There's no doubt that the 28E is a solid performer in many ways. I wouldn't hesitate purchasing one IF the FL is right for you.

The comparison above is just the bokeh itself that I was up against.
The main and biggest reason for the switch back to the 35G is the FL itself.
I fell in love with the 35G after several weddings and engagements and it quickly became my favorite FL for weddings, as I mentioned here
Now, I TRIED to love the 28mm FL. I really did. I just couldn't adapt to it.
For the most part it was too wide and the compression just wasn't there.
I don't know what it is about that 35mm that just draws me in... I love the FL!!
If and when Nikon releases a 35E, I will be ALL OVER IT, even if it cost 2.5k ...Show more →
I totally agree. Your shots with the 35/1.4G reflect your style and show the intimacy which is not as easy with a 28mm. I have always preferred the 50 to 58mm and I find it hard to love 35mm. If it is not 50mm I prefer the 25 to 28mm range and the 24mm is even too wide for me. The problem with 28mm lenses there have been very few available and the 28E looks to be superb. I do wish they had a really well corrected 28/1.8E, lighter/smaller for travel. For now I am using my 24 Art on the D810 while we are in Spain

One of few reasons I returned my 28E lens...
35mm f/1.4G vs 28mm f/1.4E, see below. Worth the 1k difference? Naw...
I'd rather buy 775 McChickens for that money.
Hhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, where have I heard this before?

Thanks for the samples guys. The lens looks great...sharp, and the falloff is smooth.
But the samples confirm that I'll definitely be sticking with the 35mm 1.4. 35mm just has that extra compression over the 28mm focal length, and the much lower perspective distortion means I can get more intimate with framing than with a 28mm.
But jokes aside, try a fast 20mm. I love the Sigma 20mm f/1.4 Art, but I know your aversion to third party glass, so give the nikon 20 1.8 a try. Either way, the 20mm is the perfect complement to the 35. During the party time of receptions, shooting the 20mm+35mm on two bodies feels as natural as shooting 35+85,
Honestly, it's as ground breaking for me as my 35mm was to separate a subject while still being able to fit so much into the composition. Rent it for a weekend and see.

If you look in the Nikon 20mm f/1.8g official image thread, I am fairly certain you'll find some contributions from @Elijah. IIRC

Great side by side example comparing the 35/1.4G.
Have to respectfully-disagree.
It's a clashing image (over-exposed in some areas, under-exposed in others) that really just isn't interesting with either lens ... and in no way shows the unique character of the 28 mm f/1.4 E ...

I still think if you're only wanting *one* wide angle, the 28E is the best all-around choice if you mesh with the focal length. I don't have the restraint to only have one wide angle.
Has anyone here said screw it and bought all the 1.4s just to have them all and never miss them? I've bought the 35, 58, 85 all twice and now I just bought my 24 back a week after selling it when I saw the guy I sold it too decided it was too wide and had it up for sale. I'm now selling my 85 for a 3rd time as I now have the 105. I don't think I'll miss it now.
My prime kit is now 24, 35, 58, 105 and 135/2.
I had pre-ordered the 28 but canceled before it shipped as I couldn't justify the price after deciding I didn't want to part with 24 or 35. The 28 seems a bit sharper in the comparison from Elijah but I just love the rendering of the 35 in the photos I've taken, Probably my favorite prime right now.

WOW!
Are you like my twin or something?! I'M GOING THROUGH THE SAME EXACT THING!
Had 24, 35, 58, 105 (all f/1.4) about 6 weeks ago, sold the 24 + 35 in favor of the 28E when it came out.
Didn't click with the FL and sent it back, re-bought a 35mm f/1.4G and now I'm on a hunt for a 24mm f/1.4G again!
Well probably not twins but I think it's a lineup that makes sense. I think you can take these focal lengths in the Nikon lineup : 20, 24, 28, 35, 50, 58, 85, 105 and chose every other one and have a nice prime setup. With us both starting at 24, it makes sense to have the 24-35-58-105. Then as a bonus add a 135 or 180 if needed. But I could totally see going with a 20-28-50-85-135 kit too.
If you have the money, just get them all and you can pick a lens how you feel that day.
Money in the bank doesn't bring you much. Depreciation/taxes is more or less the same as lenses (especially if you have a business), but you have more fun with the lenses.
Sadly I don't have the money to have them all.
