I shot full time like ten years ago and couldn't justify my expensive glass... can't publicly (online) state what I do but it's allowed me to pick up some fun glass! 😇👍🏻
*after reading this it totally sounds like I'm implying the following: 😭😭😭

Makes me wonder what you do for a living to justify owning both lenses for a "hobbyist"
Getting today my 28 1.4 and can't wait to work with it. Sold my beloved 24 1.4 after I tryed 28 in the shop.
This month I'm pure man....bought D850 , Nikkor 105 1.4 and 28 1.4 . Now my prime collection is complete: 28,58,105 and 200 F2 VRII.

Congrats!! You're the one who will make this lens shine the most in this thread!
When I asked the other day if you'd tried the 28mm 1.4E, I wasn't trying to cost you $2000! Sorry! 😬

I have considered doing exactly as you describe
I still have the 24 1.4
35 1.4
58 1.4
85 1.4
70 to 200 VR2
200F2
I have been considering pairing everything right down, but I can't make up my mind on a Body though?
Probably a conversation for another thread though
If those who are on the fence about the 28mm could consider this, I think it would be wise.
If you go from 24/35 to 28, and you have a d850 d810, you can crop. even without cropping, it's just a half step different perspective. I really don't miss 35 at all. But obviously there are folks who would/do.
so don't sell anything.
put the 28 on a credit card, and get it from adorama.
use it for a couple weeks and then decide. you can always return it within a month.
I am at 20 28 50 85 for primes, I just prefer 50 a lot, and 85 a lot... or I would keep my 58, but I decided to sell it.
I also have 70-200E and 24-70E for weddings, which is nice. the 24-70 is usually on my assistant, I haven't touched it all year. But the 70-200E is STELLAR.
For intimate sessions, I go 28/85. For family portrait sessions where it's more than just one kid, I switch from 85 to my 70-200. 28/70-200
For casual, when I'm with my family and carrying more than just photo gear, I bring out the 20 1.8g and 50 1.4g if I'm going to be inside, or the 50/85 if I'm going to be outside. the 20/50 combo, is obviously quite small and light. If I am going to a festival or something, I just bring a 50mm. It's my favorite "only have one prime" on FF. I can NOT wait for a 50 1.4e. and that will make my 28e 50e 70-200e the best holy trinity ever created. and I would probably sell my 50 1.4g and 85 1.4g when that happens.
Since many of you have the 58 and love it, I'll go here:
24 35 58
vs
20 28 58
I see the 20 28 58 as more versatile, plus having the best WA on the market. with the beautiful bokeh you want and deserve, excellent flare resistance. sigma art sharpness, which is almost essential on the d850 :P
investment wise, it's similar as the 20 is cheap, so it's not as bad as you think.
for wedding shooters, the 28 is just sublime for groups. you won't have to challenge yourself with regard to which WA (24/35) to use.
cheers
It's was actually good advice Blakehfreeman, thank you. I need the best lenses for D850 and I don't care about how much it cost if i like it.
I also own 24-70 (First version)and 70-200 VRii but I need them only on events, concerts or weddings. When I shoot for my projects, studio I only use prime lenses.
one of my first image with 28 1.4 and D850:
I think I'm ready for my darn D850 to ship!
Current kit:
- Nikon 28mm 1.4E
- Sigma 50mm 1.4A (sold my 58mm 1.4G after owning both a few months. P.S. Would GLADLY buy a Nikon 58mm 1.2(?!)E/1.4 if they released it and bumped the reliability and sharpness a bit)
- Nikon 105mm 1.4E
- Nikon 200mm 2.0VRII
- Nikon 70-200 2.8E
Bummed! Roger (lensrentals.com) said they won't be getting 10 copies in (due to low demand) and because of that he won't be testing the lens on his optical bench :-/. Bummer! We all need to convince ten people to rent this lens so Roger buys more so he can test them .
