I got lost a little here.
Matt can you configure the press Joystick to focus magnify. I know from the A9 it will magnify either manual or AFS. Mode but I had it on C1. Can we make it press Joystick in
I mage AEL button into Eye -AF and Af on for normal AF. Very nice to go back and forth between them.

One more questions: is there any context sensitivity to the assignment of the press button on the joystick? So if I set it to magnify (which only happens or makes sense in MF mode) can I make it do eye AF in AF mode
(thinks: isn't there a capacity to AF in magnification now? IN which case surely the answer to my question is NO.)
So control dial centre button for eyeAF then...

I can't see anyway to configure it as you suggest, the only contexts availble for button assignment are stills/video/playback.
Yes you can now activate magnification regardless of focus mode and AF whilst magnified which is both very satisfying to watch, and useful for very precise focusing.
That's how I have it.
Could you get round this by creating a group of settings in memory for MF and a group for AF, where the same button has the different function you're looking for? I find this frustrating on the A7R2 where I have a button set up for focal length for dumb MF lenses and it has no usable function for any AF lens, or MF lens which talks to the camera (eg my Canon TSE lenses). If I could toggle between 2 selection sets I'd be happier.

Mike there is recall but I never tried it where the same button can do diffrent things. We have to look into this but I agree when a AF lens or manual lens gets locked out on certain operations

Agree and Im not playing that game and risking screwing up the whole assembly. I see no ill effect of added a glass cover or even a plastic one. I take it off after I'm done with the camera and ready to sell its in its original state.
Hi Guy, Since this was an issue with my Sony A7R2 when I recently sent it to Sony Pro Service, I thought I would share what they told me in an email. They did replace the screen cover at no charge as a one time accommodation.
Here is what Sony Pro Tech told me in the email:
"We place a screen protector that over time with wear and tear the protective screen come up. You can peel this layer off and place another screen protector on."
So hopefully that settles the question, although the video that was posted really made it look like a dangerous operation!
Now back to waiting impatiently for my R3...........................

Sounds good Steve. I at least like that response.
We I feel have to be a little careful for at least new users to Sony , just don’t want to mislead them. I think even if you put one on it does not have any ill visual effects.

You abuse it by holding it up to your face to take photos through the EVF, it's happened on all my Sonys. If it's skin oils causing the problem then it will naturally effect some people more than others!
all my cameras had tempered glass put in the screen the second they come out of a box, never had any issues.

If two protectors is good, would having three installed not be better?
FWIW, cleaning your sensor yourself on an IBIS-equipped camera likely voids your warranty as well, so I guess Sony users are supposed to wait until both sides of the camera are obscured by crud, and then send it to Sony for cleaning and screen protector replacement?
Anyway, I've derailed the original topic too much already... but maybe if Fred has some spare time, he could move the pertinent posts on LCD protectors to a new thread?

So not installing a third party screen protector is abuse
when you buy a new car and you don't use put wax, and later down the road your paint gets damaged, is it cars manufactures fault?
when you buy a leather couch and you don't use leather conditioner and later down the road it starts cracking, is it cough manufactures fault?
when you build a fence, and never paint it or seal it, and later down the road the wood starts rotting, is it the wood mills fault?

Since when does cleaning the sensor yourself on the A7RII void the warranty?

If this were true, there wouldn't be cleaning mode that turns off ibis and locks the sensor in place.

That's great information I wasn't aware of. It looks like our new cameras don't really need a protective screen. Once the 'factory' protector gets scratched or wears out, we can simply remove it and apply a new one.
Still, it doesn't hurt to apply a screen protection as soon as we get a new camera and forget about it.

Here’s a post that ties the theme of this thread to screen protection
I’m travelling on Saturday to LA and then onwards to South America for a month. As a result of my travel, the logistics related to acquiring the A7RIII before I travel has been a bit of logistics juggling. I had a pre-order at B&H originally but cancelled that as I deemed it too high risk to arrive on time. Then I got on the list at Sammy’s in LA and also on the list at The Camera Store in Calgary (one of the bigger etailers in Canada that offers overnight shipping). Both of those sounded positive until yesterday when they were starting to have doubts about the quantity and ETA of the shipments from Sony. So I emailed the smallest Sony camera shop here in Vancouver yesterday and they confirmed I could pick up a camera on Thursday. . While I say they are small, they are more of a video shop than a camera store and they also happen to be the local Sony camera service center. So don’t be afraid to call around and see if smaller retailers might have some stock.
So what’s the connection with screen protectors? I’m going to ask the service manager about this whole business when I pick up the camera on Thursday.

I agree and it’s nuch easier to take the one we put in off if it gets scratched up. I think it’s safer and when you go to sell it , your giving your buyer the original Sony setup.

I’d feel a whole lot better if Amazon just charged my credit card today. At least I have a guarantee
