Yes, but you need to be careful with atmospheric disturbances (e.g., heat shimmer, and even in winter).

Yes, I know what you mean with atmospheric disturbance! I don't have a 800mm but I do use my 600mm with my 1.4 and 1.7tc.

The lens is costly at 16,300. Then you lose the hood and pay 1000 dollars to replace it.
1 grand for the hood? Outrageous!

It is the same hood as is on the 400mm E. So for an expenditure of $27,000 or so you get a spare.
