I sometimes subscribe to the well known west coast guy with a subscription site that some hate..
he's done some interesting comparisons of the Sigma 1.8/135 and the APO Sonnar 2/135. I'm not going to copy his comments since they are copyright, but a few interesting observations by way of conversation should be OK.
Some unsurprising things first: at infinity or long distances the Sigma is as good or better in terms of both apochrmaticness and sharpness and contrast.
It does however have much more focus breathing. He estimates it's a 140mm lens at infinity, and 130 or bit less at MFD.
But the interesting thing about it is the tests at close distance; magnification ranges around 1:5 or so.
At these distances, in some conditions the APO-Sonnar has noticeable better contrast until f5, and in other conditions right until f9 when diffraction hits them both. The Sigma, though, has marginally better LoCA correction at f2 (but worse stopped down a little bit). But his samples seem to indicate that if you want a 135 for close up images (And I've used my APO-SOnnar mainly for wide aperture botanical images) you are noticeable better off with the APO-SOnnar.
Of course for landscape, and portrait, or runway, the Sigma would as good or better.
