Geoff thanks for doing that! Poof , my she-boss, uses LR. I'll ask her to walk through an image with me.
Now what to do when I'm focused on one Puffin and another shows up
Sony ILCE-9
FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS + 2X Teleconverter
ƒ/11.0 612.0 mm 1/3200 2000

Among the improvements in this version are improvements in auto focus performance and functionality:
*Improves tracking performance of moving subjects in AF-C mode
*Improves auto focus speed in low light
*Adds AF Track Sens as a selectable option for custom key settings
*Adds support for all focus areas when using LA-EA3 mount adaptor (Focus Area options added: Zone, Expand Flexible Spot, and Lock-on AF)

To improve the incredible, is incredible.
Can you two please beta-test the update for me....thanks
Not sure how they can improve tracking in AF-C but why not!!
I have a hope that the extra modes to the LA-EA3 might allow them on the MC-11 as it seems to be mimicking an A-mount adapter giving me SAM in the Exif.
I think I'll let Sony's Precision Camera update my firmware, and clean the sensor while it is there. I've been remiss on the hotshoe fix.
Another positive is if the a9 is gone a while I'll stop lying to myself that I can wield 6.4 pounds
Bought a used A9 a few weeks ago, love it. Also bought FE 100-400mm GM, love the fast AF speed. For extra reach, I used mc-11 with my sigma 150-600mm C, AF is fast enough. It even works with canon 1.4x III TC. These are using Sigma C + 1.4xIII

With post-processing. I have a quick and dirty way in LR to do it. I do a rough brush over the subject without Auto-Mask selected that overflows onto the background. Then I use the Erase Mask with Auto-Mask On to refine the edge back to the subject...with a clean background this works very well and all in all takes me about 30sec. Then I drag the Noise slider for the brush all the way to the left. Then I take the Luminance NR setting in the main Develop panel to about 75% and detail to 25%....that really knocks out the background but leaves the bird alone...it looks even cleaner before I export but the LR export sharpening adds some noise back to the background. Also important in the Develop module to properly Mask in your Sharpening to just the subject (Hold Option/Alt while adjusting the slider for the black and white view).
For the 4000 ISO one instead of that process (especially because there is more complicated background and a lot more flower to deal with, I just put the NR at about 50% but the Detail slider up to 100%...this usually preserves most of the subject detail but does fairly good NR on the background....and again proper sharpening Masking.
You should really try DxO Photolab for high ISO RAW. The PRIME NR engine leaves LR for dead and you can mask now. So mask background and apply NR, then allow PRIME to clean up the bird. Also C1 seems to be cleaner too than LR.

I've tried them all and I'm sure Prime NR is better....I don't find C1 to be any better....but no matter how much I try I can't get away from LR....I'm just so fast in LR, that every time I've tried to use C1 for a week, I don't last more than a day before going back to LR...mostly because I can't get my images to look any better and usually their output algorithms make the jpegs look worse despite trying multiple tweets to the output sharpening...LR output sharpening isn't perfect either but is simple to set and works fairly well....
I'm sure if I really dedicated myself to C1 or DxO, I would find some improvements in certain areas (NR for sure) but still I can't make the change....
Critter, remember the recall on the 'loose' hot shoe? I'm finally taking care of that. Like I use much flash on the a9=not, but someday I might, or sell it for the a7000 or the a9superR, or sell everything and use the RX10iv....
While there a sensor cleaning and maybe Precision will do the 'real' 3.0 update and not put the A7siii jibberish in
So meanwhile I'm shooting A7Riii and Lumix GM-5. The Tamron 28-75mm came and though rarely shooting at that focal length I'm getting familiar.
