This is from a complete and correct set of files courtesy of dpreview.
More later ... still crunching data ...
Where did the images come from? From a released production model or from another pre-production model?

Bill I really appreciate your time and work on this project.
Never thought matching or exceeding DR of the 5D4 sensor made business sense. However I expected a new sensor to be measurably better than the original 6D.

You're welcome. Rusty1 wrote:

You are not alone.
It appears they put other priorities ahead of low ISO dynamic range.
There are some nice new features.

Thanks Bill for the new curves! Do you usually average across several body samples? And if yes, do you observe any sort of deviations? Did you have the chance to do it for the 6D2 (probably no for the moment)?

Not at the moment.
In the past I have found very little variation between multiple cameras of the same model.

The only feature of the 5DIV swaying me is the great dynamic range and AF point spread, but is it weird that I feel like the tilty screen will get more practical use than either of those things? Found myself a few times tonight out shooting where it would have come in handy.
Thanks for all of the good feedback on the real world impact of these DR differences. As disappointed as I am in Canon for not at least getting close to 5DIV dynamic range, I think I'll end up opting for the 6D2 over the 5DIV.

When comparing the AF point spread, is the viewfinder coverage % being taken into account? The 6D2 could be even worse than it looks when factoring the 98% viewfinder vs. the 100% viewfinders.
Final numbers posted. Basically the same performance as the old 6D.
Chris
Showing the same "shape" with the zig-zig / stairstep signature vs. a curve. Looks like ISO 160 is top dog ... and the 1 stop intervals of 320 & 640 seem to be at the top of their respective step. Reminiscent of the Kodak SLR/C base ISO 160 (but with much better high ISO).
ISO 160 ... roughly .5 EV below the 80D at the same ISO 160.

In any case, in my 10 years of testing this has not once made a difference.
There's always a "first time" ... but, I wouldn't advise holding your breath while hoping for it.

I can't possibly imagine that Canon would not have cameras on hand a month before shipping that are complete 100% in hardware and mostly in firmware. I'm pretty certain it would be near impossible to go from "still trying to figure out the sensor design" to "shipping to customers" in such a short period of time. Nor would I expect them to just grab an old prototype out of the trash bin and send it out to reviewers.
I think many people just assumed Canon would make the DR better on the 6D2 and are holding out any hope they can get that it will still be better despite the evidence so far. Maybe Canon isn't able to make their dual pixel, on-chip ADC FF sensors cheap enough to fit into the 6D price range.

When I look at the specs of the mark II and when I look at my photo style, many of new things are not really useful for me. Landscapes, portraits, etc so no need of the new screen, the 6,5 fps or the 45 points.
The only left which could make me to move on the mark II is the sensor. But with what you show here about DR, I would only have a 6mp improvement in fact. I Will not do better photos with this unfortunately...
I like Canon, but here they did really weird choices for a 2100€ camera.

It just seems so weird to see the 6D2 perform like such a different sensor (i.e. the stairstep where higher ISO has more DR than than a lower ISO) from the likes of the 80D / 5D4 / 1DX2 ... yet, be of the same sensor family (i.e. pdaf, etc.).
p.40 #14 · Official: Canon Announces the EOS 6D Mark II
But the 6D also has that same step shape.

Understood that the original 6D has that attribute. The 70D did as well, but the 80D does not. The original 6D and 5D3 have almost identical shapes / values with the strong stairstep. The 5D4 and 80D no long have that strong stairstep characteristic. So, it would seem to follow as a reasonable anticipation that the 6D2 would follow suit of the 5D3>5D4, 70D>80D, etc. in going from the 6D>6D2 and NOT retain the shape / values of the original 6D.

Just an odd situation that leaves you
The intermediate ISO behavior is less pronounced on some of the cameras that you list; but it is still there.
As far as the 6D and 6D Mark II; they are almost identical, including intermediate ISO behavior.

Mind you, it's not necessarily "bad". It just seems odd that the "rising tide lifts all boats" ... isn't lifting this one (yet).
Yea, the 6D took (and still takes) fantastic pictures, but from these results, it appears as though the 6D2 might be built on the same sensor tech as the original. Which really just seems odd since the 6D is 5 years old now. Maybe top of canon tech then, but bottom of the barrel now? I wonder if that was just how they were able to keep the price at the same point (well actually lower).
Anyways, I am still holding out for final reviews, but I am not expecting them to say anything different. As nice as the features and ergonomics are, its not $2k better than the original 6D for me without a better sensor.
