Anyone have any ideas about the banding on the A7r3? Currently in artificial light anything faster than 1/60 has terrible banding!

DPR says:

Unfortunately though, since sensor readout speeds aren't improved, we're not expecting any decrease in banding during full-silent shooting (e-shutter) under artificial lighting.

I understand that the ii and iii use the same sensor, but better AF, EVF and faster processing. What limitations are imposed by using the same sensor..ie: same rolling shutter, greater shutter lag than Aa9

According to a DPreview editor (who has had a hands-on), there is no PlayMemories App ecosystem on A7Riii.

Apparently, its just the Playmemories app support on Smartphone (to transfer images and remote control etc.)

Pretty unfortunate - as a landscape photographer, I used a few apps like Smooth reflection, Timelapse and the touchless shutter quite a bit.

I was really hoping they would improve upon this ecosystem and open it to the developers, instead, they retrograde and remove the most forward thinking feature from their new iterations. Disappointing.

Tripod in general will yield higher frequency detail that’s just a given. Question is can you match it with IBIS and a given shutter speed. Problem is you may not see it sometimes

can pixel shift be used to get a monochrome image? or will you just convert the final composite?

For those who have used both A7RII and A9: how much better is the higher res EVF for focus on small details? I've found that small distant details (for example, a distant street sign on which I sometimes focus for lens testing) is right on the edge of seeing whether focus is actually spot-on with my A7RII. Higher res should help quite a bit with such situations, I'd think.

Just realized...with the A7R3, I believe it'll be the first time in years that I'll potentially have one camera as opposed to 2 (action & sports / landscape & portrait).

It's all the reasons I liked my A99ii, but with the size and modern lenses that were lacking on a-mount. That said, I might consider a grip to use with bigger lenses for motorsport where both battery life and handling are a bigger priority than size.

I wonder why they are removing the apps from the latest generation of cameras? Is it because the A9 and A7R3 are viewed a "professional" cameras and having apps makes them appear geared towards the iphone crowd? Is there a limitation in the new cameras of some sort? Did Sony have a lot of complaints about these apps requiring a lot of extra customer support?

Wish they would come out and let us know what made them decide to remove the apps from the latest camera releases.

I thought the same this morning actually very late last night and today I am doing the real homework. A9 users get one thing and one thing only, more MPX but there are some losses here too. I need to get both spec sheets and analyze this much more carefully. My gut says one thing but my brain needs to match it

Not entirely. I am not planning on selling my A9 but the A7r3 does have a 10FPS mechanical shutter, higher dynamic range at low ISOs (though how much is hard to say), and picture profiles. There are a new other pluses, but aside from resolution (which I don’t need but want) those three things made me pause and think. They still aren’t enough for me personally. If I made more money with photography I’d love the A7R3 as a second body, I think the two would make a great pair.

The 24-105 I am very excited about and scheming to buy. It is a bit more expensive than I’d hoped but so far looks promising (for a 4x zoom!).

Oh that is a bummer about the apps. Smooth Reflection and Digital Filter are pretty useful.

Overall, I'm not too impressed by the spec upgrade here--at least not over the A7rII. The rII is already plenty fast in my use and has most of the bells and whistles here. I kind of doubt whether Sony will even release an A7III (at least while the A7rII is current). The A7rII seems like it will continue to be sold at the discounted $2400 price for a while and will probably be the new middle spec camera of the FE range for stills shooters. This follow's their RX lineup strategy of discounting the prior high-tier camera instead of replacing lower-spec models.

Sony has a little blurb about this on the specification page. This what they say:

Flicker from fluorescent and other artificial lighting is automatically detected and shutter action is timed to minimize the flicker's effect on still images. This suppresses exposure and color anomalies at the top and bottom of images shot at high shutter speeds, as well as exposure and color inconsistency between continuous shots, so you can take images indoors with more confidence.

From my perspective it is not very clear what they mean by that and whether it is actually a change from the A7rII or not.

Boy, you guys are sharp! Eagle eyes!

Also that description sounds like some sort of crazy photography sorcery. I can't imagine automatic flicker detection to be fool-proof though...

The spec upgrade is not that great, but it'd almost be worth the money just to have responsive image review and menus, assuming those pan out. That drives me nuts with the a7rii.

Most of the changes won't make a huge difference for my shooting, which tends to be landscape, and slow.

The big question for me is whether the improved DR means anything or not.

They've also got to address star-eater--I'm still on an early version of a7rii firmware for this reason, which unfortunately precludes the use of certain of the apps.

AF points sticks out. A9 uses 693 AF points 93 percent coverage/ A7r3 uses 399 at 66 percent I believe and thats a VERY BIG concern. Bottom line doing a portrait on a vertical will you hit the EYE and I had this issue before with the A7r2. Bigger issue is runway for me . I use Eye AF for over 20k in shooting. And i never crop, its all in camera or in the garbage.

This one is a big downer for me and maybe the breaking point

I’m questioning it after I just checked the AF points. I just may rent it first.

Is there a comparison between TechArt performance on the A9 and A7r II? I use the TAP on an A9, and can now use eye detect (a capability not presently available on the A7r II). The A7r III has the A9 AF and I assume the latest firmware updates, so I would think that there would be some improvement between v. 2 and 3? Just guessing though. There may be aspects of the BSI sensor unique to the A9 that improve AF performance as well, and those benefits would be absent on the A7R III.

genji wrote:
Although it will certainly make a whole lot of photographers really happy, it seems as though the A7R III solves a bunch of problems that I don't have. The only thing that would make me upgrade both my A7R II bodies is if autofocus with the Techart PRO and TA-GA3 adapters is significantly improved. Hopefully Karl-Heinz will get an A7R III because I really trust his judgement concerning the Techart adapters.

Oh I didn't see that. So that's certainly not the A9 AF then. 93% viewfinder coverage with eye detect is kind of magical. I'm not willing to give that up, particularly for a sensor that places even greater demands for accurate focus than the A9's 24MP sensor.
