Well that's interesting. I had no idea there was already a clear plastic film on there. However, that film is clearly held on with way more adhesive than your average screen protector - and if you're not careful, removing it could warp or damage the screen. I wonder if this is considered user replaceable without impacting warranty?

yes, because its not meant to be taken off... its not a screen protector is part of the design... and i'm pretty sure Sony will void warranty if they find that you did that.

Laptops, tablets have the samething and when it comes off its called delamination., its not a screen protector, its part of the screen design.

It's not glass, it's just an adhesive plastic film. Putting another piece of plastic film on top of the original one makes about as much sense as stacking two skylight/UV "protection" filters on the front of your lenses...

Here's a good YouTube video explaining how to replace it (and apparently, this is all the Sony service centre does, for only $300...)

Pretty cool. Thanks for sharing the video.

I think it is perfectly usable, definately better than the flimsy one we had in earlier models. Obviously this depends on the user, but I cannot think of accidentally changing the values via the control wheel.

I configured WB selection into it, the choices are Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, WB, Creative Style and Picture Effect. The only complaint I have is that the I cannot access "submenus" (customize the custom WB entries) via this interface.

Great news! If I use it for ISO (I take it directly starts scrolling?) that means not only is changing between ISOs better (I only use 100, 640 and sometimes Auto, I wish we could edit the list!) it also frees up the right press button that I currently use!

One more questions: is there any context sensitivity to the assignment of the press button on the joystick? So if I set it to magnify (which only happens or makes sense in MF mode) can I make it do eye AF in AF mode

(thinks: isn't there a capacity to AF in magnification now? IN which case surely the answer to my question is NO.)
So control dial centre button for eyeAF then...

Just throw the camera away when the screen gets too messed up, I suppose...

FYI- Apple is replacing the laptops with that problem. 13-15 model years I believe.

Maybe time for a class action lawsuit to get Sony to do likewise?

How abuse do you have to be to get your screen like that...

I had many cameras and I never seen that happen.

I baby my a7rii and my screen ended up looking even worse than the one in that video within a few months of purchase, and it really reduced the whole experience having to try to look through the crappy screen. I've recently peeled that super thin plastic layer off and replaced it with a Larmor glass protector. I never had similar issues with any other cameras or laptops.

It may not be an issue that happens in all cases. I'm no engineer, but I am pretty sure that the crappy little plastic layer stuck on with glue was decreasing the quality of my screen, and I really don't see how it is some integral aspect and feature that isn't just a factory applied plastic screen protector.

That is the glass I use for my A7RII. The recent cover I got has nicely smoothed edges, different from past protectors i got from them also the surface of the glass seems to have improved.

Delamination of the stock screen protectoe is pretty normal with Sony bodies. Skin oils and what not screwing up the screen. A screen protector is a necessity IMO

can someone confirm this:

"With SSM or SAM lenses only. With the LA-EA3 mount adapter. Focal-plane phase-detection AF not supported for movie recording. AF-C can only be used when the "Phase detection" AF system is selected, but focus is fixed at the first frame during continuous shooting in any mode other than "Continuous: Lo" (Hi+, Hi, Mid)."

straight from sony's site, on the full specs page, note 20 and 21.

Does this mean that AF-C with adapted is only limited to 3 fps? Same documentation with eye AF.

this sounds like a possible step backwards from the A7rii?

I'm leaning towards changing the control wheel to ISO too to get an extra button as you mentioned and since I'm a bit unhappy about not being able to suboptions via this interface.

You abuse it by holding it up to your face to take photos through the EVF, it's happened on all my Sonys. If it's skin oils causing the problem then it will naturally effect some people more than others!

Walked in to my local sony kiosk and got my a7r3 today. also got the vg-c3em grip which for me, transforms the camera up another level. I've only had a play at home with as i'm busy editing a big job, but everything (start-up, focus, buffer clearing) is faster and my adapted canon lenses work brilliantly.

I had been thinking of getting the 24-70 f2.8 gm (AUD$2890 locally) but managed to get the canon 24-70 f2.8 mk2 for AUD$1925 (normally $2450) on the black friday sales.
I'm really looking forward to setting it up properly and shooting with it this weekend.

I can't see anyway to configure it as you suggest, the only contexts availble for button assignment are stills/video/playback.

DavidBM wrote:

Yes you can now activate magnification regardless of focus mode and AF whilst magnified which is both very satisfying to watch, and useful for very precise focusing.

The only thing that has some context sensitivity is when "Focus Standard" is programmed to a button, but even that is quite unimpressive as it either moves focus point to center, engages Center Lock-on AF or focuses on center point

http://helpguide.sony.net/ilc/1710/v1/en/contents/TP0001211779.html

And yes, AF during focus magnification is super-awesome, talk about blood vessel surgery level of focus point placement.
