I'm just waiting for someone to complain about the size.

p.8 #2 · Pre-order Now! Sony FE 16-35/2.8 GM and FE 12-24/4 G

These two lenses cover my mostly used range for landscapes.
Currently I'm shooting CV 12/5.6, Loxia 21/2.8 and FE 16-35/4. My weaker range with my current set-up is 28-35mm where I usually step down to f/8. From the MTF, the FE 16-35/2.8 GM will perform better from 24mm until 35mm. (from wide-open)

My first test will be comparing the 16-35/4 (which I have a great copy) against the new GM.

I'm also considering the 12-24/4 because it's so compact and light, however the CV 12 is very light at half the weight and renders very nicely. This will be a tough choice and worth a comparison for me. A lens I would never replace is the Loxia 21/2.8 though.

A possible change for me would be:
CV 12, Loxia 21 and 16-35GM
OR
FE 12-24, Loxia 21 and 16-35GM. I gotta test them against each other and decide on pros and cons of the new choices.....

...so, yes, I'm pre-ordering both!

I'm really interested in the 16-35 but how does it compare to the Batis 18, Batis 25 and Loxia 21? It will be hard to give up these three excellent primes but if the 16-35 can compete with them in rendering and sharpness across the frame it would be a welcome addition. Also you have to wonder if Zeiss will come out with a 14 or 15 f/2.8 in a Loxia or Batis lens? If they do then it may make the 16-35 even more difficult to justify. Great to have so many choices!

Fred,

I'm in the same boat as you with these new lenses. I anxiously await your testing!

Those look like excellent additions. The 16-35mm f/2.8 is obviously something Sony just had to have in their lens lineup, no questions asked.

At first I didn't think it would make much sense for me, having the FE 16-35mm f/4 already, but we all know how that lens isn't exactly a world beater a 35 mm wide open, so the GM could be quite a bit more versatile if it delivers the goods at 35 mm and wide open at f/2.8. It is not only about a stop here, good sharpness and beautiful bokeh at 35 mm f/2.8 could be

It looks nice. But where I live it preorders for 2700 Euros. Quite a lot. I tried the Tamron 15-30 which is an excellent lens, too (950Euros) as is the Canon 16-35iii for 2200 Euros. I needs to be excellent to justify its price in my opinion.

Good because I can't decide either. Lol

Right now I'm short a 25mm. CV12,Batis 18 than 50 . Now I would sell my Sigma 24-35 for the 16-35 for sure but August I might forget about by than lol

Honestly the 16-35 fits me better for PR work. Maybe both

I would only replace my CV 12/5.6 with the new FE 12-24/4, if it has higher corner resolution. The CV 12/5.6 has great center/mid resolution, good flare resistance and high contrast. The FE 16-35/2.8 GM in place of the 16-35/4 seems to be a non-brainer for me as Sony really kept this ultra wide zoom compact and light. (Only about 150g heavier in comparison to the f/4)

So if we go with thought it's better on the wide side than you really get a great 12 and 16 plus more with both lenses. The overlap at 18mm just pick the best lens. Hmmm. June 10 maybe I'll start with the 12-24 and keep the Sigma 24-35 until the 16-35 comes out in August

Yea the dang 12-24 is tempting for sure. I could sell my 12 for it.

I would take 16-35/2.8 GM as main UWA option and support it with some additional super UWA prime when needed. 12mm is pretty extreme and HARD focal to use effecticely for other than distorting all verticals to high heavens.

Thus, good 12mm voigtlander could work. on DSLR side there is now IRIX option for such needs as well.

This is my plan if A9r / a7r3 pops up with suitable specs.

Keep your camera level

I see the main drawback is the filter situation, would most likely take 150mm filters to work, and the extreme angle would amplify vignetting a ton. The voigtlander cannot take more than a 3 stop ND without severe vignetting issues.

Yea I have more interest in the 16-35 selling the Sigma 24-35 and keeping my CV12 and Batis 18. Zooms I use for PR work and primes for the real shooting. Lol

I would rather take 17mm TS-E (or Nikkor 19mm PC-E) for perspective correction. Getting my camera level most likely requires use of 10m high ladder for typical subjects No thanks to cropping unless original resolution is something like 100MP and lenses deliver up to the edges.

The 12-24 June 10th. The 16-35 August 10th. August is a ways out.

I'm looking at both these lenses and I think a good thought pattern on purchasing is most of us have a prime or two we really like. See the 12-24 kind of leans toward the person that loves a 35mm prime and the 16-35 tends to benefit the 50mm prime shooter and you can even squeeze in a 12 prime

So one possibility is

12-24,35,85,135

Or

12,16-35,50,85,135

I'm also thinking Sony has been known for putting the good end of the zoom on the wider side.

Just some thoughts

Personally I have no problems with zoom and prime overlap. I have the 16-35 f4 along with the Loxia 21, Batis 25, Sony 28 and 35...and use all lenses depending on what I'm out photographing and my state of mind.

2700€ It has the same USA price than the 24-70... and that has a MSRP of 2500€ (although you can get it by 2100€...). I hope it really gets down... anyway... probably until next year I will not have no money to buy it... so no problem... price will go down a bit by them

I'm pretty impressed they kept the size and weight only slightly bigger/heavier than the current 16-35 /4. I expected it to be more like 800g or 900g.

Dunno about flare, but it may be related to incorrect register distance with adapted lens in case of smeared corners. Like fitting TS-E wide angles to R2 with stock adapters.

CA can be affected by register distance especially for floating element lenses, but flare is usually caused by the shiny surfaces (even if painted black sometimes) on the inside surface of the adapter. Flocking the adapter usually takes care of these flare issues and is quite easy to do.

Yes. MB4-T fixed that flare thing and so did MC-11 from Sigma. Or custom flocking of other adapters. Anyways, 11mm IRIX did not look so bad when viewing so far available samples. So I highly suspect typical adapter fail in this case.
