Apparently, according to a Sony engineer, the reason they don't include Play Memories is "we don't include Play Memories because professionals don't need Play Memories"
?t=2368
However Sony did ask them to get feedback on if people use the Timelapse App.

Yeah I started doing this but realised it made reviewing images in the field (to check focus etc.) a massive pain. Now I tend to shoot manual with auto-iso and exposure compensation set to -3 in an attempt to protect the highlights.
It's yet another feature that would be trivial for manufacturers to implement but would make a big difference...
Do you see any difference between compressed and uncompressed raw when doing this?
This is how HTP (Highlight Tone Priority) should be implemented:
The user should be able to set HTP from x = 0 to 6 stops. When HTP is active, it should not affect the exposure, but use ISO x stops lower than what is either selected by the user or calculated automatically.
If an ISO lower than (base + x) is selected, the effective HTP should be adjusted down automatically so that base ISO is used. HTP should do this instead of limiting the lowest ISO you can use with HTP to (base+x). This could be optional though.
From last hardware ISO offering a measurable lower read noise, it should be automatically locked to that ISO and override both the ISO and the HTP setting. This should also be done when HTP is set to 0 (off).
This way using HTP will have no negative effects besides increasing read noise when it has to, and never more than selected by the user.
Exposure compensation should of course work on top of that and just change the exposure as it does today.
Ironically Canon implemented HTP (one stop) at the time theirs sensor had the worst banding.

A couple to things I can't find in the brochure and some of you may know the answer too
1. Does the camera have same same mechanism that will switch from the EVF-LCD when you flip the screen out as this is one of the most annoying about the A7rII when holding the camera close you it keeps going back to the EVF?
2. Can we expect to see no blackout when shooting in continuous silent mode?
3. I would like to order a screen protector and I see the specs have changed but it appears to be the same size. Am I correct in this?
Thanks

1. Yes, I believe this was 1st seen on A9. This was mentioned in some tester video
2. There is some blackout with silent continuous. See this test video, latter half shows silent continuous
3. Sony's official PCK-LG1 protector fits both A7RII, A7RIII and A9 so dimensions have not changed and everything that fits older model should fit A7RIII too. The new WhiteMagic stuff only seems to affect internals in terms of brightness etc.

Thanks. strange how it goes dark at 10fps in both electronic and mechanical shutter mode as my A7rII's don't do this Maybe it's something to do with the video recording of the screen). Anyway 8fps is more than enough for my needs and I usually shoot at low continuous speed

I don't think you can. Apps seem to go through a separate programming function and I don't believe it's an available option when assigning setting to memory.

Been using it for some time now. It's not too difficult. Set up your camera the way you want for the memory setting, go to the menus [camera icon]; 9; scroll to memory; select 1 or 2; press center button. Settings are saved to either 1 or 2 on the dial.

Can we tag photos in the camera like we can with Canon and Nikon pro DSLR ?
When I say tag, I mean "protect" (key logo).
Are the images download first when using PhotoMechanic?

Marking images as "protected" is supported on the existing A7rII model (page 44 of the A7rII manual describes it).

If the dramatic range is going to be the same as the AR7II with no increase in file size it really makes me think Sony wanted to only slow sales down of the Nikon D850 by releasing the A7RIII before it was really ready and more refined
I personally would rather wait for the A9R with better focus and file size

There is no 9R coming.

I would think it takes years of planning and engineering to release a camera. I highly doubt a camera can be released in a few months. Sony has an internal roadmap and is releasing their cameras to maximize their revenues. I'm even sure Sony's plans have the eventual releases of the mirrorless systems from both Canon and Nikon.
Now pricing is something that can change on a dime and the release of the D850 at it's price point I'm sure influenced Sony's pricing.

These products have multiyear development cycle and pretty much nothing indicates A7R III was rushed to market, in fact there seems is quite short time from release to deliveries when compared to Sony's historical delay between announcement and delivery.
"Better focus and file size" sounds a bit mutually defeating from what we know of mirrorlerss technology. A9 focuses better and this has a lot to do with faster AF updates from stacked sensor which again has a lot to do with the fact that A9 sensor has less megapixels, it is faster to read (some of the coolest tricks in mirrorless use image recognition tech so you actually need to read the sensor). We've just seen a step forward with EVF resolution/refresh, AF, internal processing and IO in Sony cameras this year, IMO it is a bit unreasonable to expect another leap too soon. If Sony was to build significantly higher res camera soon I think it would be a bit like Canon 5DSR; a bunch of compromises in everywhere else but resolution and I just don't see Sony doing that; it is not like 5DS(R) were a big hit.
Sure there will be higher res camera with better AF, but the wait for one might be longer than many people think.

I don’t understand why Sony didn’t address the issue with the grip being to tight to get your fingers between the grip and lens like the 70-200 and the 100-400
Not everyone has small hands

The A7RII doesn't offer electronic shutter in continuous mode, and does black the viewfinder when using the physical shutter (no way not to, unless you freeze the EVF image).

I can't see anything unrefined about the A7R III that suggests it was released before it was ready. It lacks Playmemories Apps and lossless RAW compression, but so does the A9, I doubt either of those things will be addressed any time soon. Yes it has the same number of megapixels as the previous model, but so does the A7II. DR improvments are going to be hard to come by going forward as read noise is already so low (n.b. DR is increased vs the II for some methods of measuring DR).
A9 like AF/fps/electronic shutter will depend on a next generation sensor that could be a year away.

Because that would be a major change in the body shape that would require significant retooling, and they are probably receiving very few complaints from their main markets in Japan/Asia (it's basically the opposite of the original X-box controller that everyone in Japan complained about because it was too big for their hands).

A7R3 is the A9R
Everybody said it and we knew that Sony will update all A7 cameras to match a9 physical features (body) like double SD cards, battery etc. that is what Sony has done.
On the hindsight, this was so obvious and SAR still got it wrong. They seem to have released R model first to match D850 and also because a high megapixel camera is better diffferentiated with a9. Releasing a 24mp model will pull many people away from buying a9 if they decide that a cheaper a73 with double SD cards, battery etc is ‘enough’ for them, especially if they don’t need 100 FPS
As to is it a definite upgrade from A7R2 or not, for me it is. It seems to be a camera that A7R2 should have been.
I think the next blockbuster will come when Nikon releases their mirrorless body. Either that will already be behind what Sony offers, or it will be like, ground breaking like Nikon 1 was when it was done. I am sure Sony is already working on their reply to Nikon Mxxx for a long time. Maybe we will see a completely electronic body sans mechanical shutter just then. Or maybe their high resolution camera will be as fast as an a9.
