p.35 #1 · Pre-orders open! Sony A7R III and FE 24-105mm f/4 OSS lens!

Who would not want 42MP, 10fps, great DR and full MF/AF/AE/Video/apps hi-tech features in a fair market prize. There must be ton of switchers waiting for this play ground establishment model. Imo, A7Riii will be sold like a hot cake. Very good move Sony.

I’m actually worried I won’t get mine from Amazon on day one even though I was on it at the bell to order. Watched it come up on their site.

I agree. The thing is, the sensor on the A7Rii pretty much has no equal on the FF arena until the new Nikon came out and still DXO ratest high iso performance better on the A7Rii so any small improvement they can do to it, I am fine since its a monster anyways. What impresses me is SO MUCH MORE that has been added that I can actually use for my daily work.

I would have ordered from Amazon since I have Prime but they now charge taxes to Utah so I no longer use it for big items :/

Same here as for me it’s more a place holder without my CC getting tagged because I use PayPal mostly they would take my money immediately. It’s a PITA . I’ll usually switch to available stock at B&H or Adorama last minute. I may not be able to do that this time. Loads of pre-orders.

For now it seems there is a clear difference. The A9 can drive combos that all the way to f/11, (such as the 100-400 with the 2X TC), whereas the A7r II could only drive combos to f/8. I haven't heard about the A7r III yet, but I am guessing it will be f/8 too. That will leave a somewhat similar situation to Canikon where the a9 is clearly better with TCs than the A7r III.

F11 with the 100-400mm/1.4TC is a must for me. Image quality really improves at the long end with the extra stop. Even Brian Smith doesn't know what the PDAF limit might be.

the new 425 CDAF and 4DAF algorithm updated will improve the A7Riii AF detection by one stops faster compared to A7Rii.

I’m really counting on this. Plus we pick up a -3 EV like the A9 versus -2 of the A7r2

Preordered! The Apple X, that is .

While I was away for several days, I couldn't actually go through the specs in details. And now, I felt a little underwhelmed with them..... and they took away the PlayMemories apps . I will probably end up getting it but I won't pre-order it.

I know you will, Joshua. Maybe for a backup for another back up like you always do

GMPhotography, I'm not sure we are going to get an A9R quite yet. I think Sony could do a 60MP sensor, which would have around equal pixel pitch as their 24MP APS-C sensor. However, I somehow doubt they are at the point where they could do it and maintain expected high ISO performance. So then you have a camera a bit like the 5dsr (probably better) which is not an all arounder. My hunch is two more years for that.

I was thinking a year but you certainly maybe right. This is MF territory so going to be hard for them to produce in this size format

Here you also have a very basic look at the performance of the 24-105 vs other lenses: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/sony-a7r-iii/sony-a7r-iiiA.HTM#comparison

Some interesting compare info here. Good find. The A7r3 + FE 24-104 is looking really good in these compare images. But I already see defensiveness in the comments section. We Sony photogs might as well buckle up now...I see some turbulence ahead.

***Note skin tones among the cameras compared.

Have we seen any step back on sony sensor performance. With 60-80 MP A9R they must strike their best to par the MF performance. I still think they will have it out sometime next year.

It's a great camera for anyone switching systems or upgrading from one of the older models. If you already own an A7RII then it's a smallish upgrade. I'm in the latter category, so what I'd be getting is essentially:

  1. Dual card slots. Huge benefit for doing paid work.
  2. Af joystick. Big improvement in usability for the way I work.
  3. Bigger battery. Not personally that bothered (have a lot of FW50s already).
  4. 10 fps. Nice but I wouldn't use it much.
  5. Improved AF - always nice to have.
  6. Pixel shift. Nice but wouldn't use it much.
  7. Video improvements. Don't use video very much but maybe that will change.
  8. Some minor features/improvements (EVF, touchscreen, buffer, speed, electronic shutter in burst mode, anti-flicker).

So the big ones are dual card slots and AF. I said before the announcement I would upgrade for these alone, and I still will. But what I really wanted was:

  1. 60MP - that gives 24MP in crop mode and gives all the advantages of APS-C and FF in one body.
  2. Faster electronic shutter - maybe not as fast as the A9, but an improvement over 1/13s.
  3. ISO 50 / deeper well depth. Despite what Sony have said, it looks like DR will be pretty much the same as the mkII.

Well Sony has a 50mpx CMOS already in Play for Medium format and I have not been paying attention but I think 100mpx as well. Now if you took the 100mpx and cut it to 24x35 not sure what that gives us but this is also different technology too so not sure they can take that and actually use it in 35mm. Problem or could be a problem is getting a 60mpx 35mm format with pixels wells that small. So maybe until that tech comes along we are in a holding pattern. But like to leave that really up to our engineers here to explain this far better than me. i know when to get off the bus and ask for directions.

Going from 42 MP to 60 MP is much less increase than going from 24 to 42 given that the resolution is linear a quantity; you'd need about 75 MP to get similar a real/significant resolution increase like 24 => 42. Current cameras seem to be limited in terms of how much data they can move (sensor ==> buffer/SoC ==> card) so with a 60-70 MP camera you would lose FPS and maybe even AF update frequency from sensor. So such camera would only be a 5DS R competitor; and that marker is much smaller than the one occupied by D850, 5D Mk IV etc.

Sony could propably somewhat easily cut bigger pieces from the same wafer that the high end camera sensors are made of, to even go over 100 MP, but building a usable camera around such sensor is a different game. So they would propably end up with a camera that handles more like MF camera, but without any of the benefits that the MF sensor size brings.

I was undecided, but tending toward "no". I've decided that it's definitely "no". No real benefit for me, other than the better viewfinder, which is nice but I wouldn't upgrade just for that.

I'll play wait-n-see: either an A9R with at least 70-80 MP (although that will include a ton of stuff that I don't want, such as high speed and so forth), or a Fuji GFX when they come out with a 100 MP upgrade. The latter isn't ideal since I like sticking with one system, but I think it would be a good choice for dedicated landscape, with the present A7RII for everything else.

Yes Sony make a 100MP 645 chip.

If you cut it down to 36x24 you would end up with 39.8 megapixels.

Wells would be the same size as a 24MP APS-C sensor, larger than anything available in micro 43rds, much larger than any 1" compact, and simply huge compared to smartphone sensors.
