As far as I am concerned Canon did put a foot wrong with the AF point spread - same gimping as other models have seen - but overall it should be a very good camera that will represent very good value for money when prices fall.

Seriously, there are better options when you are shooting video.

And what FF camera would you compare this camera too?

The 3 year old D750, equals that pretty close. Congrats canon it only took your 5 years to come up with a camera 3 years behind the entry level nikon.

The 3 year old A7ii, nope still behind that camera.

How about compare it to the specs of the full frame A7iii thats going to be announced in November?

The 6dii might not have been a bad camera if it was released 3 years ago.

At what point is the D750 entry level when the d610 exists?

I'm not sure the AF spread is as bad as people are making out - but widely spread AF points on a FF camera are seemingly difficult to implement. Comparing to the 5D4 there is an important point to consider - the 6D2 points are all cross type whilst the horizontally outermost columns on the 5D4 are not. So whilst the 5D4 does have a wider spread, in terms of cross-type points it's not as much wider in the horizontal as it would appear from just looking at the basic AF point diagram. In the vertical, the 5D4 is definitely better, but it is in the horizontal that i personally feel the cramping.

True but the 5D4's outermost AF points still work at f/8, so even if not x-type they won't be useless especially for stills shooting, the next columnin are x-type to f/5.6 like the 6DII's outer most points IIRC

In DSLRs the accuracy of AF points is dependent on the amount of light hitting the AF module and because all lenses suffer from vignetting there comes a point in the image circle that the reduction in light does not allow accurate AF processing. At the point that the manufacturer considers the AF is to unreliable they do not extend the AF coverage further. This is why the focus of the APS-C 7D2 occupy a greater proportion of the sensor than on the 5D - it is about the same physical dimension but larger proportion of the sensor area.
There are two other factors: I can imagine that the stronger AF processing engine on the 5DIV would enable the AF to work on a slightly wider circle than the 6D2, but also if Canon decide the target market of the 6D2 are less discerning than the target market for the 5DIV they may change the limit within the image circle where AF is considered 'acceptable'.

+1. Canon forums are always like that. There is definitely a pressure for participants to validate the recycled features in Canon's "new" products, and those who point out that the features suck are male anatomy or trolls. It's a sad devotion to mediocrity based entirely on brand loyalty over rational evaluation of features.

Yes, it should be obvious that only the most sophisticated and dedicated people will be able to compare specifications and find out what's missing, then spend their time complaining that no product is good enough for them. Only mediocre people will understand that everything has a cost, then buy what is available and live with that.

The A7s II is $2,600 and the A7s is $2,000.

Interesting note in reading the description about the 4K video on the A7s ... ummm, it does NOT record 4K video internally, only HD. In order to record 4K video, it needs an external recorder.

Hmmmm, sounds like the FF + 4K video camera for $2,000 is a bit of a myth still. I'm not a video guy these days (long, long ago @ Beta / VHS), but that sounds like having to buy another piece of equipment ( $$$ for an external 4K recorder) to actually achieve the 4K objective

I tested the A7S. It is just a joke to enhance ISO capability by lowering resolution to a 10 year old standard and selling it high price as innovation. Next to this, reaction time of the viewfinder like AF was so horrible slow, that it is impossible to use for my needs. And the EVF is still horrible flickering. The only nice thing for me is that one can watch the shot through the EVF without the necessity to change to reading glasses. What I meanwhile have to do. :-(.

EVF might become an interesting solution (for me) in the next or overnext generation. Up to today I would always prefere a reflex body with a cristal clear viewfinder. That is imo the biggest minus with 6D II. That they changed to an electronic overlay. But lets wait for some results in high ISO IQ.

Please don't feel you are obliged to continue posting here to us Canon sheep. We won't take it personally if you leave.

The battered spouse simile is entirely inappropriate i think. Hopefully it is not representative of your usual expression of opinions.

Hi, Ralph.
What do you mean by "the biggest minus with 6D II"? Its VF is cristal clear and highly customizable it terms of display ifno. It may be adjusted to show almost nothing. Check user's manual p. 487-488, 79-82. The link is available on page 17 by Rusty1 (thanks indeed).

Yes, but not nothing all the time. According to the manual it flashes stuff up in the field of view when you work some of the controls no matter how you set it.

The 6D2 does have 27 point support ("+" type vs. "X" type center) for f/8 for various lense / TC combinations (pages 151-152 in the manual)

Stick to the merits of the camera ... leave the "you people" out of it.

Telling folks that they are making bad decisions or that they are not "normal thinking" / "battered spouses" because you know how much "superior" something else is isn't appropriate. Present your case as objectively, strongly and empassioned as you can, challenge one another to help foster growth and understanding, share your perspective and opinion ... but, please keep an eye to retaining the respect for and dignity of your fellow FM'ers in the process.

Unfortunately, you seemingly mistake people challenging faulty logic, and incomplete perspective as being somehow "inferior" to your position and opinion or of a lesser mindset. You like things different from others ... super, duper, cooper ... just don't rudely, insult your fellow FM'ers by calling them not normal thinking person, battered spouse or crazy for thinking such as they do. I can assure you that the minds of your fellow FM'ers are just fine (some of the finest minds in the photographic world, actually) ... even, if their opinions, perspectives, wants and needs are significantly different from yours.

Much of our beloved craft is "horses for courses" ... just because others want to run a different course, does not make them such as you have espoused. So, please take the "Canon is evil, Canon is crap." mantra somewhere else ... or at least leave the Canon users are somehow "inferior" in their thinking out of the forum.

Each and every member has a "Fred ordained" expectation that we conduct ourselves with dignity and respect for one another as fellow members of Fred's wonderful and beloved site. This is the cornerstone of FM being FM.

Good point about quality (or lack thereof) for the future.
I remember when 640 x 480 was a waste of space to people who thought 320 x 240 was more than adequate. I always try to maximize resolution and quality for the future. I got the PowerShot G1 15+ years ago because it had raw and the comparable Nikon didn't. I can process those files again and end up with much better results now. Never skimp on the master or source files. :-)

As a father of two young kids I wonder about this as well, but I think we have mostly reached a plateau in image quality. 15 years ago was 2002 and digital was still in infancy. It was time before affordable DSLRs.
The quality of DLSR went up a lot in those days. I went from 10D-->20D-->40D-->5dm2 in 5 years (2003-2008). Well, I still have the 5Dm2 as my only full frame. This 6dm2 might be the second one.
In my opinion for stills if you happen to get the shot (e.g. you nailed exposure, focus,...) then output from 5Dm2 is sufficient for 99% of users even today. What the new cameras allow you to do is to nail the shot more often and with less effort or correct mistakes better in post.

As far as video, I think good quality 1080p footage from today will be very watchable even in 20 years. Sure, 4K will look nicer but the extra effort in processing and shooting (currently with crop modes,...) is not worth it. At least not for family video. My guess is that if I had 5dm4 I would still shoot mostly in 1080p.

4k is irrelevant to taking stills so as far as I am concerned it would mean the camera would have a functionality I would not use. I would not say the camera would be better without 4K (it sounds like you are building straw men instead of having a sensible debate?) but I find it unnecessary.

Sony has it? Whoopy-do. Sony has no f4 super telephotos which makes their flagship A9 pretty useless to me yet for some strange reason I do not feel the need to go onto Sony forums and insult them because of it.
