Actually the cost is to sensitivity, peak DR is unaffected (in the same way that using an ND filter doesn't affect DR).
I think the improved colour and sharpness relates to the pixel shift feature, which genuinely does improve both.
Re DR: true at base ISO of course, but I meant (admittedly not clearly) in light limited situations - ie at all other ISOs where reduced sensitivity means higher ISO which means less DR.
Re Improved colour/ sharpness: maybe they mean pixel shift (which when u can use it will give better everything) but they also have the new JPEG engine with fancier area sharpening and changed colour....so maybe they meant that

At the expense of disagreeing with The Fred, what I am seeing so far in samples from the III bests what I would expect the II to do under the same conditions. Most pics are JPEG with the 24-105, which is hardly ideal compared with RAW and primes, but there are a couple with the CV 40 f:1.2, which is more or less a known quantity. And though it is scant evidence so far, my take on it is that the improvement in IQ is indeed there. My blog-partner Pascal, seeing the same pics without prodding from me came to the exact same conclusion, and both of us shoot IIs.

Phillipe, one thing that likely improved, perhaps a fair bit, is the jpeg processing in the new camera. I wouldn't be surprised if jpegs are much nicer. We will have to wait to compare RAWs, however, before we know if there is a real improvement in IQ.

I was always happy with the IQ on the version 2 that was maybe the least issue I had. Mine was more functionality and speed. Now they copied the A9 well almost. That left dial I like a lot on the A9, so now I need to find a home for drive and AF mode. I’ll put the drive in the FN since I don’t access that much. But AF mode I will put on left dial. I got my A9 setup so nice . I need to iPhone all my settings. Lol

A pretty good first-look at the 24-105 F4 here:
Not too sure about the FE 24-105G...yet. It feels harsh but could be just the lighting. Also the first portrait marginally missed the near eye focus. The 24-105 is a very difficult optic to design as it encompasses a wide FL range.

I pre-ordered the 24-105/4 G. I'm sure it willl have compromises in terms of distortion, vignetting and rendering but I'm hopeful Sony was able to keep resolution high enough for most of the range. I see sharp jpeg samples available right now even for the long range.
I am very surprised by how well the 12-24/4 G performs and that's a good sign.
Are there RAWs available for download?

I agree the 24-105G is a must have lens. I have not seen any RAW's yet. The size/weight is similar to other FF offerings.
The 12-24/4 G is an excellent lens and really fits in the philosophy of keeping the size/weight down as a package. The 16-35/2.8 GM looks to be very compelling

Yea I ordered the 24-105 as well. I needed a mid range zoom anyway so certainly worth trying and given Sony hit it out of the park with the 12-24 this is the same bloodline a G. Just maybe it will be good

Seems to be a smart strategic move by Sony to include this FL in the Emount system. The 24-105/F4 is much loved among many Canon photogs and from the samples I see so far, the new FE appears to be very sharp which will appeal to many that would buy/use this lens.

For those that own an A9, I'm not sure I would give it up just yet, without trying an A7Riii first hand ... if AF speed, tracking and accuracy are important.
The A7Riii has inherited the A9's algorithm, not it's hardware which does 60 AF calculations per second. And Sony states on their website that the (up to) 2x AF speed improvement is specifically under dim lighting conditions, not all conditions.

Agreed, it would probably make a great first lens for many people just getting started putting together a new FF system too. I'd likely get one in this focal range if I were to add a FF system to go along with my Fuji system.

"...the only thing sensor design influences is your ability to detect diffraction"
Well stated. My understanding is that diffraction limited aperture on 24MP APS-C will be wider than 36MP or 42MP full frame. If I look at acutance profiles on dxo for FE lenses on a6000 at small apertures (admittedly just part of the story) I think I can see this. Then again the olpf differs so it's not an accurate comparison, and the profiles on dxo are not split into MTF10,30 & 50.

I'm not sure I even own a zoom in any format right now . . . mostly all primes.
I guess my 8-18/2.8-4 PL and my ancient (but pretty good) 24-85/3.5-4.5 AFS Nikon are still in the lens drawer. The PL is staying, the Nikon going, and likely never to buy a zoom for my A7RIII.
Hopefully Sony's version of the 24-105 is way better than Nikon was able to put out.

I’m watching this very closely before making my final decision. The A9 is a rocket here. If I can get close I’ll be okay but it’s has go to be better than the rII as that was the reason I sold it, too slow. I need my mpx back. Lol

Yeah, if on Nikon mount I'd take a long hard look at the Sigma Art zoom for this focal range.

The other real strength for the FE 24-105/f4 G OSS length is videos. I have a number of friends that are shooting weddings and their clients love the 1920x1080 Slo Motion clips alongside their wedding portfolios. The 24-105 needs to have a smooth zoom ring and MF for videos.
