p.9 #1 · Tokina Firin 20mm F2 . I took one for the team

I did. It should be perfect for my wind turbines in two weeks in Texas. Here are some thoughts. It's certainly the sharpest in my wide angle group between the CV 12 and the ZM 25. Although the ZM 25 now is killer good with the PCX . Big thing it's the widest I can filter as well . So if I need ND or CPL work it's perfect for it. Also it's pretty much distortion free which is a huge plus because my 25 is not. Also it vignettes the least. So in a sense it's the perfect lens as my 12 and 25 are more funky in look. So I look at it as my my versitile wide. It will also pat well the when I use my AF kit even though its manual focus it's nice to have with the 24-70,85,135 kit as well. The only real downside is sunstars and maybe some flare which I still need to test. But sun stars I can use 12,25,35 which are really good. So I think it fits in really nice. I need to shoot it more too in real world imagery. Besides all that it's fairly cheap to buy at 800 dollars

You have to remember that Guy keeping a lens for 30 days is a pretty long term relationship for him. 😜😜

Thanks for this review. Considering this over the Loxia for astro on my new Sony RII set-up and this was helpful, although I am still debating haha.

Okay I bit the bullet and also bought this lens to go with my Sony A7Rii. First time A7 user,
moving from Canon to lighten the load while backpacking. Will definitely let you know what I think - couldn't really justify the added cost of the Loxia or Batis at this time, and while I enjoy the Rokinon on my A6000, I have had condensation issues and would like something slightly better built for the backcountry (even though I will still take the A6000+Rokinon backpacking). My buddy who works at a camera shop had a chance to use this lens extensively while traveling in Iceland this past month and recommended it to me, so that's what garnered my interest initially. He sent over some 100% crops of the night sky and they were not too bad (he was shooting on an A7ii though).

Like many others, I purchased this predominantly for astrophotography. My other lens for now include a Canon 17-40 f4L and will purchase a 70-200f4L to replace my 2.8is version. I also contemplated a Sigma Art 1.4 or just using my Canon 24-70 2.8, but the weight savings and size were big factors for me.

I, and I'm sure others, would love to see any astro samples, if you get a chance. Thanks.

Definitely will get some samples for you all!

Received the lens and am heading on a trip to Utah this weekend. Overall initial impressions are good as far as the quality and build of the lens are concerned. I've only shot stuff around the house to check the focus so nothing of substance to report there.

Will report back when I have images to share! This will likely be next weekend.

Well, I just got mine but didn't have much time to get any shots in the light. A couple tests I did perform though were trying to determine how much this lens relies on digital corrections.

The tests were simple:
1) Set camera to all manual settings
2) Attach lens to camera, press the lens release and rotate the lens just enough to lose electrical contact.
3) Take picture
4) Fully attach lens.
5) Take picture.

I found that there are indeed noticeable distortion and vignetting corrections that are applied. I'm not sure if this is only to the JPEG or RAW as well.

If nobody else is up to performing this test, I'll upload some pictures when I get a chance to setup the test in better conditions.

So not all Raws are really truly raw? Wow...I actually never actually knew that. I always assumed digital corrections was done solely in post, or if outputting a JPEG.

Im processing a big load of files. This job did not suite itself perfectly for the 20mm but when i used it I am really happy with the results. Its extremely sharp lens. I would even go out on a limb here and say from F2 to maybe F6.3 its sharper than the Loxia 21. Its really sharp. I have some upcoming images that will scare you on how sharp it is. This image the grass is sharp all the way though the image

Did you use that monster truck hood scoop or your usual, a screw-in lens hood?

Hey guys, I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I did promise above I'd share some images from the Tokina lens. Unfortunately, it was a full moon so no Milky Way shots, but I have some full moon night shots from cathedral valley in Capitol reef and from sunrise/sunset I can share if you'd like to see.

Overall, I think the lens is pretty good. Very sharp and easy to use; it's also built very well, too, while still being "light" which was a great concern for someone like me who backpacks a lot.

True story, I'd also been intrigued by this lens. 3-4 weeks ago I thought to myself I'll keep an eye out for Guy's used lens. I tried to resist when he listed it, but Guy twisted my arm. All I can say is Thanks!

Came in yesterday, so I took it out last night, It was a far from ideal night (3/4 moon, very windy) but managed to get a few shots that I like. Plan to do some long exposures next. I think it'll be a keeper (at least for a little while.) Coma isn't perfect but I'm going to like it for Astro. The field of view is to my taste and the aperture is good in a compact body. Otherwise it handles great, infinity is just a hair before the hard stop. Once I get used to working in the dark it'll be a breeze to use.

Full Res JPEGs are in Flickr if anyone wants to look more closely, or could send RAWs, but again it was a very windy night, had to hold the tripod for stability so I wouldn't use these for critical analysis.

More thoughts on the Firin: adaptedlenses.com

It does have complex distortion, but a lens profile should correct it with minimal loss. Hopefully one comes soon. Otherwise still enjoy the lens. It's not a Loxia but it delivers a whole lot regardless.

The Firin 20/2 has a profile at last for Lightroom, I've downloaded the Classic version and had this nice surprise. Seems to correct the distortion and vignetting quite alright.
