I would think there major market is outside of Japan where consumers have larger hands

The A7RII doesn't offer electronic shutter in continuous mode, and does black the viewfinder when using the physical shutter (no way not to, unless you freeze the EVF image).
I can't see anything unrefined about the A7R III that suggests it was released before it was ready. It lacks Playmemories Apps and lossless RAW compression, but so does the A9, I doubt either of those things will be addressed any time soon. Yes it has the same number of megapixels as the previous model, but so does the A7II. DR improvments are going to be hard to come by going forward as read noise is already so low (n.b. DR is increased vs the II for some methods of measuring DR).
A9 like AF/fps/electronic shutter will depend on a next generation sensor that could be a year away.
Because that would be a major change in the body shape that would require significant retooling, and they are probably receiving very few complaints from their main markets in Japan/Asia (it's basically the opposite of the original X-box controller that everyone in Japan complained about because it was too big for their hands)....Show more →

That sounds like “love it or leave it” mentally of the USA instead of love it and make it better
Every complaint towards Sony cameras gets criticized but in the end many of the complaints are address by Sony even though the complainer is harassed for the complaint

There is also the option of going back shooting with a SLR.

I'm not harassing you, far from it. You think having a smaller camera (smaller grip) is a drawback that needs to be fixed. However, it's a plus for many shooters and it's actually a differential for the Sony mirrorless system.
If that does not work for you, there are other options available including using the grip extension, vertical battery grip or the Sony A99 if you want to stay with Sony.

Im definitely going to stay with Sony but like many see changes that would help improve the enjoyment of the camera
Thanks Fred Miranda wrote:

Im sure there is a limited amount of space in the grip itself. They put in a larger battery and the only way to get more of a gap is make the whole camera wider. For them that may not be a option as they are trying to keep there line smaller than the competition and view that as a competitive edge. I don't have a issue myself and i have sausage fingers.
I do understand this one size fits all does not always work but Canon and Nikon have the same issue with the one size fits all. No way in hell I'm I going back because its too big. Not something I want anymore. This is not like buying a 20 golf glove to fit your hands. I agree with Fred if it don't work no one is twisting anyones arm to buy Sony. Bottom line it is what they make just like any car, buy that model or find another one. This is just basic logic

I just now noticed that the A7rIII has pixel shifting - and the examples posted on today's Sony Rumors show a significant difference in detail! Argh! I didn't want to pack cameras that have different batteries!!

You could use a USB charger and have the battery in each camera always topped up. I do this all of the time with my A7RII. That way, you don't need to bring extra Sony batteries.
A nice upgrade to the A7RIII is the ability to use an accessory with the microUSB port (like a wired intervalometer) while charging the battery via the USB-C port. The A7RII only has the microUSB port, which is what I use for charging.

I assume you are talking about a USB battery pack - not a plug in charger? That's a novel idea!

That's correct. When I shoot, I just keep my A7RII plugged in to my USB battery via a USB>microUSB cable. The camera will operate and charge at the same time. If I'm shooting handheld, I will put the USB battery in my pocket; if I am shooting with a tripod, I attach it to my tripod. Because the microUSB connector on the A7RII is flimsy, I use a Tether Tools JerkStopper to stabilize the cable. It works remarkably well.

If you want to charge batteries via USB power pack on the road without the camera that is trivial and cheap too. I've used this tiny cadget for years, in fact it has been only charger I've used in last 3 years.

This is why I continue to appreciate FM! I've kept a USB flashlight more for what in my mind was "emergency" charging of cell phone or InReach Explorer and just carried handfulls of camera batteries to areas where there was no electricity or vehicle. You guys just introduced a paradigm shift in my planning and packing. Thanks!

Yep, I've used this for my A7RII batteries - I like being able to see what the state of charge is on each battery so I don't have to put it in the camera to see the % charge:
USB cable is a little short, but great for travel.
Being able to charge the battery in the A7RII is one of those little things that I marvel at that Sony was able to pack into the A7 series bodies. Why can't I do that with my D800?

Yep, those are so cheap (around 20 something euros here in Europe with two clone batteries) that I just have two of them, one in the car one at home to charge the batteries when I need it...
Together with one of those three ports usb chargers, I charge at night when traveling up to four batteries plus my mobile phone in the same power outlet.
