The focusing abilities of this camera are leaving a big smile on my face. I took this today in mid-swing with a very shallow DOF (FE 85 1.4 GM). Color me impressed.

I am so far very pleased with the rendering of the A9 - seems similar to that of the A7S in this kind of situation. I will be testing sports and portraits this week and I'm anxious to see how it performs in both situations when compared to my a6300 and A7rII respectively.

I went to see a friends band the other night. All of these are with the electronic shutter.

Coming from the original A7 I'm pretty happy with the A9.

Thanks.

First round of soccer portraits with the A9 successful. The new viewfinder is really fantastic for reviewing. I do have to make some adjustments to my button layout and custom menu coming from the A7RII, but functionally there were no hiccups other than having to disable the touchscreen - when I would flip up the screen it would often switch to touch-mode and I had to back out of it. Was a pain, so I won't be using it very much I don't think.
I have completed two identical sessions of two hours each - first with the A7RII, second with the A9. Had to change batteries at 1.5 hours with the A7RII, but the A9 still had 57% remaining on the first battery when I got home. I like that

Perusing this thread looking for a9 images of things moving-birds/sports. Only I saw in a cursory catch up of the thread was K-H's hummingbirds ?
Am I right in guessing the birders with the a9 are waiting for the FE 100-400 ??
Regardless, any known links to BIFs with the a9 would be appreciated.

Finally got to test the camera in a sports setting. Just WOW!
My A7RII and a6300 are basically out the door as soon as I have the time. I have everything I need with the A9 and then some. 20 FPS with no blackout and that amazing autofocus bring my sony gear to a new level.

70-200 GM + 1.4 extender (20 fps):

K-H, like I mentioned earlier, I think you are the only one capturing anything moving with this body. Thanks for the links!

You are welcome MM (Robert right?)

I am resigned to the fact that the silent shutter in the E-M1.2 isn't fast enough for Hummingbirds in Flight.
In contrast the silent shutter of the A9 in almost all HIF situations is.
The blackout free silent shutter of the A9 is a revelation indeed.
Going back to the blackout silent shutter of the E-M1.2 is such a throwback.
But of course the superb Olympus tele lenses make me do it.

C-AF works fine on both the E-M1.2 and A9 - no focus hunting.
C-AF tr doesn't work for me at all on the E-M1.2.
C-AF tr is much better on the A9. Good enough for my purposes? Maybe, I don't know yet. Need more experimentation.

Cheers, Karl-Heinz.

Yes Karl-Heniz! Nice to meet you Robert it is.
Well I might be adding the alpha9 but I won't be leaving the M1ii anytime soon.
The M1ii is still a camera I don't mind carrying all day long and at my age even the
small difference in weight between an a9 and a M1ii matters

I'm just biding my time until I see results with the FE100-400+FE1.4TC and I think the release
is one month away.

Many thanks Robert. Neither will I stop using my E-M1.2 or my E-M5.2 for the matter.
Of course the E-M1.2 is more versatile, supporting both FT and MFT lenses.
Its AF focusing is clearly faster and also more precise (by focusing better on the intended subject) than that of the E-M5.2.

Clearly the Sony A7r.2 and A9 are complementary to my OM-D cameras, the latter having currently better native long tele lenses.
When using the FE 70-300/4.5-5.6 OSS lens on my A7r.2 @ 300mm I thought it was sort of okay, but never really impressed.
I bought it simply to have a native tele lens for my A7r.2 and in particular an OSS lens for my IBIS-less a6300.
Since using the FE 70-300/4.5-5.6 OSS lens on the A9 extensively it has grown on me a lot.
It's relatively fairly inexpensive, slow, small, and light but capable of great IQ on the A9.
I find that combination delivering useable images all the way to ISO 25,600. Simply amazing IMHO.
I am also a fan of the TechArt Pro (TAP) autofocus adapter to use my manual only Leica M and even R lenses on the above mentioned 3 Sony cameras.
IBIS (OSS etc.), lighter gear and AF is certainly a requirement for me when shooting handheld. .

As you, of course I am looking forward for Sony to release longer native FE tele lenses.
The 100-400 and tele-converters you mentioned seem attractive. I hope for great IQ when used on the A7r.2 or A9.
I am also looking forward to a superb FE 400/2.8 lens that can be used with the 1.4x and 2x tele-converters. Of course I would use on a tripod.

Robert, it's wonderful to have choices.

Cheers, Karl-Heinz.

K-H I'm with you 99 percent.
The one percent not is the 400/2.8.
Would be way to heavy for me.
Given the prowess of the a9 and a7Rii with high ISO
400/4 would be fine for me.

Beautiful hummer shots by the way!
