OK gentlemen, maybe old news.
I finally had a chance to play with the EOS 400DOii + MC11 + A7Riii (a9 at Precision Camera) and I'd swear the focus is NATIVE after this latest MC-11 update. No matter the distance the focus was almost instantaneous. Probably old news but with all the salivation over what I can't lift (400/2.8) this is a huge revelation for me.

FWIW, I made a mention of thinking the focus hunting had improved after the 3.0 update with the MC-11...I gave my 400DOII/2xTCIII a bit of a workout on Sat morning and it still has the same issues of needing to be somewhere in the range to drive focus fast.
There is still a real possibility to miss critical shots if you aren't already somewhere in the zone of required focus....I still feel I need to move to all native glass for my birding work.
However, that test was with the 2xTC and it was raining so maybe I will try some more tomorrow with different variations and the weather will be better. It is awesome to have Zone mode and Expand Flexible Spot because I use those two modes a lot with my native 100-400GM...now I get to use them with my adapted lenses.
I did spend Canada Day shooting my adapted 24-70/4 lens and it was flawless using Eye-AF on my nephews and nieces!!...if I was buying into Sony from the start, I'd get a 24-105G but I just can't see any reason to go through the process of selling my Canon normal zooms (24-70/4, 16-35/4) as they work so well with the MC-11....

Raining, and I had only bare lens with the MC11...no TCs and totally bright sunny day.
Native all the way. Well in Newfoundland I was so happy with the results (for me) with the 2.0TC + 100-400GM I wondered aloud to Poof why am I even keeping the DOii. $12,000 and 6.5 pounds are two big reasons
This summer has been remarkably dead at the pond where I usually try to do some birding but this weekend I finally had the opportunity to do something else:
The tight shot and flight shot are outstanding, but you get a big thumbs up for the owl landscape from me! Way to be different and produce something unique. The landscape is such a compelling image... so many points of interest, ... dare I say, the shot is rather enchanting.

cheers,

Thanks Bruce...I agree that "enchanting" was exactly how I would describe that last shot. That is the spot I left him in when I left the park...I sat on a rock for 20mins hoping he would dive into the river for a crayfish as I'm told they do in this park...he was watching the water intently but never dove...
It was my work week and Sony rumors flying about the A7siii....trying to think the last time I shot any video
Well since a9 was at the doctors (Geoff, probably facing a 3 inch needle aimed at the inferior alveolar nerve) I've had to embrace the Riii. They are just so different ~a9 vs Riii~ but I enjoy them both. Heck I shot fireworks last night for the first time ever with the Oly M1ii and enjoyed that too
Here's another from Newfoundland. Just now in the processing getting to the ones shot in the snow, they're forthcoming.
Thanks Dennis.
The a9 has returned from Precision Camera with the hot shoe fix, a clean sensor and body, and the 3.0 firmware update without the reported anomalies.
Of course it's rainy and crap sky for the return.
It was almost new camera day so off in the gloomy rain to learn that Precision wiped all my custom settings Lesson learned there
