My unit was shipped today.

And as I'm upgrading from an A7R the improvements are most certainly worth it. Can't wait to have a camera with reliable Eye-AF.

Well it's arrived right on schedule. Battery was empty so just waiting for it to charge.

If anyone has any specific tests they'd like done on the camera let me know and I'll see what I can accommodate.

If you have any adapted lenses could you check whether there is any improvement with focusing outside the centre and in low light? Especially with the tele ones.

I'm also in UK but I ordered it just 3 days ago, so I will probably need to wait...

Where can you get one? I had two chargers for my A72 just to keep up! The the new camera, maybe it won't be as much as a problem. Is there a quick charger option? Over two hours is quite a long time.

Well I can say the battery will achieve 20% charge in the time it takes to microwave and eat a katsu chicken curry.

First impressions, printed manual in the box - I appreciate that (didn't get one with the A7R or A7RII). Viewfinder set to high quality is very nice but not a night and day change compared with the A7RII.

I'm already in love with the AF joystick (A9 owners will know this already), just the right balance between control and speed of moving across the frame (you can go side to side in about a second). It instinctively felt like you should be able to return the AF point to the centre by clicking the joystick, so I was very pleased when it did exactly that.

And right on cue the heavens open and it starts raining.

I just tried the pixel shift function and it has written four separate ARW files to the card (without JPEGs), so it appears there is no need to try and extract them from some sort of combined file.

I have the last one you linked to for the smaller batteries in my RII and it works well and couldn’t be any more compact.

Those damn DPreview guys are totally obsessed with how fully automatic AF tracking works (Lock-On mode) but all I want to know how fast and accurate the AF on the A7r3 is if you follow the subject by keeping the active AF point(s) on the subject, old school. Is that really to much to ask?

Yes, this is very different from their usual thing. I think they shouldn’t have given it 90% and gold because its not exactly a high resolution speed demon that 850D is supposed to be.
Landscape lovers may think hard about getting it, but i think being the gearhead that we all are, everyone will get it. 😊
I can’t stop but wonder whether this is exactly the camera a7R2 was supposed to be, and should have been.

like canon and nikon, even Sony has upgrade strategies, who knew

consider the A7r -> R2 jump.... it was one of the biggest jumps in the history of cameras, maybe second to the 5D -> 5Dii.

while the R2 has lost it's flavor, if sony simply gave me adapted eye AF, that would seriously zap most of my lust for the R3. I'm just not very particular in the new features of the R3. I can certainly see the usefulness, and it's a terrific value, however I can wait for a bit of a price drop before acquiring one, and my skip altogether if sony gives up that firmware.

you can already find reviews like this on YT. I forget his channel, but Toby has a sequence using expanded point, and it looked like it tracked a downhill moutain biker just fine with the 10fps.

Congrats! Now get out there and eat some stars! If you have the chance I would love to see a noise/star eating comparison in a shot at ISO3500 for 20s (with A7RIII) compared to the same taken with the A7RII.

I am banking on selling my 11 batteries and 4 chargers (for A7RII) to make a bit of $$.

You are reading too much into it.
I just wanted to say that D850 sounds like a better tracker as well has high resolution. a7R3 has high resolution but not as good tracking (as per dpreviw article). So (it appears that) the D850 is speed + resolution champion. In Sony, speed + resolution has been split into 2 cameras, a9 and the a7R3 where Nikon has combined them in one body.
Having high FPS is not a true marker of a sports camera. It has to has a fitting AF also, like a9 in this case.
a7R3 may have very good AF for all i know but dpreviw wasn’t gushing about it.
Personally, I don’t have a need for D850.

virtualrain wrote:
I find your statements confusing but it could be just me. In your previous post and again in this one, you seem to be saying that the Nikon is the better high-speed high-Mpix camera. The D850 has 46 MPix vs the Sony’s 42 and it does 9fps vs Sony’s 10fps. So both the D850 and A7RIII are pretty much the same. Then if you look at flagship bodies, the A9 currently stands alone at 20fps black-out free with 24Mpix (No Nikon comes close). How are you coming to the conclusion that Nikon dominates in speed+resolution?

With the fully electronic shutter you are definitely getting the full 14 bits in uncompressed mode (I shot an overexposed image and the maximum RAW value was 0011111111111111 as you would expect.

Compressed mode is harder to analyse, as you get a maximum of 13 bits anyway due to the tonecurve in the first stage of compression. An overexposed compressed RAW image contains a maximum value of 16628 which is 0100000011110100. This is technically 15-bit, but only just, and I think that could be due to a rounding problem in the dcraw decompression routines. Also the lowest bit was zero for each pixel, meaning you're effectively getting 13-bits overall. But this does hint that the ADC is done with 14-bit precision with compressed RAW.

This is in single shot mode. I'll test continuous mode next.

I just tested continuous mode and the results were the same: full 14-bit for uncompressed RAW, ~13-bit (basically as many bits as compression allows) for compressed RAW.

This surprised me slightly as I'm sure Sony said that continuous shooting was only 12-bit for compressed RAW.

To double check my methods were accurate I tested bulb mode (using EFCS as you can't shoot bulb with ES), uncompressed RAW. It came out at 12-bit as expected.

So aside from the rolling shutter implications, and a few restrictions (can't use bulb, can't use anti-flickr, can't use bracketing) it seems the ES is much more usable compared to the A7RII, which is good because I use it a lot for certain things.

edit: Actually I made a mistake you can use bracketing with ES, it's uncompressed RAW that can't be used with bracketing

I would love to but unfortunately where I live we have this permanent star-eater called cloud... I'm off to the craft shop to see if I can mock up some fake stars for indoor use (I'm thinking glitter on black card should do the trick).
