I wish they wouldn't offer any video function at all. I use a DSLR for STILL photography and a VIDEO camera for ... yep you guest it, videos. Shocking revelation there I know.
Would have been nice if they would have killed it off the 6DII completely so we didn't have to listen to all the whining and crying. It gets pretty sickening after a while.

I'm obviously not a big video guy. I do appreciate a nice HD vid once in a while. I have neither the time, storage space, or ability to share 4K videos. It is available on my 5D4, but I simply don't use that feature.
Perhaps if I some day start really dabbling with the video function, I'll learn to appreciate 4K a little more. But for now, stills are my thing, plus the occasional video, maybe in HD.

The market likes video, hell the 5d2 was fully promoted at launch based on video
And it's basically free too add too.
Yep, as was my 70D, but I have yet to ever use the feature. It's not what I purchase a DSLR for.
And like a lot of the whiners have said, cell phones can shoot 4k. So I would say to them, go ahead and yank that puppy out of your back pocket while you're out shooting with the 6DII and start shooting 4k video till your heart's content.
And here's a tissue.

6D2 looks good. The only weak points I see from the specs are:
1 No 4K
2 AF coverage area is too small
No 1/8000, 1/180 X-sync, UHS-1, USB 2 no joystick. When you have 45 points for AF, joystick is a must IMO.
Very nice camera but penny pinching and product segmentation stop it's being a superb camera. Canon probably knew if they added those little touches sales of 5D4 would drop a lot, but they'd sell so many more 6DII's the bottom line would be as good if not better IMO, so what does it matter.

Although, the difference was quite minimal. Still, for a period of time, the 6D was the cleanest sensor in the Canon lineup.
The 5D4 is quite good, but I am curious to see how the new 6D2 fares as well.
Almost certain there will be minimal differences in sensor performance. 5D4 and almost line ball. The 1DXII has a higher native high ISO, but when resampled to 20MP the 5D4 is as clean and has more detail, and DR will be almost certainly the same 13.5EV level unless Canon has moved to newer sensor tech or found a way to reduce read noise with existing tech that wasn't ready for the 5D4, which is very unlikely.

I will still be shooting Canon and Nikon. The A9 has intrigued me but I still find the cost prohibitive in Canada ( one body and a 100-400 GM with grip comes in at 9K CDN). I just want to downsize the gear and concentrate on the shooting. I will still have a close look at 7D3 and will be looking at D820 but will try to refrain😎
However I will be moving away from my eagles so the nest shots are coming to an end this next month. But I will try to find some fishing eagle opportunities on Vancouver Island. ...Show more →
I'm sad to hear that you're leaving the nest. :-)
Vancouver Island should have plenty of birds and beautiful backgrounds as well.
Best of luck out west. Looking forward to more supertele bird shots.

1. Because the file format creates a long winded, more time consuming workflow
2. No fully articulated screen
3. Much more expensive
Why would I like 4K? Because it gives me the ability to crop in during post. Also, when I go back 15 years and look at my digital photos of my son as a baby, the photos are really low in resolution and dynamic range. I wonder if in another 15 years, 1080p video will look similar....
Good point about quality (or lack thereof) for the future.
I remember when 640 x 480 was a waste of space to people who thought 320 x 240 was more than adequate. I always try to maximize resolution and quality for the future. I got the PowerShot G1 15+ years ago because it had raw and the comparable Nikon didn't. I can process those files again and end up with much better results now. Never skimp on the master or source files. :-)

I am cautiously optimistic this is the case It would seem the logical way to go.

Underplaying the value of having 4k video is crazy, like completely insane. It's like saying "I dont need 24mp, 6mp is good enough". How many people do you hear saying that? You can hardly even buy a 1080p television anymore... the time for every camera to have mandatory 4k is upon us, making excuses is silly.
Anyone for a little hyperbole?
Some folks buy a truck without a navigation system, dvd, wireless and a killer sound system and full power goodies and leather. By your assertion of it's increased commonplace being the rationale that it is insane to not have 4K video is insane, then it would be similarly insane to buy a truck without all those other things since they are commonly capable of being included as well ... IDK, and just be a truck rather than a mobile entertainment mecca, etc.
Some folks just want a camera to be a camera (i.e. stills, not a video camera). If you want a killer video camera, get a killer video camera. If you want a killer video camera and still camera, buy two cameras ... or buy one camera with both in it ... but you probably oughta break out your piggy bank cause it's not likely gonna go for the same $$$. BTW, the Pentax K-1 doesn't have 4K video either (again, around $2K).
BUT, calling it "insane" about an entry FF (with articulating display) for the $$$ not having top spec video, just seems a little much ... go spend your $$$ on what you want, but wanting a Ferrari for the price of a Chevy or saying its insane to have a truck with ... OMG ... a manual transmission (when automatic transmission are so prevalent) is insane.

The wheel works pretty well for me ... I actually find it to have better control than the joystick for me. But, I reckon it's what you're used to, or will to become used to. You can still move points by feel, so I'm good with it (actually prefer the wheel).
Now, take away the wheel AND no joystick ... yeah, that sucks. But fortunately, that's not the case with the 6D2.

I have no need for any video in my DSLR, 4K or otherwise.
There is also a cost to 4K. Encoding at higher speed requires far more MIPS, memory bandwidth and power. While it is possible that 1080p is a "soft" limit, it could very well also have been some amount of cost cutting.

Dhphoto and Arbitrage echo my sentiments well: if we are looking at camera purchases in terms of ROI, the return is generally terrible for three main reasons:
(1) Mid and top level Canon camera bodies are grossly overpriced, and IMO so is 6DII.
(2) Generation-to-generation camera improvements are usually miniscule, or even irrelevant for still photography.
(3) If the shooting technique remains constant, then the results are often invariant of camera upgrades.
Keeping our old gear, as well as focusing our efforts on betterment of our photography skills, gives us a much higher return than any fancy new camera we might buy.
I do not desire to tinkle on your 6DII festivities, just offering a counter point to those that might wish to consider it....Show more →
