The pro and cons have been laid out, 15Bit did a good comparison on page 42. Take a look, and tell me why you would take the 6DII over the 5DIII? If it's just for a small improvement in the sensor then it seems you would be flocking to Sony considering their sensors are kicking the chit out of Canon's sensors.

No, when the D850 comes out, they'll be flocking to Nikon ...

Same sensors, better tweaking for better performance, better glass by a country mile.

I went through these same woes 2.5 years ago ... waiting for the 7D to update for almost 8 years.

When the 7D II came out, with a pale, sickly sensor ... I spent 2 months apologizing for Canon also ... trying to figure out 'a way' where the inferior specs (already antiquated on the day of release) could be justified.

However, I eventually rubbed the Canon Stardust out of my eyes, sold my Canon lenses, and bought the D810. Even 3 years old, it is still better than Canon's best.

I was quickly rewarded with the D500's release ... an APS-C camera that actually was the best damned APS-C camera on the market ... something the 7D II could never say, even on Day 1 of its release.

There will be many who keep apologizing for Canon ... but many will also eventually want to puke on the excuses ... and simple dump their gear and move on.

The reality is the 6D Mark II is exciting to no one. It was already left way behind the day of its release.

It is an embarrassment of a model, in today's market, and no amount of "searching for excuses" will change this fact.

I wouldn't be buying either as I already have a 5D4 and 1DX2. But if I had to choose one or the other I would weigh the pros and cons as I mentioned and as outlined by 15Bit. I would likely choose the 5D3 because of the joystick which is why I sold my 80D.....I really can't function without that anymore. If I was choosing on sensor alone it would be 6D2. Again, it all depends what matters to each individual but the 5D3 is not a guaranteed must buy over a 6D2.

6DII no joystick? Ouch, that would be another deal breaker for me.

Strange comments on the 7d2, it has some of the lowest low ISO read noise, and does well at high ISO, to the point that it still beats out the 80D. In fact I would almost put the 7d2 against the 6d2.

Even the AF system has more f/8 points in the 6D2 than the 5D3 and it may actually be better than the 5D3's system overall with newer processors.

That's the half full bottle... (the half empty bottle being to look at the 6D2 AF as a single huge central AF point permeated with lots of intermediate gaps :-)))

The 6D has noticeable more AF spread (at least left-right) than the 6D2.

No it doesnt.

As far as I could tell the left and right point extension was pretty much identical between 6d and 6d2.

Now they have chosen to compromise IQ , either to sell more higher priced cameras or to reduce production costs or whatever.

That fact is the biggest surprise here. We now know canon can do better.

Yes, and that's the difference: until recently, Canon buyers resigned because Canon couldn't do better.

Still many people on this forum see the 6D2 as a new potential success. I'm not so sure because new into-FF upgraders are aware of this intentional crippling (and likely not much invested in EF glass) while existing 6D owners have none to very little (if any) incentive to upgrade.

Time will tell... but there is not a lot of mindless people out there with $2K to spend. Maybe the 24-70 F4L or 35/2.0 price crashes will soon not be among the best Canon records ever :-)

And it is difficult to understand this move from Canon taking into account that their customers are among the most DR-conscious in the world...

Ah, you know we'll be ripping on the D850 when it comes out on here too. No camera can satisfy everyone - heck, whether or not it has an articulating screen will be enough to rile up half of us on here. And then of course we'll all be talking about how it'll probably have oil/AF/shutter issues and how we should wait a year before buying it or somesuch.

Canon and Nikon both do stuff we don't like. Granted, the 6DII seems to be an unusually large blunder for Canon. We don't really expect Canon to be at the front lines of tech, but this is a bit extreme.

Still, I wouldn't make any predictions about Nikon until they show us the goods. They've already shown that they're willing to remove features from a line (D7500) and that they're willing to price their cameras higher than the competition, even with pretty much identical features (D5).

So fair to be optimistic about Nikon's upcoming cameras, but I wouldn't express that optimism on here too much lest it bites you in the future.

I think that somebody measured it 12.5mm vs 14.5mm

That's not much, but the 6D AF is generously placed for the 1/3 and 2/3 positions... visually at least, this seems only "almost" for the 6D2 (ok, maybe the higher viewfinder coverage has also something to do).

I dont know who measured it or how.

eyeballing and playing with both at the same time and comparing results showed me there is no real difference

apart from the outer points on the 6d2 actually work well.

Geoff, you know that the user you are replying to is unlikely to ever purchase a Canon camera, so anything you say to him is only going to encourage pointless arguing. He doesn't have much of a reputation to worry about protecting.

This is what I got by overlaying the two in PS.....all I know is I'd take the 6D2 everyday of the week over the 6D if this is close to accurate.

Well maybe I am the exception but I have been using a 40D for years just waiting for it fizzle...which it has....and I have been collecting glass...L glass...I am ready to take the dive into FF......of course I will only be shooting jpg and could care less about PP......ha! I cannot wait to dig into the raw files and hopefully I know enough by now about exposure and light that I won't be trying to push the shadows to discover something hidden.

If you are out there with a xx/xxxD and ef-s 18-55 and 55-250 or something, perhaps a nifty fifty, and decide on FF the cost to switch to another brand is no barrier at all.

Disagree.
The D810 was a grand slam for its class.
The D500 was a grand slam for its class.
Utterly peerless when they came out.

The D5 was almost a grand slam, not quite, but still the best high-ISO/AF camera in its class, and at least as good as its primary competitor, the 1DxII.

By contrast, the 6D II will already be blown away by every one of its peers before the first one ships ...

Missing one or two things, while coming out with major advancements, is acceptable. But just coming out as a no-perk, already-outdated nothing ... as an "upgrade" is inexcusable. For a FF camera to get its ass kicked by even low-end APS-Cs ... it's not even worth another post discussing after this. Especially at that price point.

Every Canon 6D owner, looking to upgrade, has to be disappointed, hurt, and confused

Pricing this dud at $1,999 is (literally) adding insult to injury. Canon is insulting its followers' intelligence.

I wouldn't buy the D7500. It's not a joke, like the 6D II, but if I wanted the speed I'd save a little more and just get the D500. If I didn't care about the speed, I'd get the D7200 (which is better for macro, really).

With cameras like the 1Dx II and the D5, they at least are highly-competitive. Both are at the top of their game. Both are exceptional. You're essentially splitting hairs discussing their differences.

But the 6D II is a blatant dog ... especially at $2,000 ... are you freaking kidding me?

There are some really capable camera options, from $1200 to $2,000, that trounce the 6D II.

With the quality products Nikon keeps coming out with, I am very confident the D850 will be worth buying immediately

Time to go back over to the Nikon forum ... my condolences to those who were hoping to be excited by the 6D II

No, just overlayed them based on the black border. So it won't be exact. I'm sure the 6D's two extreme left and right horizontal outer points do extend out more but if you want to get anywhere near the rule of thirds the 6D2 looks to be the way to go. Not to mention all the other AF upgrades it has. I did a previous overly of the 5D4 and 6D2 and there you can really see the 5D4/1DX2 advantage.

Here is the rough 1DX2 vs 6D2 overlay....

Exactly, that shows nothing. You have 2 bodies shot with ISO amplification and 2 with post-processing brightening. ISO amplification will always seem cleaner than bringing up ISO 6 stops. There isn't a body that is 6 stops ISO invariant.
