A7Rii can use electronic shutter right?
So you will never be able to get exact shutter count unless Sony wants you to.
Probably Precision repair would tell you for a fee.

Apps and a marriage.
Had a hard nap after my shift in the hospital.
Had a quasi-waking dream and saw a marriage.
Why use the camera's computer horsepower to run the app when the smartphone has a pretty
decent computer and memory.
The marriage already begun with having the phone due the the GPS/location work and reporting.
Future app developments for Sony cameras will be smartphone based.
Only if Sony made smartphones eh
Sony cameras and Sony smartphone just might get married and in ways we cannot imaging now=complete extensions of each other.
Then my nap ended.

Have you tried the A9? I'm having a hard time understanding what there isn't to like about that camera. The ergonomics and customizability are superb. There are a few quirks that I would love to take out of the buried menus, and some commonly used things (like formatting cards) are little more deeply buried than I'd prefer. I'd also like to a lock on the rear function wheel (I use if for ISO, and more than once it gets bumped to the wrong ISO). But between the custom buttons and the 3 memory modes, I'm hard pressed to find things that really put me off. And this is from someone who just came over from Nikon and Leica cameras, both of which have outstanding ergonomics. ...Show more →
You can lock down the buttons. It’s in the menu somewhere but you can kick in so you don’t hit something by mistake

Hmmm. I know the Sony A9 doesn't provide that in EXIF, but I thought I was able to get an estimate with this tool for the A7rII at some point in the past. Maybe I was mistaken. Thanks for the response.

I need to be honest: it reminds me a bit on the Canon 5D MkII and MkIII story years back: no improvement in sensor, just focus on AF performance. I personally hoped to see a 60 MP FF sensor with even more DR.....
Sorry, not interested in the A7R III since I don't need 4K video nor all the AF features....and not getting some of the Sony apps anymore is a big bummer here, too.
It's not like the 5D Mk II to Mk III upgrade in the sense Sony claim's 1-stop improvement in dynamic range and there is also doubling of the frame rate. The 5D Mk III upgrade was mostly towards build, ergonomics and AF.
I was also excepting higher resolution but it seems that 42.2MP is the sweet spot for improving DR while still having high resolution and great video specs. Still no ISO 64 though.
I'm definitely getting the new A7RIII while keeping my A7RII as a backup camera. I will miss not having Smooth Reflections and Time Lapse but there are workarounds.

exiftool will show you the count. Run it against your most recent photo and look for the "Image Count" field in the resulting output.

Yes...but the improvement in regard to sensor and IQ is still minimal (let's see in final tests how effective the 1 step in DR really is and where it counts (low/high ISO)) - and this is what I related to with the 5D MkII/III comparison (ok, in the Canon case there was zero improvement in IQ, now here with Sony it is a tiny bit). And fps....I find it totally useless for applications the A7R originally was made for. 1 fps is totally fine for me with this kind of high res/high DR camera....different story for the A9 where applications for it need this kind of high fps. If I would upgrade from my A7R, it clearly would be the A7R II and not the A7R III.

retrofocus,
If true, a 1-stop improvement in dynamic range is not tiny though.
Also, even though higher frames per second or video specs are not useful to you, it is for many shooters combining high resolution with speed. It basically beats the Nikon D850 at 7 frames per second (or 9 with grip)

Not even considering letting my A9 go until I can either rent the A7RIII in person and evaluate AF / Eye-AF performance, or someone on YouTube does a serious comparison between the two, specifically on AF differences (or lack thereof). The A9 is darn near perfect except for 24MP, and even that's a bonus in some scenarios where we don't have to worry too much about lens resolving power.
The largest I ever print is 24x36 and 42MP is still overkill for that in 99% of scenarios relevant for me.

The resolution makes sense because they could use the same sensor. I wonder what limitations resulted from this decision? Cover glass and all downstream improved, but For now, all is marketing. For those with the A9, I would not sell until we have more real world info.

Yea the more I look at things I want to rent it first before I sell my A9. I’m backing off my plan and that’s because nothing is going to touch this A9 anytime soon. If I had the A7rII currently you could not spit fast enough I would have it in my hands. Lol
The lack of AF points is a problem for me and one reason I went to the A9. I’m not in any hurry either..
The 24-105 I am getting for sure . I need a PR type zoom anyway so this is a no brainer.
The real bottom line is I’m downgrading for MPX and I still may do it but like others I need to know how much improvement there really is in operation. Hell I could always buy back a A7rII cheap and keep the A9.
What I need to see again is the AF area shown on the A7RIII just a image of that 68 percent

If the 1-stop increase in DR is at low ISO, yes, I think this would be great indeed. But if it is at high ISO....couldn't care less....
