Since we are only 3 week away, it would be nice to have access to a series of 4-shot RAWs and use them with the Sony conversion software. It would answer all remaining questions we have.
I might need to hibernate for 3 weeks or I may start twitching. Lol

Cool stuff. Flash sync is 1/13 since the shutter is locked to silent mode so sensor readout is same as A7R II as expected, but at least one can use strobes with the Pixel Shift.
To question my own reasoning: It actually looks like there might be a way to read sensor faster when not using uncompressed RAW. Interesting find in the manual by a dpreview forum member

As someone who shoots baseball and winter sports on occasion, but mostly shoots landscapes, lightning and the kids, is the A7RIII a better bet than the A9?
I have a 5D mark IV and would love a smaller footprint for everyday stuff. Planning to get the metabones adapter and keep my Canon gear for now. Might pick up an FE prime to go with it.

I wonder if the “compression” happens during readout... in other words, information is being dropped as part of an optimized read-out process to make the RAW file smaller and the read-out faster?
That might explain why there’s no lossless compression. Lossless compression would require the full uncompressed read-out followed by a post-processing compression phase which would be considerably slower than dropping data during the read-out to get a smaller file.
EDIT:
Looking at this article on how Sony compressed RAW works...
It doesn't seem like any of the compression can be done without reading out all the data. So I don't understand how it can read-out faster in compressed mode than uncompressed.

The only advantage for me with uncompressed RAW on my A7RII is when really pushing the shadows - the uncompressed RAW file looks a bit better (in the shadows).

So movement distortion.
I think so, if the subject or camera moves faster than 1/13s, there will be distortion. The faster, the more distortion. That's one feature the A9 is still king...

I think that if the goal is to avoid distortion, the higher fps the better. However, Sony didn't specified.
This is mighty weird
Here's a possibility:
At high FPS and compressed raw it goes to 12 bit (Counterintuitively it seems that with uncompressed it now stays at 14 which is an improvement on A7rII)
Maybe the sensor can be scanned faster if you are only aiming for 12 bit? Not sure why; but I can't see any other explanation!

But it was already reported that precision won't drop to 12 bit in continuous shooting with the A7RIII.

The reports I read said that precision doesn't drop with continuous uncompressed shooting, but still does with continuous compressed. But I can't recall where I read that, sorry. So I'd better look...
