These two lenses cover my mostly used range for landscapes.
Currently I'm shooting CV 12/5.6, Loxia 21/2.8 and FE 16-35/4. My weaker range with my current set-up is 28-35mm where I usually step down to f/8. From the MTF, the FE 16-35/2.8 GM will perform better from 24mm until 35mm. (from wide-open)
My first test will be comparing the 16-35/4 (which I have a great copy) against the new GM.
I'm also considering the 12-24/4 because it's so compact and light, however I really like the CV 12 rendering and sunstar drawing. This will be a tough choice and worth a comparison for me. A lens I would never replace is the Loxia 21/2.8 though.
A possible change for me would be:
CV 12, Loxia 21 and 16-35GM
OR
FE 12-24, Loxia 21 and 16-35GM. I gotta test them against each other and decide on pros and cons of the new choices.....

I promised myself to never sell my 16-35/4 copy since it took me a while to find it. If it goes on the buy and sell...grab it!
The trick will be to find a good 16-35 GM!...I didn't have much luck with the 24-70 GM.

Our first copy of the 24-70GM was pretty bad. The second copy which we kept is amazing, sharp edge to edge throughout the whole range, wide open and stopped down. Long end which everyone says is weaker on the GM is just as sharp as wide end. It also has virtually no CA. I use a different 24-70GM at work that does have a bit of CA and isn't quite as sharp.

Agree, I rather use a cheap and good Canon 35 F2 IS on adapter than using a F2.8 prime in this focal length.

I think that we are seeing a 12-24 f/4 G lens here, gives me more hope that we will see a 35 f/1.8 G lens before too long (Hopefully within a year). If it is fairly small and priced at $1,200 or less I would be very happy to see that and think it would sell very well.

Canon's rather sweet 35/2 is modern and well-liked, and sells for just $550. The odds on a Sony lookalike at much greater cost are very low, they already have this rep for expensive lenses. Zeiss, on the other hand, may have something up their sleeve besides their arm.
Batis runs: 18-25-85-135. (All of them are really fine lenses, even though every thing 'wrong' gets the spotlight treatment - don't like the shape, large even if light, I can game its bokeh, it's not f1.x and so on.)
So 25mm <--> 85mm omits a lot of established lens FLs and leaves much to be desired. AF primes of the same standard at around your figure or even $200-300 less are surely in the master plan. It turns out the humble 35mm optic is the final frontier, people just want something not giant/heavy/expensive nor tiny/slow/compromised/still expensive.
It was all too hard for Sony, and there is no Otus 35mm, nor a 35mm from Leica as good as the 50AA. Yet it is very popular and needed by many. Zeiss's ZM range comprises ten lenses, of which 30% are 35mm: f1.4, f2 and f2.8. With an insurgence of Canon folks, this would a great time to release AF 35/50mm lenses with the flared flute, IMO.

Zeiss made a statement earlier that they aren't really eager to make 35mm or 50mm lenses because there are already two Sony/Zeiss lenses at 35mm and 50mm. They would in fact be competing with themselves. In contrast, Sony would be filling out their lens line to more fully compete with Canon and Nikon, something that I think does matter to them. We will see in time, however.

The !2-24 is a great surprise! I was actually thinking of ordering the Canon lens today. Glad I waited. Really looking forward to test results on this lens. A native Sony 12-24 would be really nice as long as it's performance is up to at least the Sigma, if not the Canon.
Based on the dpreview images the Canon is in a whiole different class, as it should be for the price. How it compares to the SIgma will be more interesting, but those dpreview shots where underwhelming as was the A9 AF. Not one single action shot was truly sharp, maybe that was the AF of the lens, and distortion is very high at edges and corners, but then again it's dpreview and I've never seen many good test shots from them for any lens.

A Batis 35/2 would be very popular for Zeiss. It would sell much more than their latest specialized lenses like Loxia 85/2.4 and Batis 135/2.8.
However, as far as native 35mm lenses goes, we already have two great choices. A great copy of the 35/2.8 ZA is excellent even wide open for landscapes and general photography. It's well corrected for aberrations and has nice contrast. The 35/1.4 ZA is a great lens with similar rendering to the RX1R Sonnar. It's a little long but not too heavy at ~600g. Variability is an issue, but I am very happy with my copy.

I am still debating this move. The CV 12 is half the weight and about 1.5" shorter. It also renders beautiful sunstars starting at f/7.1.
It's a stop slower though and I am wondering if the 4 asphericals and exotic glass in the new FE 12-24 will translate to much higher resolution and aberration control in comparison.

Well we can think about this for awhile now
12-24 July 31
16-35 August 31
B&H
I'm just going to put it on the back burner with decision making. Keep building my system. Going to grab a A9 on release with 3 batteries total and vertical grip. Hold onto my A7r II as well . But not sure I'm going to buy lenses at this time. Right now I can certainly get by with a CV12, Batis 18, Sigma 24-35, Sony 35 1.4 ( yes I bought my 5th one ) Sony 85 1.8 and my Sigma 135 1.8. I will switch out the Sigma 24-35 for the new GM 16-35 that's a given. The 12-24 I think I'm better off with my CV 12 and Batis 18 instead. Lock it in. Lol
I'll give you my prediction too. We will not see a Sony 135 for at least another year. Next lenss will be looking ne'er for the A9 marketing machine and Sony will not make a 35 F2 if ever. It's got to come from the Batis line or a native Sigma E lens.
