Having the 12-24G and 100-400GM this new lens gives up with TCs 12-800mm in three lenses! A no-brainer for a really concise travel kit.
So here's hoping the 24-105 is as good as the 12-24.

If it is as good at 5.6 as the 24-70 GM maybe I sell this last one and buy this... After all, I'm doing mainly landscape, I barely use f2.8, and that combo you mention: 12-24, 24-105 and 100-400 will be a killer kit for me... anyway, for the moment saving for the 12-24 first, step by step

Here you also have a very basic look at the performance of the 24-105 vs other lenses: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/sony-a7r-iii/sony-a7r-iiiA.HTM#comparison

Sure, the new A7RIII gets close to A9 functionality. It's basically better in everything. That's reason enough for me to get one as well.

However, after all these years, I was hoping that the A7RII successor would have a newer sensor tech with higher resolution, broader DR and lower base ISO (like 50). Basically something that would 'shake up' the market again...

I really feel Sony has something up their sleeves in terms of sensor tech. Otherwise perhaps we are hitting a plateau.

I think A7r III is Sony moving to recover all the money they are spending trying to get more margin in the market, for several reasons:

- They are using part of the electronics designed for A9, so they can recover from that.
- Using an "old" sensor design from "two years ago", with improvements, but much cheaper that designing one from scratch.

In the other hand, yes we are used to see Sony move to a really fast pace, but look at this, it took then two years to upgrade the camera, when other manufacturers typically use 4 years intervals between high end cameras.

I think next year Sony probably will launch more cameras in the A9 line, or at least I hope, time will tell.

Now, as some people is commenting here, as this camera it is just "fixes" AF and speed and I mainly do landscapes, I will stick with the A7r II

One thing I've been wondering: With Canikon one key difference between the D5/1DX series and the lower priced bodies is the drive speed with converters. The 1DX2, for instance, drives an f2.8 or f4 prime extremely quickly and reliably even with a 2x TC. Supposedly, this is thanks to larger batteries compared to the 7D/5D series.

However, with e-mount that analogy doesn't work, as the a7riii and the a9 share the same battery. Does anybody have any elaborated guesses whether there will be a difference between these two cameras when used with TC combos?

For now it seems there is a clear difference. The A9 can drive combos that all the way to f/11, (such as the 100-400 with the 2X TC), whereas the A7r II could only drive combos to f/8. I haven't heard about the A7r III yet, but I am guessing it will be f/8 too. That will leave a somewhat similar situation to Canikon where the a9 is clearly better with TCs than the A7r III.

I've only read through 2 out of the 29 pages of this thread so cannot say for sure. But has anyone mentioned anything about the electronic shutter performance for the r3?

My gut tells me that based on lack of reference to it in the available marketing literature so far, it is not going to be able to do what the A9 does with regard to curing rolling shutter and banding issues.

Anyone have any input on this?

Rolling shutter improvements in A9 was mainly because it was an stacked sensor with real fast readout, A7r III will not be that fast, In this video you can get an idea about how it looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=519&v=Cq8ZWpDtWMM

I will wait until I see reviews and lots of reports from users, but if the 24-105 f/4 OSS is good that will be my (really the plan for my wife who shoots AF) plan too. I have always thought the Sony mirrorless cameras are a great fit for f/4 zooms and small f/1.8-f/2 primes. So, I will round out her kit with a Batis 25, Zony 55, Batis 85, and Batis 135. If we ever get a really nice 35 f/1.8 or f/2 I would get that for her as well.

The 24-105 copy the Imaging Resource Page had to test looks like it is decented at infinity 24mm and 50mm photos they uploaded. It was consistently much weaker on the left side no matter the scene.

That can be at IBIS correction as well.

Oh ok. They were all handheld at fairly low shutter speeds.

Sharpness could theoretically be improved with smaller micro lenses, but at the cost of DR

Actually the cost is to sensitivity, peak DR is unaffected (in the same way that using an ND filter doesn't affect DR).

DavidBM wrote:
But in fact the stuff about colour and sharpness is about the new JPEG engine

I think the improved colour and sharpness relates to the pixel shift feature, which genuinely does improve both.

I ordered this lens from Amazon and main reason I can return it a couple times if I have too. Although I have to admit the last 4 or 5 lenses I have bought Cv40,Cv 65, Loxia 21, Sony 85 1.8, Batis 135 and Loawa 15 all one and done. Forgot 12-24 too

I’ve been lucky. Lol

At this point you will be in the second or third wave. Reports of a lot of pre-orders

I would go by more here who is closer to Sony for sales not how big they are even though that maybe the same. You actually might want to look at smaller retailers they may only get a couple but you maybe in the top 5 too.

Allen’s camera
Samys
Best Buy
Etc.

I think only those who are virtually happy with everything and anything (or at least in their blogs) would be invited to those marketing events.

I am sure it is a nice camera, but some issues are difficult to notice without extended use in different situations. (E.g, star eater, raw posterization in R2 won’t show up in normal situations)

Oh I dont think that AT ALL. Many times I question why people like Tony Northrup which was always crapping on Sony stuff (no longer the case) was invited to events over and over..so nope, I dont agree with that view.

Ahh wires have gotten crossed - I think the post you replied to was talking about the drop from 14-bits to 12-bits in bulb mode (I know it appears to reference the 16-bit stuff, but then it talks about the footnote (which details the 14 to 12 bit drop) and "throwing away data when processing the least time sensitive stuff" i.e. bulb mode), not the use of a 16-bit pipeline with 14-bit data.

For clarity, I totally agree that a 16-bit ADC is just oversampling noise, but I don't believe the drop to 12-bit in bulb mode has anything to
...Show more

You are both a bit confused.
The ADC produces 14-bit values (at most).
They are "padded" on the left with 2-bits and stored in a 16-bit value in the raw file.
This is a firmware issue (not circuitry) probably made because packing 14-bit values without padding would be time consuming.
A lossless compressed scheme would put all of this to rest

Bill, that's consistent with what both Matt and I wrote. The "16-bit processing" is from Sony's spec page.
