continue testing the lens with 1.4 and 1.7 TCs...

with 1.4 TC, AF holds very well. I am comfortable with using it for slow BIF, i.e. WTK but not Peregrine Falcons.

However, with the 1.7 TC, AF for BIF is a hit/miss. Best for static subjects.

It's rare for us in SoCal to have opportunities to photograph the WTK with downward/eye-level view

I still don't understand where Nikon EXIF learned to do math

Even using the true squrt of 2 for the 1.4 that Exif is wrong.

lol I agreed Geoff!

Here is what I noticed, Nikon exif tend to round the number to even "50" for the last two digits, i.e. 840 is usually displayed as 850. 1120 is displayed as 1150. 1360 is displayed as 1350...

right. Sometimes, Lensauthority would have one for about $11.5k. I saw at least two listings during the past 6 months. But they usually only lasted a week or two...

For static subjects, rather than using the TC1.7II, try the TC2.0III using LV for focus.

Many beautiful images in this thread. I am seriously interested in the 800mm but I am concerned that I am buying a lens released 5 years ago at a jaw dropping $16.5K.

What are you concerned about? Should not the IQ of the optics Nikon super telephotos (all versions) are fantastic. Should not be a concern about new type of glass as nothing has been introduced since FL and these incorporate FL. Should not be weight reduction unless one wants to wait for a 100% carbon fiber tube.

My wife explained to me years ago that for somethings Want and Need were the same.

Go for it, I do not know of anyone that has a 800mm that suffers from buyer's remorse.

Hi Roy, I am not concerned at all about image quality of the 800, the pics speak for themselves. This will be the most expensive lens I have ever purchased, the B+H prices hovers between $16.5K and $17K and this won't be a type of photography I make money from.
I suppose my primary concern is that this is a 5 year old lens, I will drop a lot of coin on it and then Nikon will release an E model. That would annoy me lol

Isn't it an E lens anyway. Far beyond my pocket I even wouldn't like the insurance running costs on it.
Also the D850 has "made" shorter lenses longer now.

It is an E, I just meant whatever the next version was. Just a niggle in the back of my mind.

Of course it is anyones guess....but I would say it is highly unlikely this lens will be replaced anytime soon (if ever) given the state of the photographic industry.

You can always buy used if you want to save some money. https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1531997/0?keyword=Nikon,800mm#14374766

And D850 made the 800mm even longer....lol

The way I see it, I ain't getting any younger. Might as well enjoy this lens while I still have the energy to carry it around. Lol

Agreed. No buyer remorse here when it is a perfect copy and performs as expected.😁
