I’m excited by this camera. I thought for sure they were going to announce an A7 III first but I’m not complaining. This camera hits a lot of the so-called short comings of the A7rII, battery life, frame rate and yet they upped image quality. Can’t wait to see more.

There goes the air in the D850's sails!

I was hoping for the FE400/4 so I could heft it. I'll keep adapting the 400DOii in the mean time.

The big question for me is how much heavy lifting is needed for that 400 2.8 financially and in terms of pumping iron .

If the a7riii and the lens weigh as much as a D500/7D2 class camera and a 500 FL/500 USM II, then it would be a handholdable combo for me.

42 MP basically works like an in-built 1.4x TC, meaning that this 400 2.8 with a 1.4x TC and some cropping (down to 18 or 20 MP) would give me the equivalent of 800mm FL, while being only at f4.

Nice, but looks more like an S version of the iPhone. I will wait for the first comparison tests of the A7RII and buy the 24-105 G lens first. What I love is the new location of the Video-Button.

I'm staying put in this cycle.
Though the pixel shift (borrowed from their share in Olympus) can theoretically yield images of 160 mb uncompressed), my guess, has to be of extreme interest for landscapers!
The tried and true A7Rii will still do for landscapes and my a9 will do for something moving
But the A7Riii does look to be the glint in the eye for anyone wanting THE do everything body.

{on the pixel shift with the Oly it takes a 20ish mpx up to 40mb, so I'm simply thinking doubling the uncompressed raw 40mpx Sony output} I'm probably missing something on this and it only doubles to 80mpx ??

Wow. Those are some awesome specs. Just as I was getting used to the A9!

10FPS is more than fast enough for me, and it even operates without mirror blackout. I really like that joystick though.

Finally Sony adopts pixel shift. Will be amazing to see the results. Too bad I am already invested in Fuji GFX, but I wouldn't be surprised if this new Sony will beat the Fuji on details, at least when comparing pixel shift images...

How high is the possibility that Sony will realease a A9R with 60MPX?

Current Canon user, and needing to upgrade a worn out 6d, I was expecting an a73, but this is a much better prospect as a do everything camera. Happy to save up a bit more for it over an a7r2. This would look to eliminate all the potential hiccups I could see. Pleasantly surprised to be sure

Makes you wonder. Their previous roadmap was to first release an a7 series to be followed some time later with an a7r series. Perhaps now it will be a7r followed by a9r. A7r would be faster and the a9r would be a better landscape machine with higher pixel count but lower frame rate.

D850, 5Div are gurgling
And with the 400/2.8 announced Canikon must be shaking in the boots.

A9 joystick, dual slot and battery in the A7 line. Exactly what I was waiting for to jump eventually as a wedding photographer. No dual slot or a9 battery would have been a dealbreaker. Now I don't know if I need the 42mpx or if I'm going to wait for the A7III...

First part, I agree with, but in my humble opinion, we'll have to wait and see about the lens. This is a first for Sony after all. Canikon have had plenty of times and iterations to refine their 400 2.8's. Together with the 300 2.8's, the newest iterations are as good as it gets, with or without the TC's. Lance (who happens to be an excellent photographer irrespective of the lens he uses) over at the Nikon board has taken plenty of amazing shots with his 400 FL. It would be quite a feat, if Sony managed to match the performance and relatively low weight (3.8kg) of that lens (or the Canon equivalent).

Details of pixel shift from Dpreview:

"However, unlike the system Pentax uses or the earlier, 8-shot process used by Olympus, the a7R III cannot assemble the final images in-camera. Instead four Raw files must be processed using a freely downloadable image processing application for PCs that Sony will offer. The camera must also wait either 0.5, 1, or 2 seconds between shots for the sensor to settle, which is likely to exacerbate the problems of subject movement between the first and last shot."

This is definitely on my radar, but I'm going to wait for 1st (and maybe 2nd) user reports to see what "hidden features" Sony have included. Very interested to see if they have eliminated the star eater NR algorithm.

I don't get the appeal for landscapers. Either you're shooting grads or bracketing so 1 stop isn't huge.

Batteries - I already have 6 and 2 chargers. Changing in the field isn't inconvenient.

Multishot is useless for 90% of scenes.

USB is a nice improvement but anyone using a card reader doesn't care.

Same resolution, no weather sealing, no evf improvement, no screen res or size improvement and no touchscreen.
No astrotracer and likely the same star eater algorithm... Unless they want to force us to upgrade to remove that bug.

All for 25% more money? Yeah nah.

I am a tad disappointed with some things. I based this on features on flagship smartphones and flagship full frame cameras from Sony & Nikon.

* The two SD slots are not both UHS-II
* Would the UHS-II slot read/write at peak 312 MB/s (2000x)?
* LCD is not multitouch
* USB-C should be Thunderbolt 3 so it can combine video (remove micro HDMI), data and charging (remove micro USB) thus allowing for less weight & space.

I am happy Sony released this. May it light a fire under Canon & Nikon to offer better full frame bodies in the future or induce a price war.

Looks like they removed support for apps like they did on the A9.

EDIT: Ignore. Spec page still shows support (thanks Steve)

EDIT #2: Still uncertain about this.

Although it will certainly make a whole lot of photographers really happy, it seems as though the A7R III solves a bunch of problems that I don't have. The only thing that would make me upgrade both my A7R II bodies is if autofocus with the Techart PRO and TA-GA3 adapters is significantly improved. Hopefully Karl-Heinz will get an A7R III because I really trust his judgement concerning the Techart adapters.
