Waaaa, someone who doesn't preach the end of the world over this?
IS THIS A SIGN OF THE ACTUAL END?
Hah, you know, I have made some comments here that I am disappointed about these recent findings, but I think most (well hopefully most) of us are level headed enough to realize that even though we might be disappointed at the lack of improvements in DR, we can still admit that it looks like a very nice camera. In fact I still think it looks great. Just for me, as a current 6D owner, Im not sure the cost of upgrading is justified without any real DR improvement. Again, for me. I know it will sell great and will serve people extremely well.

Why wouldn't you buy a 5D4? It is a good compromise for landscapes with 30 MP, decent reach (similar to 1D IV) for wildlife, and good high ISO as well.

I am not who you were responding to, but I know that for me, especially with this news, getting the 5D4 sounds like maybe it would be a better choice since it has more resolution, and has that improved DR that I was hoping for. At the same time, the 5D4 is too much of a camera for me. It has a ton of features that I just don't care about or want and is actually missing something that I was really hoping to get back that I used to have on my 60D, the screen. Plus it is significantly more. So it will certainly do everything I want, but I am just not sure its really worth the premium for me either.

So what this all means is Canon really screwed themselves by making the original 6D IQ so good. They made it so good, that many people will expect the 6D Mk II to do the same thing in regards to the improvement of the IQ in regards to the current 5D series. People are expecting now to have a camera that is "entry level" to have an IQ that's better than the current premium line of camera's, just because the camera is newer and the predecessor to this camera was better than the 5D series at the time.
I just see too many people analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of this new camera as having an expectation of the IQ to be better than the camera's that cost much more. The IQ will come out in the wash soon enough. Sure, I'd like to see a better IQ out of this camera than the 5D Mk IV, but as long as it's a measurable, to my eye, not some specification number, increase over the 6D, I will be satisfied with the results.

I'm with you on this. The news here makes me really tempted to pick up a used 5D4 instead of the new 6D2. I like the more compact size of the 6D2, the articulating screen, and obviously the price point. But this is making it a hard call...

It is interesting to compare the DR response shapes of the older gen 7DII / 6D / 5DIII sensors with the newer gen 80D / 5D4 / 1DXII sensors. The newer gen sensors have a much more linear response curve - obviously Canon have some new secret sauce to boost the low ISO performance.
At risk of being labelled a "complainer" here, i actually don't think it is unreasonable to be surprised if a fairly premium new camera body is released with older gen sensor tech. Still, we don't know for sure yet, so i am not coming to any firm conclusions before an actual production body gets to the DXO guys and a set of results properly comparable with those of other cameras is obtained.

Kia ora Rob,
Thanks for sharing your experience and files. If it is not a big ask one more favor please.
A shadow lifting comparison set. ISO 100. Indoor or outdoor. 6D, 6DII and 5D IV ( if you have these cameras, of course). Underexpose by 4 to 5 stops and then lift shadows. You may have to use DPP's 3 stop and more in ACR/Lightroom.
I am not doubting cgarcia's results, but would love it see actual shadow lifting comparison with our eyes. Impatient bunch here.

Well, the EXIFs are from the 6D and 6D2, no mix-up there. But the 6D2 seems to be trailing well behind the 6D.
I will also remark that these results are not dependent on the scenes, only on the amount of noise in the masked portions of the sensor...
I verified on several sub-sections as well and I am getting roughly the same values and trends. And every histogram has a nice gaussian shape.

I have the 80D and I really don't want to buy a more expensive camera with less base-ISO DR than what I already have.
What do you expect from a low light body?
You will not be able to SEE any DR difference in any print or exposure if you compare your 80D base ISO pic with a 6Ds/6D IIs base Iso shot. You will only realise that your 80D even at base ISO produces more noise. And watch how crisp the FF image is compared to the crop sample and how excellent the colors are rendered even at hig ISO.
You will already SEE a difference at ISO 200 or 400 where 6D (and so should 6D II) clearly wins. At 800 and 1600 itīs even more significant. At ISO 6400 I would stop to use the 80D!. Noise looks nearly like 6Ds ISO 25k ( I expect this to be 6D IIs ISO 40k):
Play with it. You will understand, why in my opinion a DR difference about 1.5 stops at base ISO is overrated. If you need a camera that offers same ISO 100 DR like your 80D, do not by the 6D/6D II. If you want a camera that blows away your 80D in IQ in any way that is visible, purchase one of them. But be aware that you might not use your 80D any longer except for reach.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to insinuate you're misleading people. Just can't think of any reason why they would miss the mark so widely on this. Going to wait for testing on more examples and hope that this particular camera is a dud, but it's really not a good look so far.
If this is all correct and not a camera firmware error, I can't even this of any strong points about this camera over say the 80d, let alone the competition

Are there typically official test and reviews out before preorders start shipping? All of this info is a bit disconcerting. Seems not only is it not improved, it's actually a step back from the last generation. What in the world are they thinking?
