blame the Batis 135mm f/2.8 APO on sale for $1,499!! thread because that prompted me to download the Greentoe App, which then encouraged *cough* me to score a deal on the Zeiss 50/1.5 Sonnar ZM.
So the 7artisans will be waiting for me when I get home and the 50/1.5 ZM will be delivered sometime next week.
I guess now I can answer my original question regarding the 7aritsans 50mm vs the Zeiss 50/1.5 ZM.
I swear...I need to stop reading some of these threads. I need some Beano. I can't afford another GAS attack.
Sounds like you had a good day! :
May I ask how much you paid for the ZM50?

Nuno, I paid $1100 flat (no tax & shipping included) for the 50/1.5 ZM. I'm sure I could have bought it cheaper used, but I was looking to purchase it new. I saved $161 off of retail (not including in state sales tax if I were to buy it locally), but I don't recall ever seeing this lens go on sale, so I'm happy.

Congrats. I'll be interested in your thoughts comparing the two.

Thanks!
I should, hopefully, have some time with the 7artisans tomorrow. I'll play with it at wide open up to f/2.8. I don't foresee using this lens stopped down any further than that.
Looks like the Zeiss 50/1.5 Sonnar was shipped today. I really want to play with that lens next weekend too. My work schedule doesn't allow me time to shoot during the week, so my thoughts and sample photos may have a bit of a time gap between them.
If all goes well, then a TAP might be in my near future...HA!
My initial thoughts, beyond the build quality being exceptional are that I think this lens falls into the same category as the Lens Babies, its the sort of lens you use to be creative, when you want some sun flare, softness around the edge, that sort of thing. Definitely not a lens to shoot wider than about f2.8, it just doesn't get sharp on the edges, but for wider apertures and documentary type photography, it might actually be quite a useful lens in its own right. My verdict is still out on it, but its definitely a more artistic type lens, could be fun for taking shots of the kids as @JohnDizzo15 has demonstrated. This is from the M, might try it on the Sony tonight with the TAP adapter...
