Hi Roy, I am not concerned at all about image quality of the 800, the pics speak for themselves. This will be the most expensive lens I have ever purchased, the B+H prices hovers between $16.5K and $17K and this won't be a type of photography I make money from.
I suppose my primary concern is that this is a 5 year old lens, I will drop a lot of coin on it and then Nikon will release an E model. That would annoy me lol
The previous version of the Nikon 800mm f5.6 was in production for 19 years. How old will you be 14 years from now? How much enjoyment will you have missed? We are not getting any younger.
In early May I will be taking this lens to Yellowstone for 11 days. I will be having a great time. You know you want to join in, right?

Gorgeous images, all of them. I still have my D800E and the AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 G ED VR, but I hardly use it, as I added Sony mirrorless gear that is easier on my aging eyes. As I have never owned one of those 400/2.8, 500/4, 600/4, 5.6, or 800/5.6 lenses, I am looking forward to the Sony FE 400/2.8 lens, announced for release this summer/fall, and wonder how it will perform with a 2x TC on my Sony A9. If that system should perform similar to the Nikon gear used in the images in this thread, I would be mightily impressed. Any thoughts what to expect? TIA.

I have no experiences with Sony setup. Looking at the lenscore link below, the Sony 500mm f/4G SSM scored pretty well on the overall. Resolving power is below others telephotos from canon/Nikon. I would imagine their 400mm 2.8 got to be better though.

Absolutely amazing, Thang! Whereabouts are you shooting?
thanks Bill. I am from SoCal, specifically Orange County. If you're going to be in the area next 4 weeks, hook up with me. The WTK chicks and Falcons babies are going to fledge during this time.
